The Wilderness Society Media Release
John Howard and Peter Beattie win "Golden Bulldozer Award"
Date: 05 June 2002
The Wilderness Society is pleased to announce Queensland Premier Peter Beattie and Prime Minister John Howard as joint winners of the World Environment Day "Golden Bulldozer Award" for presiding over one of the highest rates of land clearing in the world. Protesters gave Mr Beattie the Golden Bulldozer trophy at an event in Roma Street Parklands in Brisbane this morning. Mr Howard will be presented with his award at the next opportunity. "The Prime Minister's own Science and Innovation Council released a report this week which calculates that controlling land clearing in Queensland would create economic benefits in the order of $4 billion dollars" said Land Clearing Campaigner Louise Matthiesson. "These top scientists say that for every dollar spent controlling land-clearing, we will save $20 by avoiding future salinity problems, preventing greenhouse gas emissions and protecting native wildlife." "Between them, John Howard and Peter Beattie have presided over the destruction of around 1.7 million hectares of bushland in the last four years."

Child in a Straw Hat - Paul Cezanne
Two Poems
by Peter Howard Uninteresting Numbers That there are no uninteresting natural numbers
can easily be proved by induction, thus: if every number up to (say) n
is interesting, then if n+1 were uninteresting it would be the first such number, which would (of course) make it interesting. Therefore, we only have to prove
the existence of one interesting number, and 'one' will do, for reasons which are too uninteresting to recapitulate. There you have it. But the number of
possible poems is so large as to be uninteresting, whichever way you calculate it.
Which is an interesting, and reassuring paradox for those who have an interest in such things. Heather... Heather, getting ready to go out... Five minutes to off:
"Nearly ready!"
emerging, naked from the shower. Heather, dancing... blue lights on the hi-fi stack
closed, deep-red curtains
gas fire glowing pink t-shirt
short black skirt bare feet hair, the mirror's gold frame. Heather at the computer... a rattle of short machine-gun bursts: these words are going to stay processed.

The Poetry Kit Interviews Peter Howard
Tell me about your background. Where were you born and brought up? Do you come from a literary family? Both my grandfathers were coal miners. My mother's parents were very religious and I suspect that influenced her to train as a teacher. My father was a postman and a butcher's boy before World War II, and then joined the RAF Regiment. (The RAF Regiment operated searchlights and AA artillery at airfields. The Army had previously done those jobs, but there were conflicts of interest and loyalty.) When he was demobbed at the end of the war, he joined the teacher training scheme, specialising in Science (he'd always been interested) and English (he knew how to read). In fact, he read voraciously. It's probably not surprising, given their backgrounds, that my parents pushed me quite hard. But the answer to your question, is probably "Not in the sense that most people would understand it." When did you start writing poetry? I was interested in poetry from quite an early age. I remember a book of poems I had when I was about six. In London, James Reeves' "Prefabulous Animiles" was a big hit with my sister and me. (My father got housemaid's knee from giving us Hippocrump Rides.) I had a bit of an adolescent reaction against it, but then an inspirational English teacher (Oliver Goldfinch) read us Shelley's "Ozymandias" and that got me hooked again. But I don't think I started

Peter Howard Backes
The Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law and The Brief have lost one of their greatest friends. On September 17, 1997, Peter Backes died together with eleven colleagues from Germany, the United States, Great Britain, and Poland in a helicopter crash near Fojnica in central Bosnia-Herzegovina. Peter Backes graduated from the LL.M. program at WCL in 1995. He was a highly respected and loved alumni of WCL. Peter truly loved Washington, D.C. He was born there in 1963, and then raised in Germany, where he also became an attorney. Many times, however, he had confided to his friends in the LL.M. program that the year 1994-95 in Washington was one of the happiest of his life. During that year he was a well known and active member of WCL's community. He was an editor of The Brief and he helped organize various conferences and events hosted by the Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law. He refused to let himself be categorized in one of the four specialties of the International Legal Studies Program because he was convinced that all fields of law were interrelated. His deepest interest lay in the field of international relations and the mediating role that international law can play in solving conflicts. Peter himself had taken the initiative to go on what would be his last mission to Bosnia. He felt that it was important to witness the local elections in Bosnia on September 14, 1997. He wanted to be there, to be a part of the process. He wanted to go to the so called "hot spots" where he had previously been with Dr. Schwarz-Schilling and where they had had the most difficult meetings with unreconcilable local leaders. After having observed the elections, Peter decided to stay in Bosnia a few days longer. He joined an international team which included Ambassador Dr. Gerd Wagner and Deputy of the High Representative for Bosnia-Herzegovina, Carlos Westendorp, which would go to another region of Bosnia that Peter knew well. There, too, he desperately wanted to see if there had been any progress since his last visit. The tragic accident in the hills of Bosnia ended his mission for peace and justice.

Prognet Position Statement from Howard Bowman, John Derrick and Peter Linington
Analysing and specifying programmable networks
There are many aspects to the use and construction of programmable networks, ranging from architectural to engineering concerns. One important facet of their use is the inherent complexity of the behaviour that dynamically programmable networks can exhibit. In order that such networks can be used in a safe and secure environment it is necessary to be able to both model, analyse and specify their behaviour. The use of distributed systems architectural frameworks (such as the Open Distributed Processing (ODP) reference model) provide mechanisms to cope with some aspects of these problems. The use of intelligent agents within a programmable network adds complexity across a number of layers. In addition to the analysis and modelling the interaction of the agents themselves it is necessary to be able to resolve their behaviour (individually and collectively) against network wide enterprise and policy concerns. One approach to the resolution of such behaviour is to apply techniques for dealing with separations of concerns across viewpoints within the ODP model. Significant features of ODP include object based specification and programming, use of transparencies to hide aspects of distribution and viewpoints. The latter of these has particular significance; it provides a fundamental separation of concerns, enabling different participants to observe the system from suitable perspectives and at suitable levels of abstraction. It is a pivotal device for structuring and managing complexity. The use of viewpoints in ODP mirrors their increasing importance throughout software engineering. Formal methods have an important role to play in this work, and work on combining different formalisms and languages can also inform solutions for less formal languages, e.g. UML.
