LINE OF INQUIRY PROPOSAL 3 Lucas Houck Dec. 1, 2000 Kidd Tutorial Patrick Oh The Violence of Poetry
I plan to explore the relationship between the violence and self-destruction in the life of the poet, and the resulting nature of his or her poetry. I will pursue this duality, this polar bond between creation and destruction as pertaining to poetry and violence. By connecting personal experience to these dialectics, these themes and ideas of violence and self-destruction, I hope to develop a starting point from which, through my poetry, I will begin to dissect my past, and examine the ways in which I view my inner self and the outside world. Violence and self-destruction have long been a part of human life. In a non-utopian reality, they will most likely continue to survive in our world. That these issues may be more or less severe or consequential today than in the past is irrelevant; that they still exist is relevant, and begs the consideration of art. In her preface to Scars: American Poetry in the Face of Violence , Cynthia Edelberg writes, "Poetry’s chief value in the face of violence is, at the very least, to stand as a testament to what has actually happened…"

Elisabeth Sherwin gizmo@ dcn.davis.ca.us Garrett Hongo was born in the back room of a general store built by his grandfather in Volcano, Hawaii. His family left Volcano when he was less than a year old and Hongo grew up in South-Central Los Angeles. He attended what he described as ``fancy schools'': Pomona College, University of Michigan and UC Irvine. The Japanese-American poet has published two collections of poetry, ``Yellow Light'' and ``The River of Heaven,'' which was nominated for the 1988 Pulitzer Prize. He now lives in Eugene, Ore., and teaches English at the University of Oregon. Until last year, he was the director of the creative writing program there. His task, he told a group of students and faculty at UC Davis last week, has been to make sense of the bare facts of his biography. ``The only way to cope was to write of my highly marginalized facts and events and create a land out of language,'' he said. The result is Hongo's memoir, ``Volcano,'' which is being published by Knopf this spring. It will be in local bookstores in a few weeks.

"Eruption: Pu'u O'o" from The River of Heaven We woke near midnight,
flicking on the coat closet's bulb,
the rainforest chilled with mist,
a yellow swirl of gas
in the spill of light outside.
Stars paling, tucked high
in the sky's blue jade, we saw, through the back windows and tops of ohia trees, silhouettes and red showers as if from Blake's fires, magenta and billows of black volleying. Then, a burbling underground, like rice steaming in the pot, shook through chandeliers of fern and the A-frame's tambourine floor, stirring the cats and chickens from the crawl-space and their furled sleep. The fountain rose 900 feet that night, without us near it, smoking white, spitting from the cone 6 miles away, a geyser of flame, pyramids and gyres of ash. Novices, we dressed and drove out, first to the crater rim, Uwekahuna

from Garrett Hongo . . .
One of my favorite books is Volcano: A Memoir of Hawai'i , by Garrett Hongo. The language he uses is beautiful, and I admire him greatly.
There was an outdoor shower Cynthia and I loved to use . . . Though the nights were misty and chilly, it wasn't a problem to shower under the stars either. Our bodies steamed, pale suns with white prominences furling off our skin and into the black milk dark of the forest. One of us would be showering, and the other would walk out of the house and then down along the planked walkway around the sauna. We used the flashlights, orbs of yellow light probing the way. When it threw the bather into the relief of the other's sight, it was a marvel that made us laugh and could reconcile any difference of the day. Otoko ," Wakako said. "Men who needed."
Once, she sang me a song about the soul's need for beauty, a dance of the heart, a dream in the darkest hour of night . . .

Garrett Kaoru Hongo is a prolific and accomplished Asian American poet. His poetry is characterized by striking images and unexpected, luminous lines. He has a special talent for close observation, an eye for the telling detail, and an ability to make the mundane beautiful, as in the vivid food images of “Who Among You Knows the Essence of Garlic?” In dramatic monologues, such as “The Unreal Dwelling: My Years in Volcano,” he gives voice to figures from his familial past or from a communal past. Of his writing, Hongo has written, “My project as a poet has been motivated by a search for origins of various kinds—quests for ethnic and familial roots, cultural identities, and poetic inspiration....I find the landscapes, folkways, and societies of Japan, Hawaii, and even Southern California to continually charm and compel me to write about them and inform myself of their specificities.”
Born in Volcano, Hawaii, Hongo moved as a child to Laie, to Kahuku, and then to California—the San Fernando Valley—where he and his brother were the only Japanese in the public school. His family finally settled in Gardena, a Japanese American community in South Los Angeles adjoining the black community of Watts and the white community of Torrance. Hongo graduated from Pomona College, then traveled in Japan on a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship. He returned for graduate work at the University of Michigan, where he won the Hopwood poetry prize and studied with poet-professors Bert Meyers, Donald Hall, and Philip Levine. Later, he earned an M.F.A. from the University of California at Irvine. He taught at various universities, including the University of Missouri, where he was poetry editor of the
