bernice T. hunter. bernice hunter thurman was born in Toronto in 1922. Youcan find out more about bernice hunter thurman at the following site
http://redcedar.swifty.com/2000/Author_Bios/hunter.htm
Bernice T. Hunter Bernice Hunter Thurman was born in Toronto in 1922. She has been interested in writing since childhood. In her teens she met her idol, L. M. Montgomery (author of Anne of Green Gables ). The famous author complimented her good imagination and true-to-life characters however, she also advised her that a writer must have a university education. Unfortunately, Bernice came from a very poor family and had no chance to go to university. Even so, while raising her children she continued to write, often making her children heroes in her stories. Much later, after they were grown up, Bernice sent a story to a newspaper – her first published work! From there she went on to publish numerous stories for children in magazines and anthologies. Her novels, especially the Booky trilogy, are autobiographical in mature and give an interesting historical look at earlier times in Ontario. Author's reflections on the book: I was always fascinated with my cousin Amy's story and I was grateful to her when she gave me permission to write it. Since the publication of Amy's Promise I have been deluged by letters full of questions about Amy's family, including, what happened to baby Janey? Janey was just a tiny baby when her mother died, so her Aunt Bessie, her mother's older sister, and Bessie's husband, Uncle Wallace, took her home to live with them in Winnipeg. At the end of

GREYSTONE SCHOOL FOR HOMELESS BOYS. The big scrolly letters across the black iron gates made Graham feel more of an orphan than he had ever felt before.
Mother Button pushed open the heavy gates and they walked up the flagged path to the huge grey stone building. Two wide steps flanked the heavy arched doorway.
The door was opened almost instantly by the biggest man Graham had ever seen. His body filled the doorway, towering over him and Mother Button.
There were papers for Mother Button to sign, and Graham had to sign them, too. He could hardly see through the blur of tears so he just signed on the dotted line where Mother pointed. From The Runaway

Write a letter to an imaginary friend to tell that friend what' s happening in your life - or in your cousin's life, or your dog's life, or your iguana's life (even if you don't have an iguana). If the truth needs rearranging, do it. If made-up parts make the story better, add them. Throw your ingredients into the pot and stir! Palette Borgeois
If you have trouble ending your stories, why not start your story at the end? Make up a great last line and then work backwards, asking yourself questions like: How could this happen? Whom did this happen to? What were those characters like? Lyn Cook
Lyn Cook has discovered all kinds of ideas for her books by learning about her family history and about the history of Canada. Inquire into your own family or community history and write a story based on what you've learned. Martyn Godfrey
When kids ask Martyn how to be funny in a story, he tells them to do three things. One: Create a ridiculous character (some of Martyn's favourites can be found in books by Gordon Korman). Two: Put that character in a ridiculous situation (for example, knocking over a vase on a class trip to a museum). Three: Include slapstick which includes a person in authority who has been written to be unlikeable (for example, the vase falls on the principal's head). Try it yourself!
