Housman Housman is a wonderful, lyrical poet. I bought this collection after having seen The Invention of Love on the London stage. Most beautiful of all, to my mind, is the poem entitled "To an Athlete Dying Young". This was the eulogy read by Isak Dinesen at Denys Finch-Hatton's funeral in the movie "Out of Africa". The poem, which was originally included in "A Shropshire Lad" (1896) begins: "The time you won your town the race, We chaired you through the market place. Man and boy stood cheering by and home we brought you shoulder high. Today the road all runners come, Shoulder-high we bring you home. And set you at your threshold down, Townsman of a stiller town. Smart lad! to slip betimes away from fields where glory does not stay And early though the laurel grows It withers quicker than the rose... And round that early laurelled head Will flock to gaze the strengthless dead, And find, unwithered on its curls, A garland. Briefer than a girl's."

Acrodermatitis Enteropathica. A hereditary disease of childhood. Symptoms include a severe rash, loss of immune function, and drastic behavioral changes. See E. J. Moynahan: ``Acrodermatitis enteropathica: a lethal inherited human zinc deficiency disorder,'' Lancet , vol. , pp. 399-400 (1974). Apparently, the disease results from a genetic defect that prevents breakdown of tryptophan before the point where picolinate is produced. The picolinate shortage is apparently most noticeable in the reduced ability to extract zinc from food in the intestines. Other chelators, particularly hydroxyquinoline, are effective substitutes.

Learn more at its entry in WebElements and its entry at Chemicool The Roman god Mercury, typically depicted with winged feet (depictions do often include toes, though), was the god of thieves and translators, so hermeneutics was named after him (his Greek name is Hermes), as have a number of newspapers, including the San Jose Mercury Hatters once used the red oxide of mercury as a coloring, poisoning themselves in the process. Born 26th. March, 1859, in Fockbury, Worcestershire, England; died 30th. April, 1936, in Cambridge, England.
British poet. His father was a country solicitor who took to drink. His mother died when he was twelve. His brother Laurence was also gay, and his sister was a lesbian. A. E. Housman went to Bromsgrove School where he won prizes for his poetry. He won an open scholarship to St John's College, Oxford in 1877. At Oxford he developed a 'passionate attachment' to a fellow student, Moses Jackson with whom he shared rooms, but who did not reciprocate his feelings. A. E. Housman's realisation of his own homosexuality may have distracted him from his studies. He was also worried about his father's illness and bankruptcy. He was also stubbornly concentrating on his classical studies at the expense of his other subjects. The combination of circumstances may explain why he failed the finals of his degree in 1881. He obtained a pass degree the following year. He is said to have told Moses Jackson that he was the reason why he wrote poetry and was the subject of many poems.

On the idle hill of summer,
Sleepy with the flow of streams,
Far I hear the steady drummer
Drumming like a noise in dreams. Far and near and low and louder
On the roads of earth go by,
Dear to friends and food for powder,
Soldiers marching, all to die. East and west on fields forgotten
Bleach the bones of comrades slain,
Lovely lads and dead and rotten; None that go return again. Far the calling bugles hollo, High the screaming fife replies, Gay the files of scarlet follow: Woman bore me, I will rise. Our Services Translation Transcription Interpreting Conference Services ... Litigation Support Search Our Site-

A.E.Housman: An Introduction
As its title suggests, this is a lecture which introduces its audience to the life and work of the poet and classical scholar A.E.Housman (1859-1931). Housman, whose book of poems entitled A Shropshire Lad has never been out of print since its first publication in 1896, was a fine poet whose emotional life was deeply troubled, and whose story is well worth hearing.

A.E. Housman
Profile
Alfred Edward Housman, classical scholar and poet; was born at Valley House, Fockbury near Bromsgrove in Worcestershire. His father was a solicitor and one of his younger brothers was the novelist and dramatist Laurence Housman . Alfred was educated at King Edward's School, Bromsgrove and St. John's College, Oxford where, to his shame and humiliation, he failed his final examinations. From 1882 to 1892 he worked at the Patent Office in London and, in his spare time, devoted himself to classical studies and to thereby establish himself as a scholar to regain his pride. lie was also writing some poetry during this period but it was his brilliant articles on the classics in scholarly journals which gained him a high reputation and led to his appointment as Professor of Latin at University College, London in 1892. He remained there until 1911 and became a respected and renowned scholar. An apparently rather dry and austere man (at least to those who did not know him well), he astounded his students and colleagues by the publication of his first collection of poems A Shropshire Lad (1896), astounded them because of the contrast between the romanticism of the poems and the outward severity of the man they knew as their Professor of Latin.

Read his poem "When I Was One-and-Twenty"
Variant Name(s): Alfred Edward Housman (full name); Tristram (pseudonym)
Nationality: English
Career: Poet, critic, essayist, translator, editor, educator, and civil servant Housman was born in 1859 in Fockbury, Worcestershire, England. The eldest of seven children in a family that would produce a famous dramatist (Housman's younger brother, Laurence) and a novelist and short story writer (his sister Clemence), Housman attended Bromsgrove School, a notable institution that emphasized Greek and Latin studies. Though successful academically, Housman was a small and frail boy who did not easily form friendships. When he was twelve, Housman's mother died, the first of a number of events which would affect him profoundly and erode his religious faith. (Years later he would write that he "became a deist at thirteen and an atheist at twenty-one.") He also developed a pronounced facial tic that he never entirely overcame. Housman earned a scholarship to St. John's College, Oxford, which he began attending in 1877. He immersed himself in the study of classical languages, particularly Latin and Greek, and he also helped to found

Of all writers, Housman's name is the most closely associated with South Shropshire, and in particular with the Clun Valley and Ludlow. He was professor of Latin at Trinity College Cambridge, but grew up in urban Bromsgrove. Nearby, but worlds apart from the life of rural Shropshire which he idealised. Shropshire was the western horizon of his childhood, the 'Blue Remembered Hills', and he was inspired by the beauty of the landscape throughout his life. His best known work is the poem A Shropshire Lad published in 1896. Romantically pessimistic, it was not a success at first but gradually gained admirers during the years leading up to the first world war. Many of the poems were set to music by Vaughan-Williams and other composers of the time, bringing his works to a larger, international audience. The Housman Society was founded to foster interest in the poetry of Housman. They can be contacted at

I heard a wise man say,
"Give crowns and pounds and guineas
But not your heart away;
Give pearls away and rubies
But keep your fancy free."
But I was one-and-twenty,
No use to talk to me. When I was one-and-twenty
I heard him say again,
"The heart out of the bosom
Was never given in vain; 'Tis paid with sighs-a-plenty And sold for endless rue."
