B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Juho Aukusti Hollo (1885 - 1967) Educator, translator, Ph.D., professor at the University of Helsinki from 1930 to 1954. As a translator Hollo was one of the most prolific in Finland - he was able to translate into Finnish from almost any language and from any genre of literature. As an essayist Hollo's style was lively, he moved easily from one subject to another. Hollo combined down-to-earth examples with deep psychological and philosphical insights, and found intuitively a practical approach to complex questions. (from the magazine Suomalainen Suomi, 1951)

Poems by Anselm Hollo "Ironic, in-jokey, post-beat hipster, and quietly beautiful lyricist, avant-gardist Hollo graciously draws readers to his work . . . never trite or off-balance, these are poems that sustain." - Publisher’s Weekly, starred review "Don’t miss anything at all by this strong poet." - Library Journal "Hollo loves the highspeed turn, the magic of the unexpected, the dazzle of ideas." - The Los Angeles Times "For three decades Anselm Hollo has been an important figure on the intercultural poetry scene." - James Laughlin "The bedrock solidness of Anselm Hollo’s poems makes as ever a place of refuge and delight in these meager times. Thank God for his humor, else we’d all be dead." - Robert Creeley "I await Anselm’s new poems with more eagerness than those of any other living poet. His work is ‘news that stays news,’ a poetic gazette that is one of our times most accurate neural readouts. If you can’t remember your way to your heart, Anselm’s poems will show you." - Andrei Codrescu

Poems by Anselm Hollo "Hollo is an epic poet. . . . Against explosions of carnage and fear, there is a persistence that is as close to heroic as I can imagine. It continues! Improvisational humor, smarter ‘n paint, counterpoints a profoundly mortal pulse. Equity. Compassion. Tenderness. He writes . . . out of hipness that knows staying alive was always a matter of exploiting the unexpected." - St Mark’s Poetry Project Newsletter ". . . it is in the short lyric where Hollo excels. With a sense of line derived from Williams and Creeley and a sense of humor straight from the New York school, he captures the possibilities of transient moments, becoming both commentator and object of comment." - John Stickney, Small Press "Anselm Hollo’s so sly and subtle he almost melts in your mind." - Richard Silberg, Poetry Flash

Professor Martens' Departure
Jaan Kross
[translated from the Estonian by Anselm Hollo]
Harvill 1995 A book review by Danny Yee It is 1909, and Professor Friedrich Fromhold Martens is catching the train from his home town of Pärnu to St Petersburg. As he travels his mind wanders back over his life: over his rise from poor provincial student to Privy Councillor; over his career as an expert on international law, a drafter of treaties, author of learned tomes, and near recipient of the Nobel peace prize; over his marriage and his love affairs; and over his half-conviction that he is a reincarnation of German lawyer and diplomat Georg Friedrich von Martens. These meanders are revealing of both his failings and his qualities: even as he confesses his infidelities, he reveals the depth of his love for his wife; even as he justifies to himself his hypocrisies in the service of the state, his basic honesty and sense of justice are made apparent. The result is a complex, many-layered, and moving portrait of a man at the end of his life, a portrait almost elegiac in its effect. With its formal elegance, skillful handling of stream of consciousness, and general narrative verve

The Czar's Madman
Jaan Kross
[translated from the Estonian by Anselm Hollo]
Harvill 1992 A book review by Danny Yee Estonian nobleman Timotheus von Bock, friend and confidant of Tsar Alexander I, was an idealist. Not only did he marry one of his peasants, but in 1818 he wrote a memorandum to the Tsar saying exactly what he thought of him. Incarcerated in prison as a result, he was freed in 1827 on grounds of insanity but remained under surveillance. Such is the historical background to Kross' novel The Czar's Madman , which purports to be a journal kept by Jakob, the brother of Timo's wife. (An afterword explains how much of the novel is factual.) While Jakob is a rather dispassionate observer and the reader never really identifies with any of its characters, The Czar's Madman still compels. It has elements of a detective story, as Jakob gradually uncovers the truth behind Timo's arrest and the details of his imprisonment (and later the truth about his death). At the same time he must cope with the vagaries of life under an absolute monarchy, hiding his journal, trying to arrange a flight into exile, and all the time wondering whether Timo really is mad. There is also interest in his own love affairs and in the finely wrought portrait of Estonian society in the early nineteenth century. Kross is another novelist I had never previously heard of, for whom I will henceforth keep a close watch. Apparently he has written a number of historical novels, though I foresee some trouble finding English translations of them.

To have them tell you... A many-crested roof,
To cut the wind and the birds as they pass.
North
go the snow, the birds and the grass
(not much industry, there).
An aerial
arabesque or ear, Strung in the wind. Greetings, Goodbye. Tree tree tree and tree This is the song: No time, no time to see the green before it bursts open. Again it was spring, the bird tried to sing, but its voice was confusion, confusion: Helpless, Grass. And there was a house, And in it, a man, a woman, a child and an old woman. Nine holes in the soul. A chimney-cap, spinning. Three colours: Green, black and grey. The melting snow, the forest, the rushes, the river and the boats. Fir, and pine, and birch, Alder and willow, the willow a bush, And the hazel: Here it grows up to the height of a tree. Again it was spring. Long weeks the woman breathes into it, then it cries out: I am born! I am a girl! And I'll go out by myself and play in front of the house. Wooden birds: their beaks point at the sky.

Joanne Kyger also reads on March 10 , 7:30, with Don Guravich at Sweetie's, San Francisco, and on April 2 , 7:30, at University of San Francisco's Lone Mountain campus. Anselm Hollo will also read on April 26 in Tucson, Arizona, for POG at Dinnerware Gallery. These are two of the most majestic of America's outrider poets, in accomplishment, in reputation, in the wit, spark, daring of their work. Joanne Kyger has been a key figure in American poetry-Beat, Buddhist, quirky, and, above all, authentic-fashioning a writing that subverts, obviates, the 'literary' for four decades now. As Bill Berkson says of her, "If existence is just what happens, can poetry rise to the occasion? Joanne Kyger's poetry is of existence as it happens, moving within earshot, and close-up, under her sharply critical, wildly affectionate glance." Among her twenty or so published books are such titles as The Tapestry and the Web , prose, as in
