Conan The Barbarian Page
Conan the Barbarian was the brainchild of Robert E Howard, a pulp fiction writer of the 1920's and 30's. Howard was primarily interested in telling stories using characters, not telling stories about characters. There is an important difference. Howard was a master at the storytelling art and his Conan stories are the best representative of this, using a writing style that none have duplicated Howard painted a portrait of a savage barbarian, of gigantic strength and ability, but he was not a do-gooder, rather someone who followed his own code of honor and tried to stay alive in a world full of perils. If you are looking for a little escapist fiction, a brief respite from the trials and tribulations of the day.....and willing to swing a mighty broadsword to hack down enemies....to snatch a lusty kiss from a willing wench, whether barmaid or queen....to ride with your wild henchmen in search of half-forgotten treasure no doubt guarded by minions of devils from the darkest pits....I would heartily recommend searching for the original 12 books, and after that...who knows, you might try some of my recommended ones below.
If you have seen any of the movies, forget them. Though entertaining and quite good as barbarian epics go, the movies failed to capture the essence of Robert E Howard's Conan. Howard's worlds were rich in decadent civilizations, forgotten treasure still buried amongst ancient ruins, Wizards who actively practiced their magics and called up monstrosities from beyond, that could only be defeated by cold steel and mighty muscles to power it.

Robert E. Howard
THE major Sword and Sorcery author, creator of Conan (the barbarian) and Kull (the conqueror). A trademark in these stories was that males and females were treated equally. Attended Howard Payne College. Lived and worked in Cross Plains, Texas. While reasonably successful at seeing his work published, many of Howard's stories were incomplete or unpublished, as was the majority of his poetry, when he chose to end his life by gun-shot in 1936. Given the time period Howard allowed himself, the amount of writing is awesome. Howard was writing in, at least, six genres at once. REH, as he is now familiarly known, wrote in a four by eight foot room, often to exhaustion, and explained that his talking out loud was a way of working out stories and since he authored many boxing stories, his shadow-boxing is understandable. But this type of genius, as anyone knows who has witnessed it, is unsettling from a distance. Howard's novel Post Oaks and Sand Roughs is claimed to be a slightly fictionized autobiography of an earlier time in his life.

37. Robert Howard Gamble
The story of Lieutenant Gamble of the 11th Infantry, American Expeditionary Force, killed in action at St Mihiel in 1918.
http://www.cstone.net/~rgamble/users/Lt.RobertGamble.htm
Robert Howard Gamble (1893-1918) 2nd Lieut. 11th Infantry U.S. 5th Division During the Great War [all thumbnail images on these three pages are click-able for more detail] Robert Howard Gamble was born January 17, 1893 in Narberth, Pennsylvania, into a family which had contributed soldiers and officers to every war in America's history. Twenty-five years later, early in the morning of September 12, 1918, 2nd Lieutenant Robert Gamble would end his life charging a German machine-gun in the American attack at St. Mihiel. It was two months before the armistice concluding the War to End All Wars. Gamble was an energetic, frolicsome youth. His great-niece recounted that as a teenager he often climbed a tree in the Gamble's Haverford, Pennsylvania backyard, to sneak a cigar. When his mother caught him, Mrs. Gamble used to scold her six foot three inch son: "you'll stunt your growth." Gamble went to prep school at Andover where he was in the K.O.A. Society. He is listed as an alumnus of the Andover class of 1911, but actually left in 1910 with his studies incomplete, to enroll at Yale. At Yale Gamble played on the soccer team all four years. His senior year his teammates voted him Captain. He was a member of Alpha Delta Phi, and evidently enjoyed fraternity life a little too much since he neglected his studies and lingered on the verge of expulsion.
