He was born in 1894 into a famous English family. He went to Eton and was expected from the moment of his entry to Balliol College, Oxford to achieve greatness. Though his early life was attended by personal adversity - the death of his mother when he was fourteen and the onset of an eye disease that left him virtually blind three years later - he bore it with a fortitude that left his impact undiminished. By the mid-1920s he had become firmly established as a member of the legendary Garsington Manor literary set that counted among its number Virginia Woolf, DH Lawrence, TS Eliot, Lytton Strachey and Robert Graves. However, despite this background, and despite his decision to become a novelist, the focus of Huxley's life was not to be conventionally literary. Throughout his life he retained a high-brow detachment from the practicalities of everyday life (for example, he didn't even know how to dry a drip-dry shirt, once attempting to do so by whirling it around his head while standing on the roof of a New York hotel). But he nevertheless developed a powerful interest in the world of science and technology that the literary world so disliked. Indeed, the theme that was to come to preoccupy his work was the gap between these two worlds, between what CP Snow later called the "Two Cultures" of science and art. For Huxley, it was a damaging split that cut deep into modern life, dividing fact from fiction, mind from body, humanity from the universe.

While Island is a work of fiction, it is the vehicle Huxley used to communicate his ideas about how people in a good society would interact with each other and their environment. The plot is a wonderful story in its own right, and it's best to read the book, not a synopsis, to fully enjoy it.
