Be afraid … and vote for John Howard.
By Peter McMahon
Posted 7/01/03 Sign up here for free email updates! The federal government's 'anti-terror' publicity campaign, which is to cost the taxpayer multimillions of dollars, is a cynical scam designed to enhance John Howard's leadership position and ensure another Coalition government in the next election. The fearful reaction of Australians after September 11 and Bali is not in proportion to the real threat of terrorism, but it serves the direct interests of the mass media and the Howard government and they will try to perpetuate it. Over the Christmas break almost 40 Australians - many of them young - were killed and hundreds injured in horrific circumstances. In all likelihood, 2004 will see hundreds more dead and thousands more injured. The costs of all this carnage and damage to property will run to hundreds of millions of dollars. Just like last year and preceding years.

It's the environment, stupid.
By Peter McMahon
Posted 15/12/01 Sign up here for free email updates! John Howard and the Coalition are back, not least because of Howard’s attention to, arguably obsession with, the arrival of numbers of illegal immigrants in small boats. But if he thinks this was a problem worthy of serious attention, what would he think of the likely arrival of tens of thousands of people from the South Pacific and South Asia as vast areas of land disappear under water due to global warming. Of course, Howard won’t be Prime Minister when this happens, but to help out whoever is he should start to pay genuine attention to the various manifest threats to the environment. Thus, to paraphrase Bill Clinton, his post-election slogan should be: "It's the environment, stupid!" There are a myriad of environmental problems facing Australia, from global warming through to our own specific problems with salinity. For instance, Australia is especially affected by the annual hole in the ozone layer over the Antarctic. We are increasingly impacted upon by disease generated overseas which affect our human, animal and plant populations.

The complex, two-membrane envelope of these bacteria represents a protective shell surrounding the cytoplasm, but at the same time is a formidable barrier to the movement of secretory proteins out of the cell. This barrier must be surmounted, however, for the secretion of both protein toxins and degradative enzymes that provide nutrients for the bacteria. Of special interest is toxin secretion, as it is this feature which differentiates pathogens from the innocuous bacteria which infect us constantly without harming us. We study the type II secretion pathway, in which the extracellular proteins are translocated across the two membranes in separate steps. We are also interested in the processes involved in inward nutrient transport across the outer membrane, in part because of conceptual as well as mechanistic similarities with toxin secretion. Our studies can also lead to new insights concerning more fundamental aspects of the Gram negative envelope, such as the role of the outer membrane phospholipase of

Very young when his family lived in Scotland, Peter Howard McBride began an eventful life there. Many years later, after the family had migrated to America, he began to write in diaries and journals, which he continued to do most of his adult life. Much of his history we glean from these sources. Born May 3, 1850, in the town of Rothsay on the tiny Isle of Bute, Scotland, Peter was but a little over three years old when the family moved to England. The youngest in a family of one sister and two brothers, Peter had a keen recollection of his life on the island with them and his parents, Robert 3rd and Margaret Howard and his fraternal grandparents. (Peter would subsequently have a younger sister, Margaret Alice, after their move to England.) Quoting from Peter's journal: My grandfather was a sailor. I have heard him say that he had landed in every port that a ship could stick its hull. I well remember when he anchored his ship close to our home on the Isle of Bute, launched a boat with his effects and rode toward shore, got a wheelbarrow and piled his things on it. He placed me on top the load and we hurried for the house. A wave struck, and by the time we were up the hill the water stood thirty feet where we had just been. My grandfather had a fine home in Ireland, but he was seldom there. When I was three years old our family moved from Scotland to Churchtown, England where my mother's people lived, then to Southport, England. On our way from Scotland we stopped off at the Isle of Mann. What interested us children most was to see that all the cats were bobtailed. (Although Peter did not know it at the time, these were the famous Manx cats)

    Literature and the Digital Media
Peter Howard Poet http://www.hphoward.demon.co.uk/poetry/ Personal computers doubtless have great potential for extending the boundaries of literature in all sorts of ways. Such literature is, of course, accessible only to those who can afford the technology and are able to learn how to use it. We are on the threshold of this becoming a reality: already there are writers who use digital media exclusively, but there are also many readers who do not access them, either through technophobia, or indifference. 100 years ago children would read to their illiterate parents, and today, parents are being shown how to use computers by their children. In many senses, there's nothing new. In many others, it's all new. The Internet breaks down geographical boundaries, but can't do anything to change the human desire to form communities. People still tend to be very territorial in cyberspace, establishing new, virtual communities. e.g. email lists, newsgroups, CompuServe and AOL forums, web-based discussion groups. The Multi-User Dimension Object Oriented programs (MOOs for short) construct models of buildings, where people can move around, look at things, modify the structure, and 'talk' to each other. LinguaMOOs, pioneered by Cynthia Haynes and Jan Rune Holmevik are MOOs designed for writing. In a sense they models of literary societies, where people can write, share their work and so on. These new social structures are where any new literature will be forged. They are culturally and geographically more diverse, but I foresee that writers will still tend to team up with others with common aspirations and outlooks.
