  • Mercy's Birds
    by Linda Holeman

Reading "Mercy's Birds" was a bit like traveling through my own memories, at times. When I was fifteen-going-on-sixteen, I too dressed in black, worked after school to make money for groceries and bills, and didn't concern myself with the issue of high school popularity. Linda Holeman has given Mercy, the main character of the book, a narrative voice that is intelligent and insightful, warm and feeling, that would cause many adult readers to recall the challenges they faced as teens and the feeling of overcoming them.
Mercy is a teen who lives with her mother and aunt, two women who through the course of the book learn more from Mercy than they themselves teach the teen. Mercy's mother, Pearl, is present but distant, lost in a dangerous haze of abandoned dreams and disappointment. She has forgotten her potential, her talents, her love, and her reason for living. Mercy's aunt, named Moo (which is short for Maureen), sometimes seems to be her sister's opposite: she is outgoing and talkative, often trying too hard to compensate for her obvious failures in life.
Mercy makes bold efforts at keeping her small family of women afloat, feeling frustrated at having to do so, but compassionate for the reasons why. She continues to work hard in school as well, makes some friends, and humors her mother and aunt and their quirky needs.

REMEMBER ME Irene N. Watts A NOSE FOR ADVENTURE Richard Scrimger Young Marianne is one of the lucky ones. She has escaped on the first Kindertransport organized to take Jewish children out of Nazi Germany to safety in Britain. At first Marianne is desperate. She does not speak English, she is not welcome in her sponsors' home, and, most of all, she misses her family terribly. How will she find the strength to survive, alone in a strange land? The Kindertransporte and the effort to provide homes for refugee children in Britain are based on factual events that took place just as World War II was breaking out. Alan is off to New York, where his father will meet him for some "quality" time together. There are some snags, though. First, his father isn't at the airport. Then there's his cranky seatmate, Frieda, who is almost kidnapped. Sally, an abandoned mutt, joins the scene, and finally, Norbert is back. He is an alien from Jupiter who had previously taken up residence in Alan's nose, while on a fact-finding mission to Earth. Alan had been, to say at least, an unwilling host to Norbert, but when you're lost in New York City being chased by bad guys, you need all the help you can get! MERCY'S BIRDS Linda Holeman
CLEVER-LAZY Joan Bodger Mercy's life is spinning out of control. Her mother seems to be shrinking as she retreats more and more to the security of her bedroom. Her aunt is growing larger as she retreats into tarot cards and alcohol. While Mercy tries to keep up at school and with her job, she lives in fear of the day that Barry, her aunt´s boyfriend, comes back lo live whith them all. Will help for the family come from an unexpected source? And will it be accepted?
