    • "The poems of Vanishing Lung Syndrome are a breathtaking exemplification of Holub's ability to unite seemingly disparate fields of endeavour." -
    • "Continually searching for fresh perspectives, Holub's vision is marked with unflagging invention and resistance, along with a generous tolerance for doubt. The words he's breeding out in his inky petri dish may be novelties of discovery or empty delusions." - Bill Marx

    Holub, Miroslav Heart Transplant
Genre Poem Keywords Heart Disease Medical Advances Surgery Technology Summary In typically terse poetic structure, utilizing fresh new images, Holub visualizes removal and replacement of a human heart during a transplant procedure. He describes the throb of the extracorporeal circulation mechanics as an "inaudible New World Symphony" as he elevates the imagery of the hole in the chest where once resided the "king of Blood" transiently into the cosmos. With the arrival of the "new heart," the imagery again becomes earth bound: the structure is sewn in place, the beats resume and the "curves jump like / synthetic sheep" as the EKG rhythm resumes. Commentary In this poem, Holub stays much closer to a description of an actual event than he does in his more dramatically metaphorical pieces. The differences are twofold: the absolute technical wonderment of the achievement is so understated as to be most effective; and the images used, though refreshing, are crystal clear. For example, watch the QRS complex on an EKG screen and you will see sheep jumping in lines and in perfect rhythmas an emblem of the victory of both "life and spirit."

    Holub, Miroslav In the Microscope
Genre Poem Keywords Medical Advances Nature Science Summary In this short poem (11 lines) the writer sees a whole world in the microscope: among the cells, a world of dreams and suffering, of courage and death. Commentary Holub is one of the fine Czech poets of the 20th century and also a practicing scientist and clinical pathologist. His poems are generally spare, free-form, and anti-literary. He considered William Carlos Williams a major influence on this work, but while Williams strove for simplicity in his shorter poems, Holub often probes several layers of meaning. Like Williams, though, Holub's poems frequently deal with the grim realities of life and are written with scientific exactitude. Miroslav Holub has been called by Ted Hughes one of the half dozen most important poets writing anywhere. Holub's work has been widely translated, and for many years due to political reasons his work was only available abroad. Holub has written 16 books of poetry, six collections of prose and three monographs - the latest, Immunology of Nude Mice , published in 1989. Collections which have appeared in English translation include The Dimension of the Present Moment, Although, On the Contrary, Notes of a Clay Pigeon, Supposed To Fly, Vanishing Lung Syndrome , and Poems Before and After
Miroslav Holub, is a figure, whose sharp wisdom we cannot afford to disregard in the middle of our own historical upheavals: he is a poet who can see the emergence of a mushroom from the forest floor as an event "as if history / were being uprooted", yet lived through the most violent political upheavals of his home country, Czechia. He described the consequences of the Communist coup in 1948 on the peotry of his generation as: "We entered literature by shutting up. By complete silence." Holub has described the experience of Stalinism as a "a perfect situation of inner and outer absurdity", reminding him of nothing more than "Kafka trials", "Ionesco's rhinoceroses", "and in private something went on that was later defined as waiting for Godot." and "The Czech experience was an epitome of the age-old struggle of intellect with codified stupidity".

    MIROSLAV HOLUB

    (translated by David Young
The ten-page title poem, Miroslav Holub's longest, is among the major long poems of the second half-century. The theater pieces and the puppet sequence, filtering social and psychological issues through the lens of playhouse and fairytale, are brilliant literary experiments. This collection, appearing here for the first time in any language, marked a milestone in the development of one of the great East European masters. cloth $10.95 excerpt ordering information
    SUNDAY
The marathon runners approach the turning point:
Sunday, that day of sad songs
    near the railway bridge
    and clouds.
    Your eyes, at zenith
and to say this without using the body
is to run without touching the ground. Thirty years ago
a transport train went by, open cars loaded with silhouettes, heads and shoulders cut from the black paper of horror, these people loved someone, but the train comes back empty every Sunday, only a few hairpins and some bits of charcoal on the floors of the cars...
