The Association for the Study of Literature and the Environment has made Web space available for Ms. Bellanca's paper which was presented at a Modern Languages Association session. She argues that his journal is more than just an explication of his poetry. Specifically it fits in the larger tradition of 19th-century British nature writing.

    http://www.stanford.edu/group/ivgrad/poems/hopkinsbio.html
    Gerard Manley Hopkins 1844-1889
Gerard Hopkins was the eldest of nine children in a High Anglican family. He won a scholarship to Balliol College, Oxford in 1863 receiving a first in both Classics and Greats. He thought about becoming a painter-poet like D. G. Rossetti, being strongly influenced by the aesthetic theories of Pater and John Ruskin and the poems of George Herbert and Christina Rossetti. However during his undergraduate years at Oxford he was deeply involved in an exploration of Catholicism, guided by John Henry Newman who had converted in 1845, and was received into the Catholic Church in 1866. Hopkins became a Jesuit (to the consternation of his parents) in 1868 and, feeling that poetry was an indulgence a priest ought not to allow himself, he burned the poems he had written up to that point. It was not until four years later, after studying the writings of Duns Scotus a medieval thinker, that he began writing again. A period of time spent in Wales in 1874 studying theology allowed him to learn Welsh which later became an important influence on his poems. The "sprung rhythm" that he invented was adapted from the rhythms of Welsh poetry. Many of his poetic inventions were considered too radical to be printed and with a few exceptions his poems were not published in his lifetime. Serving variously as a preacher, parish priest, and professor of Greek and Latin, Hopkins always considered poetry as coming second to his other duties. Consequently his output is small, especially in comparison to his contemporaries Tennyson and Browning.

    Hopkins, Gerard Manley Felix Randal
On-Line Text Genre Sonnet Keywords Death and Dying Dementia Human Worth Prayer as Medicine ... Spirituality Summary In this sonnet Hopkins reflects on the long illness and death of Felix Randal, the farrier. The poet watched this "big-boned and hardy-handsome" man decline, until he was broken by "some / fatal four disorders" and his "reason rambled . . . . " At first Randal had railed against his fate, but later, anointed by the poet-priest, he developed a "heavenlier heart" and "sweet reprieve." The poet reflects on his role as a spiritual healer: "This seeing the sick endears them to us, us too it endears." While the priestly tongue and touch refreshed Felix Randal in his illness, Randal's tears also touched the priest's heart, and so he is left with a sense of loss and mourning when the man dies. Commentary The most important line (9) of this sonnet is: "This seeing the sick endears them to us, us too it endears." While the poet is actually a priest referring to spiritual healing, his sentiment expresses a central truth of any healing relationship. Caring for the ill (in the sense of doing things for them) leads to care for the ill (in the sense of connection and compassion); perhaps this is a re-statement of Aristotle's theory of virtue in which one becomes a virtuous person by performing good acts.
