89. Thomas Wyatt And Henry Howard
Sir Thomas Wyatt and henry howard, the earl of Surrey. Genre All ofthese are technically lyric verse, except Wyatt's verse satire
http://faculty.goucher.edu/eng211/thomas_wyatt_and_henry_howard.htm
Sir Thomas Wyatt and Henry Howard, the earl of Surrey Genre: All of these are technically "lyric verse," except Wyatt's verse satire ("Mine Own John Poins") and Surrey's translation from Virgil's Aeneid II. The term comes from Greek poetry where it defined poems made to be sung to the strumming of a lyre or small harp. The English favored the lute, a cousin of the guitar, so many of these poems might better be called "lute songs." If they actually had music, it has been lost, however, so they exist only as shadows of their original composition. The lute song, Wyatt's most common genre, may be in varying rhyme schemes and meters but generally tends toward short, trimeter or tetrameter lines with refrains. The sonnet (from French, "little song"), which both Wyatt and Surrey adapted from Petrarch, is a lyric probably not meant for instrumental accompaniment and reliably composed of fourteen lines of iambic pentameter. For a guide to the growth of the sonnet, including comparisons between Petrarch's sonnets in Italian, a Modern English translation, and Wyatt's and Surrey's adaptation in Early Modern English, click here Characters: The "character" of the lyric's speaker is a curious thing. T.S. Eliot, in "The Three Voices of Poetry," argued that the first or lyric voice was like that of the poet, him or herself, but overheard in the act of speaking to some other hearer, to an allegorized idea, or to some inanimate part of the world. Wyatt, for instance, appears to talk to his lute ("My Lute, Awake") and Surrey utters a strikingly familiar warrior's "boast" of loyalty in the presence of "Love," whom he calls "my lord." Sometimes the lyric's speaker declares madness, rejection, hatred, as well as passionate love, but in all instances the author's position must be treated as something necessarily separate from the speaker's. The division may be tissue thin (see "Who list his ease and wealth maintain" p. 534) but these are not testimonies under oath.

howard, henry, Earl of Surrey. Surrey, henry howard, Earl of (1517?1547),English soldier and poet, son of Thomas howard, 3rd duke of Norfolk.
http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/Biographies/MainBiographies/H/howardhenryear
Howard, Henry, Earl of Surrey
Surrey, Henry Howard, Earl of (1517?-1547), English soldier and poet, son of Thomas Howard, 3rd duke of Norfolk. He was given his title by courtesy in 1524, when his father became duke of Norfolk. Howard served in the war with Scotland in 1542, and in 1543 he fought in Flanders with the English army on the side of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, who was seeking to acquire the Netherlands. The following year he was wounded at the siege of Montreuil; in 1545 and 1546 he was commander of the garrison of Boulogne. Quick-tempered and quarrelsome, he made many enemies and was imprisoned several times for misconduct. Arrested with his father on trumped-up charges of treason, he was condemned and executed in 1547.
Although not primarily a man of letters, Howard greatly enriched English literature by his introduction of new verse forms. His love poems, like those of his contemporary Sir Thomas Wyatt, show the influence of Italian models. The two share the distinction of having introduced the sonnet to English literature. Howard's translation of the second and third books of the Aeneid by Virgil was written in blank verse of five iambic feet, the first use of this form in English. Forty of his poems were printed posthumously in 1557 in Songs and Sonettes, Written by the Ryght Honorable Lorde Henry Howard, Late Earle of Surrey, and Others, and in the same year his translations from Virgil appeared as Certain Bokes of Virgiles Aeneis Turned into English Meter.

    Catherine Howard:
Fifth Wife of King Henry VIII
    Overview
Catherine was one of 10 children of Joyce Culpeper and Lord Edmund Howard (1480-1539). King Henry VIII first became attracted to the young girl Catherine in 1540, when he was seeking to end his politically motivated marriage to Anne of Cleves, to whom Catherine was a maid of honour. He had his marriage to Anne annulled on July 9, and on July 28 Henry and Catherine were privately married. He publicly acknowledged her as queen on August 8. For the next 14 months Henry appeared to be much enamored of his young bride. But shortly thereafter, based on charges of infidelity, Henry beheaded Catherine and her two accused lovers, including her distant cousin, Thomas Culpeper

    100. Henry Howard, King Henry VIII & His Last Execution
henry howard, King henry VIII his last execution. henry howard, Earlof Surrey (ca. 15171547), was the oldest son of Thomas howard
    http://ne.essortment.com/henryviiiwife_rxjl.htm
Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey (ca. 1517-1547), was the oldest son of Thomas Howard, the third Duke of Norfolk. He was the scion of an old aristocratic family, and both his father and his mother had royal ancestors. Two of his cousins, Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard, were among Henry VIII's six wivesand both of them were executed. At the age of thirty, Surrey was also executed on a spurious charge of treason. In fact, he was the last person to be executed during the reign of Henry VIII. His father, the Duke of Norfolk, was spared only because King Henry died before the order of execution could be carried out. From 1530-1532, Surrey lived at Windsor with his father's ward, Henry Fitzroy, King Henry's illegitimate son by Elizabeth Blount. In 1533 Fitzroy, who was the Duke of Richmond, married Surrey's sister Mary. bodyOffer(22823) Throughout his short life Surrey was involved, though only peripherally, in the court intrigues and jockeying for position that characterized the court of Henry VIII. Norfolk, his father, was more directly involved, however, and Norfolk's political maneuvering gave the family's enemies ammunition to bring down the son along with the father. Among the most dangerous of the Howards' enemies were the Seymours, who had been in favor ever since King Henry had married Jane Seymour in 1536. The Seymours accused Surrey of having secretly sympathized with the rebellion of 1536 (also known as the "Pilgrimage of Grace"), which was provoked by the dissolution of the monasteries in England. The truth, however, was that Surrey had actually joined his father in helping to put down the rebellion. Nonetheless, the accusation of complicity in the rebellion led to Surrey's confinement at Windsor from 1537-1539.
