Volcano A memoir by Garrett Hongo Reviewed by Chris Vandercook
Hawaii is a world apart, not quite another country but far more than just another American state. The little town of Volcano , 4,000 feet above sea level on the Big Island, between Kilauea and Mauna Loa, is one of the Hawaiian islands' hidden treasures, a place of cool air, dense green forests, and night skies lit up by the glow from Kilauea's lava flows. It's also the birthplace of poet Garrett Hongo, whose return to his origins is the springboard for Volcano, a work of lyrical prose by a master of language, and a wonderful introduction to the subtlety and complexity of life in Hawaii. Volcano is a big chunk of the sublime I'd been born tothe craters and ancient firepit and huge black seas of hardened lava, the rain forest lush with all varieties of ferns, orchids, exotic gingers, and wild lilies, the constant rain and sunshowers all dazzled me, exalted me." Hongo walks through the lava fields and rain forest around Volcano with a determination to bring this "exotic and slightly miraculous place" to life on the page. His success is due to his extraordinary gift for language and the extreme precision of his observation. His work is a reminder that poets are the most accurate reporters of all.

Nature Writing: An Exploration of a Genre
Nature Writing: An Exploration of a Genre, McHenry and Science Libraries took place from September 18-December 18, 1995 at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Nature writing synthesizes scientific information and artistic/literary expression, producing some of the most evocative and essential writing of the late twentieth century. But what is nature writing? Does it include fiction and poetry? What are the historical and cultural roots of this genre, and whose voices have been included or excluded? This exhibit featured writing by Barry Lopez, Terry Tempest Williams, Gary Nabhan, Rachel Carson, Gretel Ehrlich, John McPhee, Linda Hogan, Leslie Marmon Silko, Garrett Hongo, and other writers of natural history literature. Bibliography Note: Because Nature Writing crosses science and the humanities, and transcends the boundaries of traditional disciplines it can be difficult for the library researcher to locate. The anthologies listed in this bibliography are a good place to begin to delve into the primary writers in the genre. Audubon magazine (UCSC Sci Lib QL671.A82) also publishes a variety of nature writing. Diane Ackerman

Under the Oaks at Holmes Hall, Overtaken by Rain Poem by Garrett Hongo
Brushwork by Marilyn Reaves A desert downpour in early spring,
and I'm standing under California oaks
gazing through rain as the grey sky thunders.
I don't know why the nightingale sings
to Kubla Khan and not to me, nineteen
and marked by nothing, not even ceremony
or the slash of wind tearing through trees. . . .
Award-winning poet Garrett Kaoru Hongo is the author of two books of verse, Yellow Light and The River of Heaven , which explore the experiences of Asian-Americans in Anglo society. He has also published a work of prose, Volcano: A Memoir of Hawaii. Hongo's style has invited comparison to Walt Whitman, and his language has been descibed as both elegantly lyrical and unself-consciously earthy. Garrett Hongo is Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Oregon. Marilyn Reaves , a lettering artist and designer, teaches in the Department of Art at the University of Oregon.

Book Description
Garrett Hongo grew up with a profound sense of estrangement from his past: "Family secrets, evasions, and my own ignorance fed an anger and a desire to know that would not abate." Born in Hawai'i, raised in Los Angeles after the age of six, a fourth generation Japanese American, inheritor of a recent past more comfortably forgotten than kept alive for Hongo, the "knowing" he so desired would come only when he returned to Volcano, the tiny town where he was born. This beautifully rendered memoir is an account of that journey, finally undertaken when he was in his early thirties: a journey toward the knowledge, about himself and his history, that would give him, at last, "a way to belong and a place to belong to." Arriving in Volcano with his wife and infant son, Hongo settled in a cottage in the rain forest, amidst the "relentlessly spectacular landscape" below the summit of the Kilauea volcano. There, near the general store once owned by his grandfather, among people who quickly recognized the family resemblance in his face, he began to forge a connection to the human culture that, though he was pulled from it at an early age, helped to shape him, and to the living earth that helped to shape that culture. In this way, Hongo both native son and prodigal son found his own path into a world where "nothing was without its meaning or its memories."

Merlin
And once out walking at night
I stumbled across the speckled body
of a small hawk
the hasp of its wing closed.
One note, one note.
It sings in the rills between words,
between hopes.
It sleeps between leaves in a book,
gathers like dust on the piano.
I heard it once on a green hill in Aberdeen in short puffs of wind stirring the new grass among stones. Prayer could not alter it nor clods breaking upon bronze. Henry Carlile "Merlin" from Rain Autumn Leaves The dead piled up, thick, fragrant, on the fire escape. My mother ordered me again, and again, to sweep it clean. All that blooms must fall. I learned this not from the Tao, but from high school biology. Oh, the contradictions of having a broom and not a dustpan! I swept the leaves down, down through the iron grille and let the dead rain over the Wong family's patio. And it was Achilles Wong who completed the task. We called her: The-one-who-cleared-away-another-family's-autumn. She blossomed, tall, benevolent, notwithstanding. Marilyn Chin (b. 1955)
