Cutting-edge technology, a caring attitude, and a firm commitment to patient education proved an unbeatable combination for the team at Lifelong Smiles. In a ceremony on September 25, Discus Dental and RDH presented this practice with the RDH PEARL Award. The PEARL Award honors prevention, education, accessibility, responsibility, and loyalty in dental hygiene.
Mathew Parrish and Tricia Perri (far left), of Discus Dental, and Craig Dickson, publisher, RDH, (far right) present the PEARL Award to Lynn Pierson and Dr. John Sieweke of Lifelong Smiles family dentistry.
"We're so honored and thrilled to be selected from all the practices throughout the country," says Dr. John Sieweke, who established Lifelong Smiles in 1983 in the Atlanta suburb of Covington, Ga. "The credit goes entirely to Lynn for taking it upon herself to submit our practice for this honor."
"Lynn" is Lynn Pierson, one of two hygienists on staff at Lifelong Smiles. In practice for 14 years, Pierson has been a member of Dr. Sieweke's staff since 1997. "We have an exceptional team here that chooses to work together for common growth and success," says Pierson. "I can't say enough about how important this is in creating a successful practice." Hygienist Wendy Cloudt, chairside assistants Harriet Hanson and Shelly Wilbanks, and front-desk personnel Janie Culbertson and Hallie Mitchell complete Dr. Sieweke's dedicated team.

    Devil's Darning Needle
    Linda Holeman
Linda Holeman's characters are instantly familiar. Or are they? In the nine stories which comprise Devil's Darning Needle , we meet people seemingly ordinary struggling to go forward. Meet Willow, who holds a mysterious and suffocating spell over a woman who innocently befriends her; the powerful Birdie, who, despite her lowly position, becomes a saviour; Seamus, carrying all his anguish and faith in a simple cookie tin. These are but a few of Holeman's memorable characters, all guarding the secrets of their hearts. With their finely tuned moments of memory and truth, their pivotal flashes of clarity, these characters will continue to haunt the reader long after the book has been set down. "Linda Holeman's stories deserve to be in everyone's library. They are gems, full of subtle feeling that shifts from one mood to another as easily and as quietly as water takes its shape in fields and rocky places." The Bookseller
Praise for Holeman's previous short story collection: Flying to Yellow is a gem: the stories are distinct, sparkling, and illuminating. The difficulties and challenges the characters face are not particularly strange or rare...but these stories are nevertheless profound in many ways."

LINDA HOLEMAN Linda honed her instincts for writing growing up in Manitoba, in a family that told a lot of stories, usually after supper around the table. Sharing with them her observations of events at school or in the neighbourhood, or extravagantly describing the way she wished the day had gone - she learned to capture the essence of what makes people laugh, cry, even feel shocked. Always a writer, if at first in secret, her dream of formal writing moved subtly aside for a time while she travelled the world, went to university, got married, taught for ten years, and had three children. After obtaining degrees from the University of Winnipeg and University of Manitoba, and her decade of teaching, Linda moved into the literary world as a reviewer for Canadian Materials while working first on short stories, and soon novels. There is a search for identity in many of the books Linda has written. In addition to her own writing, Linda is an active mentor in Canada's writing community. She has given presentations to many writers' guilds, roundtables and associations including the Canadian Publishers Association, The California Reading Association, Canadian Images, CANSCAIP, and The Montreal Young Authors Conference. She has created and facilitated many writing workshops nationally to both students and adults.
