All the Queen's Men A Bouquet of Babies Dying to Please A Game of Chance ... Under the Boardwalk Strangers of the Night by Linda Howard (Pocket, $7.99, PG-13) ISBN 0-7464-4426-4 This anthology contains three previously published Linda Howard novelettes. Each has an unexpected meeting with a stranger that in a short time erupts into a steamy sexual encounter, notwithstanding the fact that there are many reasons not to trust the stranger. Two of the three are heavily into the paranormal. In “Lake of Dreams” Thea Marlow, a house painter by trade, is having recurring nightmares containing sexual experiences with a man who keeps changing names and centuries. The nightmares eventually end in her death by drowning by this same man. The lake had played a major role in her family’s summer lives since Thea and her siblings spent each summer at their cottage there. Her sanity is gradually being eroded by fear and sleeplessness and she decides to confront her newly acquired fear of water by taking a two-week vacation at the lake. Almost immediately she meets the neighbor renting the next-door cottage and, of course, he has the face and physique of the man in her dreams. Enter the paranormal plot.

Success is something that Coach Spencer has worked for during her career as head coach and has attained throughout her tenure. In her first season at the helm of the volleyball team, Coach Spencer led her team to its first of five conference championships, the most of any coach. She also holds the distinction of being the winningest volleyball coach in the University's history. Coach Spencer has recorded over 200 victories while leading her team to MEAC Championships in 1987, 1989, 1991 and back-to-back championships in 1993-1994. Columbia Charleston Greenville-Spartanburg Local Events Yellow Pages Discussion Boards Living Here Back to Home Living Monday, Mar 24, 2003 Readers' Circle Posted on Sat, Jan. 25, 2003 It's easy to detect a winning plot - and endearing hero - in 'Kill and Tell' KILL AND TELL by Linda Howard Atria Books (2002), 310 pages, $18 (hardcover) The only thing new about Linda Howard's "Kill and Tell" is its hardback cover. But if you didn't read it when it was released in paperback in 1998, do so now. "Kill and Tell" is vintage Howard, a keeper in any format. It's missing the humor that made "Open Season" and especially "Mr. Perfect" incomparable. But the intrigue, suspense and romantic byplay definitely make this worth snuggling up with. Karen is a rather weak heroine, especially compared to some of Howard's other leading ladies. But Marc is quite the hero and makes up for Karen, who is rather boring. A brooding Karen goes to New Orleans to claim the body of her estranged father, who was murdered. Marc is the police detective assigned to the case.

Linda W. Cropp
Chairman, Council of the District of Columbia
Linda Washington Cropp became the first woman elected to Chair the Council of the District of Columbia by special election on August 8, 1997. At the general election of 1998, she won 91 percent of the votes as Chair, with a clear mandate to lead the 13-member Council of the District of Columbia. Under her leadership, the District has issued a consensus budget for Fiscal Year 1999 to Congress that will bring D.C. debt from a high of $571 million to less than $42 million. She has sought to win back Home Rule by submitting a balanced budget for three consecutive years in an effort to phase out the Financial Authority. Under her guidance, the Council has approved countless bills and resolutions that promote economic development, employment, health, and the general welfare of the citizens of the District of Columbia. Her career in public service began 28 years ago in the classrooms of the District of Columbia Public Schools. Later, she was elected as the Ward Four representative on the District of Columbia Board of Education, where she also served as vice president and as president for two terms.

As one who held an elected position at the UN, I'm certain it's time for America to leave
It's time the United States considers quitting the United Nations. In the past, only the right-wing fringe argued for pulling out of the U.N., which, after all, was created in 1945, not only with the United States' blessing, but largely at our urging. In the nearly 58 years since, the U.N. has had, at best, a mixed role in preventing and resolving conflict. More often it has served as a debating society, whose member states were as likely to ignore as to adhere to the very covenants, declarations and resolutions they voted to adopt. I say this as someone who has observed the workings of the United Nations firsthand. From 1992-1996, I served as the U.S. expert to the U.N. human rights subcommission, a position to which the U.N. human rights commission elected me. Each August for four years, I traveled to Geneva to participate as a voting member of the subcommission, whose role it was to hear testimony concerning human rights violations around the world. Though we rarely were able to reach consensus about grotesque violations in countries such as China or Cuba, my fellow subcommission members had no trouble condemning the United States for its alleged transgressions, especially our supposed racism. Among the 18 subcommission members, only the British, Ukrainian and Belgian representatives were stalwart friends. Even the Belgian representative reflected his personal rather than his government's views, which he was entitled to do since each of us was supposed to act as "independent" experts. The French delegate was viscerally hostile to anything American; the Norwegian was sanctimonious; the Latin Americans were usually cowardly; the Africans, East Europeans and Arabs, frequently duplicitous.
