    The Homeric Problem
The 'Homeric Problem' is the question whether Homer, the author of the Iliad and the Odyssey truly existed. The question also asks if Homer wasn't a single man, who wrote the epics.

What I-355 Means for Homer Glen
Subscribe to the Stop I-355 email list For decades, the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority has promised Will County residents a "quick fix" for its transportation needs - a new 6-lane tollway through the heart of the county. The reality is that the State does not have the funds to build I-355 If built, I-355 will make problems worse by increasing traffic congestion on local roads and increasing commuting times to work. In addition, thousands of acres of open space around Homer Glen will be destroyed and replaced by high-density development. Fortunately, there are alternatives that will meet Homer Glen's transportation needs and preserve the environment.
IMPACTS OF THE I-355 TOLLWAY ON HOMER GLEN
    • More Traffic on Local Roads
I-355 is likely to make traffic worse by clogging roads such with traffic moving to and from the tollway. The Illinois Department of Transportation projects the average daily traffic on 143rd Street to increase from 4,200 to 25,000 if I-355 is built.
      Loss of Open Space
    • If I-355 is build there will be tremendous pressure to construct vast commercial developments around tollway interchanges.

Her catalogue is a landmark in Homer studies. It puts Homer in his true relationship to illustration, to other American art and to the European and English examples he followed, from Ruskin to Millet ; its vivacity of argument matches that of the paintings. Cooper has brought together some two hundred watercolors-almost a third of Homer's known output. It is a wholly delectable show, and it makes clear why watercolor, in its special freshness and immediacy, gave Homer access to moments of vision he did not have in the weightier, slower diction of oils. "You will see, in the future I will live by my watercolors," Homer once remarked, and he was almost right. He came to the medium late: he was thirty-seven and a mature artist. A distinct air of the Salon, of the desire for a "major" utterance that leads to an overworked surface, clings to some of the early watercolors-in particular, the paintings of

B ecause the facts of Homer's life when he was born or died, where he lived, who he was remain unknown and shall most likely never be known, many scholars have doubted the existence of a "Homer" and point to his texts as the work of a collection of authors over a long period of time. This criticism stems from a disbelief that epics such as The Iliad and The Odyssey could have been formulated, maintained, and transmitted within an oral culture. However, new research on human memory and careful analysis of text reveals evidence that the textual style of each poem does emanate from one author. N o matter who wrote The Iliad and The Odyssey , we can assume that the texts which survive today are not as they were originally composed. Aside from actual textual emendations, the language changed over time, including the introduction of Attic forms and the replacement of archaic terms and usages, all done slowly over time. W hile popular throughout the classical period, The Iliad and The Odyssey lost their popularity during the medieval period until Petrarch received a Homerian manuscript in 1354. Petrarch was probably the first to conceive the idea of a complete translation of Homer into Latin; and it was on his initiative and at his expense that Leontius Pilatus, who was for that purpose installed in Boccaccio's house in Florence, rendered both The Iliad and The Odyssey into Latin prose. Crude and imperfect as these translations were, they acquainted the Italian humanists for the first time with the world of Homer; and they greatly influenced all later translations for more than a hundred years to come. Complete English translations did not appear until the very end of the sixteenth century.

A letter to his brother Charles
    Driftwood, 1909
Once created, the wave or the arc of a wave begins its journey through the sea. Countless vibrations precede it, countless vibrations follow after. It approaches the continent, swings into the coast line, courses ashore, breaks, dissolves, is gone. The innermost water it last inhabited flow back in marbly foam to become a body to another beat, and to be again flung down. So it goes night and day , and will go till the secret heart of earth strikes out its last slow beat and the last wave dissolves upon the last forsaken shore.
