by Elbert Hubbard
in Little Journeys to the Homes of the Great , Vol. X , Great Teachers
Done into a book by the Roycrofters at their shops in East Aurora, Erie County, New York page 270 Neo-platonism is a progressive philosophy, and does not expect to state final conditions to men whose minds are finite. Life is an unfoldment, and the further we travel the more truth we can comprehend. To understand the things that are at our door is the best preparation for understanding those that lie beyond. - Hypatia
Hypatia
page 271 The father of Hypatia was Theon, a noted mathematician and astronomer of Alexandria. He would have been regarded as a very great man had he not been cast into the shadow by his daughter. Let male parents beware. At that time, astronomy and astrology were one. Mathematics was useful, not for purposes of civil engineering, but principally in figuring out where a certain soul, born under a given planet, would be at a certain time in the future. No information comes to us about the mother of Hypatia - she was so busy with her housework that her existence is a matter of assumption or a priori reasoning; thus, given a daughter, we assume the existence of a mother. Hypatia was certainly the daughter of her father. He was her tutor, teacher, playmate. All he knew he taught to her, and before she was twenty she had been informed by him of a fact which she had previously guessed - that considerable of his so-called knowledge was conjecture.

HYPATIA
Natural Philosopher (355? - 415 CE) She is one of the more romantic figures in science. She was the daughter of Theon, a mathematician who taught at the great school at the Alexandrine Library. She traveled widely and corresponded with people all over the Mediterranean. We know of her only through her letters. She taught at the school in Alexandria, Egypt. Letters written and addressed simply to the philosopher were delivered to her. She taught mathematics and natural philosophy. She is credited with the authorship of three major treatises on geometry and algebra and one on astronomy. She invented several tools: an instrument for distilling water, an instrument to measure the specific gravity of water, an astrolabe and a planisphere. She died violently. She was dragged to her death by a mob who pulled her from her classroom into the streets where they peeled her to death with oyster shells. She wrote that All formal dogmatic religions are fallacious and must never be accepted by self-respecting persons as final. Reserve your right to think, for even to think wrongly is better than not to think at all.

31. LaVern Baker-AHS2
Research paper with footnotes.
http://hypatia.wright.edu/dept/eng/blakelock/rockweb2/w99/lavernbake.htm
By Alicia Schimeneck "LaVern Baker 1991, Performer" - Click here to take a closer look at LaVern) Ms. Baker's phenomenal career continued to blossom throughout the fifties, but many obstacles lay ahead for this young talented black woman. Being "one of the first Atlantic artists to crossover to the pop charts" (Gaar 9) she became the figure who represented the gradual acceptance of black musicians by white audiences. She faced constant scrutiny from both the public and the rock world, but some white audiences as well as blacks continued to show LaVern their support by listening and becoming more interested in r & b artists like herself. The tide began to turn slightly further for black artists as r&b increased in popularity and songs that previously only hit on the r&b - black- charts began to generate interest on the Top 40 - white - charts as well (Gaar 6). Engulfed by this political and musical transition, Ms. Baker was still able to rise to the top. Although Ms. Baker achieved some success, her many struggles surfaced once again when she "suffered from the segregationist impulses of the larger culture by having her songs 'covered' by a white singer, Georgia Gibbs, whose sanitized versions greatly outsold Baker's own" ("L.B. '91 Performer "). A particular incident in 1955 involving Georgia Gibbs and an imitation of Ms. Baker's "Tweedle Dee" infuriated her so much that she contacted her Congressman. In the end nothing resulted from the incident, "but it shows the rock'n'roll spirit of LaVern Baker, whose similar gobs of spunk, fire, and wit gave greatness to all her hits" (Marsh).
