Battle Hymn of the Republic Story of the Battle Hymn of the Republic
These were the days of the Civil War; we must return back to its opening year to record and episode of importance to her [Julia Ward Howe] and to others. "I could not leave my nursery to follow the march of our armies, neither had I the practical deftness which the preparing and packing of sanitary stores demanded. Something seemed to say to me, 'You would be glad to serve, but you cannot help anyone; you have nothing to give, and there is nothing for you to do.' Yet, because of my sincere desire, a word was given to me to say, which did strengthen the hearts of those who fought in the field and of those who languished in the prison."
"John Brown's body lies a-moulding in the grave.
His soul is marching on!" The soldiers liked this, cried, "Good for you!" and took up the chorus with its rhythmic swing. "Mrs. Howe," said Mr. Clarke, "why do you not write some good words for that stirring tune?" "I have often wished to do so!" she replied.

91. Julila Ward Howe Writes The "Battle Hymn Of The Republic"
julia ward howe’s Account of the Writing of the Battle Hymn of the Republic .This extract comes from julia ward howe’s Reminiscences, 18191899.
http://johnbrownsbody.net/JWHSong.htm
of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" Reminiscences, 1819-1899 . It is the best source document we have on the writing of the poem. We were invited, one day, to attend a review of troops at some distance from the town. While we were engaged in watching the manoeuvres, a sudden movement of the enemy necessitated immediate action. The review was discontinued, and we saw a detachment of soldiers gallop to the assistance of a small body of our men who were in imminent danger of being surrounded and cut off from retreat. The regiments remaining on the field were ordered to march to their cantonments. We returned to the city very slowly, of necessity, for the troops nearly filled the road. My dear minister [James Freeman Clarke] was in the carriage with me, as were several other friends. To beguile the rather tedious drive, we sang from time to time snatches of the army songs so popular at that time, concluding, I think, with "John Brown’s body lies a-mouldering in the ground;
His soul is marching on."

Women in the Civil War
Julia Ward Howe
Julia Ward Howe, 1819-1899
Howe was and is most famous for having written the words to a war song, "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." She worked with her husband, Samuel Gridley Howe, on abolitionist causes. We do not know whether Julia agreed with all Samuel did in this area, but Samuel Howe is often believed to be one of the "Secret Six" who bankrolled John Brown’s actions. For the liberation of the slaves the Howes would back war. But after the war when Julia Ward Howe saw the devastation left behind in her own land and saw the Franco-Prussian War beginning across the Atlantic she turned her efforts to the development of an international Mothers’ Day for Peace. She suggested June 2 as the date, since by then there should be good weather for the marches and demonstrations that were to be the focus of the day. For several years after 1870 women in Boston, New York, Philadelphia and other American cities and in England, Scotland and Switzerland celebrated June 2 as a rallying day for peace. Unfortunately, despite these women’s counsels they did not find the "means whereby the …human family can live in peace." In Julia Ward Howe’s later years she found herself involved in supporting Russian freedom and in support for the Armenians in the Turkish wars. She had two great causes in her life, peace and equality. Sometimes for equality she sacrificed peace. But she found that to sacrifice equality for peace was often too high a price to pay.

Julia Ward Howe
American author and reformer, born in New York City. She was
associated with her husband, Samuel Gridley Howe, in his
humanitarian work and in editing and contributing to the Boston
Commonwealth, an antislavery paper. Inspired by a visit to a Union
army camp during the American Civil War (1861-1865), Howe wrote
the famous poem "Battle Hymn of the Republic," which, after
publication in The Atlantic Monthly in 1862, immediately achieved
great popularity as a song of the Civil War. After the war, Howe was active in the women's rights movement as a founder of both the New England Woman's Club and the Association for the Advancement of Women. She also headed the American branch of the Woman's International Peace Association. She was the first woman to be elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Howe's works include the Life of Margaret Fuller (1883), From Sunset Ridge: Poems Old and New (1898), and Reminiscences 1819-1899 (1899).

Julia Ward Howe: a short biography
Julia Ward Howe, who is best known for her literary and woman suffrage work, was born on May 27, 1819 into a prominent New York City family that had a distinguished lineage on both sides. While she was raised in a conservative, Christian home, as a young woman she rebelled against her father's strong Calvinist beliefs. Even though she became a liberal thinker, she always stood firm in her religious convictions. Since Julia's mother died when she was only five years old, she was raised by her father with the help of various family members. Her father saw to it that she received the best education available. She attended various private girls’ schools and was also tutored at home. She grew into a gracious and intelligent young woman with a strong literary bent. Due to her remarkable abilities, she was readily accepted into the society of such notables as Margaret Fuller, Horace Mann, and Ralph Waldo Emerson. bodyOffer(21932) In 1843, Julia married the Boston Reformer, Dr. Samuel G. Howe, nearly 20 years her senior. While it was a stormy marriage, at best, they had four children. Julia proved to be a remarkable mother and all of her children went on to become eminently successful in the fields of science and literature. Though Dr. Howe did not approve of married women in public life, Julia did, however, pursue her writing career, even against her husband’s wishes. In 1954, despite her husband’s disapproval, Julia anonymously published her first volume of poems, “Passions Flowers”. It was met with success and she continued writing and publishing volumes of poetry, several plays, and many magazine articles on various themes. This caused friction between husband and wife as Dr. Howe emphatically objected to Julia’s speaking in public and pursuing her literary career.
