The Healer
Greg Hollingshead HarperCollins Though not many modern novels deal with spirituality, it is a rare few that try to do so from a realistic perspective. In the new novel, "The Healer," Greg Hollingshead incorporates the themes of nature and spirituality in a realistic way. He focuses on the personal experiences of the healer and takes into account the social implications surrounding the profession. Yet, he does so not in a mystic, but in a pragmatic way with a lyrical style. In essence, the book is about Caroline Troyer, a young woman with supernatural abilities to heal people. Tim Wakelin, a journalist and recent widower, goes to the small town where Caroline lives in search of a story and Caroline ends up changing his life. The ability Caroline has is well known by the people in the town and by her parents. Caroline's childhood is shaped by her inability to trust her mother and her faith in her father. But her father abuses her and betrays her in a way that completely destroys her. The theme of abuse is another important aspect of the book. Hollingshead wanted to write about abuse in a way that did not seem like the culminating aspect was the scene of when the abuse happened. He feels that child abuse is a common theme in books and the anticipation of the abuse is not what he wanted to write about. Instead he wanted to convince the reader that the abuse broke down Caroline but also "laid the ground for the spiritual." Hollingshead said, "(Caroline) knows exactly what happened but that doesn't prevent her from being destroyed." Later in the novel, her father continues to be an "evil force" but Hollingshead says that he doesn't even understand what he has done to his daughter.

A Roaring Success
The Roaring Girl catapults Greg Hollingshead to literary stardom
By Charlene Rooke "It's a great title." "Everyone loved the title. I had a different title, quite a horrible title..." Greg Hollingshead's voice trails off. He's talking about his short story collection The Roaring Girl , and he seems as confounded by the book's critical and popular success as he is by the vivacious allure of its name. If a flurry of attention has deposited him a little disconcerted, hair a little ruffled in his campus office one day almost six months after winning Canada's most prestigious literary prize, you can understand why. The 1995 Governor General's Award for fiction; an impossible number of requests for readings, book signings and interviews, even for movie rights have burst into the quietly ordered life of a university professor still dedicated to writing in his home office for a few hours each morning. In the normal scheme of things, he then cycles from his nearby Windsor Park home to campus, where he teaches 18th-century literature and creative writing in the Department of English. Ironically, the current darling of the Canadian literary scene used to teach CanLit, but stopped about 10 years ago. "I was just so critical," he recalls. One of his creative writing classes threw a congratulatory party for the award-winning author when he returned to campus after accepting his prize in Toronto last November. "My graduate students were very focused on what the award meant, very pleased," explains Hollingshead. "The undergraduate students ... are not quite so sure what it's about. They're cooler, more diffident."

CHILDHOOD
Set in a Southern Ontario town close to the U.S. border in the 1950's and '60's, and in Ottawa in the years that follow, Childhood is narrated by Thomas MacMillan. Through his clear-eyed vision and his unsentimental ordering of events, we meet the novel's cast of characters. Among them are: Edna MacMillan, Thomas's volatile, unpredictable Trinidadian grandmother; and Katarina, the mother who left him at birth and then ten years later, in the company of the sinister Mr. Mataf, swoops him up and takes him from Petrolia. Soon after, we meet Henry Wing, a Black man with Chinese blood, a gentle conjurer who lives in faded Victorian splendour, and whose life's work as a self-styled scientist is collecting esoteric facts of the natural world.
Despair and Other Stories of Ottawa was published in 1994 and shortlisted for the Commonwealth Prize, Canada and Caribbean region. His short stories have appeared in literary journals and in anthologies. He has written for radio and for the theatre, has been playwright-in-residence at the Canadian Stage Company, and is a contribution editor for

For those wanting to get a bit more up close and personal with their favourite home-grown authors, York University is presenting its fourth annual "Canadian Writers in Person" reading series, September 2002 - April 2003. Twelve of Canada's leading novelists and poets, including: Greg Hollingshead, Rosemary Sullivan, George Elliott Clarke, Richard B. Wright, Susan Goyette and Alistair MacLeod, will read from their work and will take questions from the audience. "The series showcases some of Canada's best literary talent," said Atkinson English Professor John Unrau. "Hearing these authors read from their work adds a dimension to the literary experience that is unavailable from the printed word alone." The series is sponsored by the Master's Office and English Department of the Atkinson Faculty of Liberal and Professional Studies, the Atkinson students' and alumni associations, with the support of the Canada Council, and a dozen other benefactors. The following free public readings will be held Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. in Stedman Lecture Hall "D" at York University, 4700 Keele Street:
