Photographs of Ted Hughes
Ted Hughes at Lurley Manor
As many visitors to this website will know, the friendship between Ted Hughes and Leonard Baskin, the American artist and sculptor who illustrated many of Hughes' volumes of poetry, blossomed after their first meeting in 1958, when Hughes was teaching in America. Early in 1973, Leonard and his wife, Lisa, visited England and, at Ted and Carol Hughes' urging, began to look for a house in Devon. They fell instantly in love with the second one they saw, Lurley Manor, a small manor house of Elizabethan origin, close to Tiverton, and not far from the Hughes'. They were to occupy the house for a decade. The Baskins were immensely warm and hospitable and Lurley Manor soon became a stopover for an unending stream of fellow artists, writers, curators, antiquarians and bookdealers, the last always bearing carloads of further offerings for the Baskins' already great library. The atmosphere at Lurley was highly convivial, whether round the excellent dinner table and afterwards at the fireside; or during the working day, when Leonard welcomed guests to his sculpture studio, and wide-ranging conversation continued unabated while he worked. A regular visitor was, of course, Ted Hughes.
In early 1976, Baskin met Noel Chanan, a documentary film-maker and photographer, who lived nearby. They formed what was to prove a deep and lasting friendship. Not long after their first meeting, Chanan began what evolved into a long-term work of dedication, photographing Baskin's work in progress, Baskin himself, and often the visitors to the studio. It was in the relaxed and intimate atmosphere of the sculpture studio, in 1979, that these portraits of Ted Hughes were taken. In the background of some of the photographs we can see rough pencilled outlines on a massive block that was soon to become a monumental woodcarving, entitled "The Temple".

HUGHES, Ted The Iron Man (a.k.a. The Iron Giant) Illustrated
by Andrew Davidson Average rating:
3.5 out of 5 (14 reviews)
The reading age would be 9 to 100. It has average pictures but the words are very descriptive and they made me feel excited. I liked it when the Iron Man fought the Space-Bat-Angel-Dragon.
The Iron Man ate all the farmers' metal e.g. tractors so all the farmers made an enormous hole. They waited for days to see the Iron Man and the Iron Man fell into the hole but he got out and Hogarth took him to the scrapyard.
A space-Bat- Angel-Dragon landed on Australia and fought the Iron Man, but the Iron Man won the fight.
Reviewer: Elliot C, aged 9, St George's School, Wanganui, NZ
I rated this book: 5 out of 5
[Add my own review!] [Main book review index] Top of this page The book the Iron Man has great pictures, but very few and no colour.
The reading ages are 10 up to 30 years old.
