25. Horace. Works
The lyric poet Horace (65-8 B.C.) was extremely popular during the Middle Ages and Renaissance and represented a potential best seller for a printer. The edition on display is Aldus's second edition, and the press subsequently issued twelve more, in addition to four separate editions of Horace's Ars poetica. Although Aldus claims that this edition has been greatly expanded and corrected, the text is almost an exact reprint of the 1501 edition. In his preface Aldus relates a wild tale of how, when he was traveling in northern Italy in 1506 searching for manuscripts, he and his companion were mistaken by authorities of Mantua for brigands and thrown in jail for six days until rescued by his influential friend Geoffroy Charles, to whom he dedicates the book. Horace Mann (1796-1859)
Horace Mann, often called the Father of the Common School, began his career as a lawyer and legislator. When he was elected to act as Secretary of the newly-created Massachusetts Board of Education in 1837, he used his position to enact major educational reform. He spearheaded the Common School Movement, ensuring that every child could receive a basic education funded by local taxes. His influence soon spread beyond Massachusetts as more states took up the idea of universal schooling.
Mann's commitment to the Common School sprang from his belief that political stability and social harmony depended on education: a basic level of literacy and the inculcation of common public ideals. He declared, "Without undervaluing any other human agency, it may be safely affirmed that the Common School...may become the most effective and benignant of all forces of civilization." Mann believed that public schooling was central to good citizenship, democratic participation and societal well-being. He observed, "A republican form of government, without intelligence in the people, must be, on a vast scale, what a mad-house, without superintendent or keepers, would be on a small one." The democratic and republican principals that propelled Mann's vision of the Common School have colored our assumptions about public schooling ever since.
Mann was influential in the development of teacher training schools and the earliest attempts to professionalize teaching. He was not the first to propose state-sponsored teacher training institutes (James Carter had recommended them in the 1820s), but, in 1838, he was crucial to the actual establishment of the first Normal Schools in Massachusetts. Mann knew that the quality of rural schools had to be raised, and that teaching was the key to that improvement. He also recognized that the corps of teachers for the new Common Schools were most likely to be women, and he argued forcefully (if, by contemporary standards, sometimes insultingly) for the recruitment of women into the ranks of teachers, often through the Normal Schools. These developments were all part of Mann's driving determination to create a system of effective, secular, universal education in the United States.

ACTE I , SCENE PREMIERE .
Sabine.
Approuvez ma foiblesse, et souffrez ma douleur ;
elle n' est que trop juste en un si grand malheur :
si près de voir sur soi fondre de tels orages,
l' ébranlement sied bien aux plus fermes courages ;

96. Memories Of Forty-Eight Years Service
A personal account of service during the Zulu War, the Boer War and World War One, written by General Sir horace SmithDorrien.
http://www.richthofen.com/smith-dorrien/
British General Sir Horace Lockwood Smith-Dorrien is famous for his part in two famous events; the Battle of Isandhlwana in 1879, and the Battle of Le Cateau in 1914. At Isandhlwana, he was one of only five soldiers to survive the Zulu Army's envelopment of an invading column of British troops. At Le Cateau, he successfully guided the Second Corps of the British Expeditionary Force in France through one of the most difficult operations possible, that of a fighting withdrawal.
In 1915, as the vicious trench fighting of the western front heated up, he was one of the first senior Allied officers to request a change of methods in order to reduce the appalling casualties already being suffered. Instead of being encouraged in his efforts, he was removed from command by his less than imaginative superior, Sir John French. It will never be known how differently the war in the trenches might have developed had Smith-Dorrien remained on the scene. But the loss of such a capable commander of long experience most likely caused more hardship than otherwise might have occurred.
The excerpts below are from Smith-Dorrien's 1925 book Memories of Forty-Eight Years Service . This 500 page memoir begins with his service as a young man in Africa during the Zulu War, moves on to Egypt, India, Malta, further African service during the Boer War, and finally his famous tour of duty in Belgium and France during World War One. Note that due to its great length and the wide variety of subjects, select chapters will be presented in regular installments.

Walpole, Horace
24 September 1717 - 2 March 1797
The Castle of Otranto , published on Christmas Eve in 1764 (the year in which James Watt perfected the steam engine, thus laying the groundwork for the Industrial Revolution), more-or-less began the Gothic as we know it. Initally accepted rather favorably, Otranto was villified by the press once it was revealed, in the second edition, that the work was not in fact a translation of an old manuscript but the contemporary creation of the politically and socially well-connected son of a Prime Minister. Walpole's drama The Mysterious Mother , never performed in his lifetime, dealt with another topic that would attract much (scandalized) attention in the Romantic period: incest.

Texas Recognized School, 2000 - 2001 Welcome to Horace Mann Junior School Pride and tradition are trademarks of Horace Mann Junior School. Established in 1927, Horace Mann has educated junior school students in Baytown for over 70 years. The original building, located on Pruett Street, served students until the 1993-94 school year when the current state-of-the-art facility was opened on the outskirts of Baytown at 310 South Highway 146. Many positive changes have taken place in the eight years since the move to the "new" Horace Mann. However, citizens of Baytown can be assured that one thing has not changed - - the high quality of education that has become the tradition of Horace Mann. Our mission and goals… Horace Mann Junior School is committed to providing a safe educational environment that will meet the needs of all students. Every student will have the opportunities to meet the challenge, achieve success, and prepare for responsible citizenship. We strive for the following:
