Hypatia
Online Resources Texts: Hypatia Texts: Hypatia Book Series Used Books: Hypatia ... Are you an Author? Dear Future People by Anne Nolting Dear Future People is a novel which describes the climax of the Hellenic Age in Egypt. Events follow historic accounts of the civil war between Rome and Constantinople, the destruction of the Temple of Serapis, the ethnic cleansing and massacre of Gothic youth, and a trip down the Nile to seek a prophesy for Emperor Theodosius. Hypatia, a woman, was destined to stand at the center of this time of political power struggle. In translation, quotes from the period are woven into the story. Hypatia was born in the later part of the Roman Empire, an era when women were not free to pursue careers. This was a time when orthodox belief effectively wiped out centuries of scientific discovery. Ancient Greek works were torched and scholars were murdered. Hypatia was the last proprietor of the Hellenic Age wonder, the Library of Alexandria. She is portrayed as a young adult facing the issues of a changing world. The reader will discover uncanny parallels to many current situations within the United States and, indeed, the world. Hypatia, a real, historically documented heroine, is a find for today's young adults who are searching for strong, non-fiction role models.

Of Hypatia the Female Philosopher.
THERE was a woman at Alexandria named Hypatia, daughter of the philosopher Theon, who made such attainments in literature and science, as to far surpass all the philosophers of her own time. Having succeeded to the school of Plato and Plotinus, she explained the principles of philosophy to her auditors, many of whom came from a distance to receive her instructions.

Biography of Hypatia
Born in Alexandria, Egypt around A.D. 370, Hypatia is the first woman known to have actively participated in an academic community. She lectured in Alexandria on Plato, Aristotle, and other philosophers, and although none of her work is extant, she reportedly wrote commentaries on Diophantus's Arithmetica , and Apollonius's Conic Sections . She may also have assisted her father, Theon of Alexandria, a scholar at the Museum, in writing a commentary on Ptolemy's Almagest Her association with Greek philosophy and pagan religion, as well as her friendship with Orestes, the Roman prefect of Alexandria, seems to have led to her death in 415. Orestes became embroiled in a power struggle with Cyril, the archbishop of Alexandria. At the height of the conflict, Orestes executed one of Cyril's followers. In retaliation, a mob attacked and brutally killed Hypatia, believing that she had been instrumental in preventing a friendship between Cyril and Orestes. LINKS MISCELLANEOUS Free Updates Masthead NYC Weather A CurtainUp Review Hypatia or The Divine Algebra by Les Gutman For those of you who missed Rinne Groff's math play, The Five Hysterical Girls Theorem , my recent review linked below, Mac Wellman has scheduled something in the nature of a make-up class. It considers Hypatia (Sophia Fox-Long), the 5th Century mathematician, pagan philosopher and inventor considered so inherently dangerous that Christian monks found it necessary to drag her through the streets of Alexandria, Egypt, before dismembering and then burning her body. Wellman's new play follows Hypatia's imaginary trajectory from that spectacle through 8th Century Byzantium and then on to the early 20th Century, when she wanders into Alexandria, Virginia and first lays eyes on a bicycle. With the wide-eyed innocence of a child, she trades her most valuable possession for the bike. And what possession is that? A pot of gold, perhaps? An Egyptian relic? No. It's the number zero (the cipher), the "mark of emptiness."

Hypatia
Alexandrian Thinker and Mathematician
Hypatia was the daughter of Theon, a teacher who was one of the most educated men in Alexandria, Egypt. Hypatia was raised in an environment of thought by Theon who was himself a well known scholar and a professor of mathematics at the University of Alexandria. Theon and Hypatia formed a strong bond as he taught Hypatia his own knowledge passion for answers to the unknown. Hypatia surpassed her father's knowledge at a young age. However, while Hypatia was still under her father's discipline, he also developed for her a physical routine to ensure for her a healthy body as well as a highly functional mind. Theon instructed Hypatia on religion and the fundamentals of teaching and oration. Hypatia's studies included astronomy, astrology, and mathematics. References in letters by Synesius, one of Hypatia's students, credit Hypatia with the invention of the astrolabe, a device used in studying astronomy. However, other sources date this instrument back at least a century earlier. Claudius Ptolemy wrote extensively on the projection used on the plane astrolabe, and Hypatia's father wrote an astrolabe treatise that was the basis for much of what was written later in the Middle Ages. Hypatia did teach about astrolabes as Synesius had an instrument made that was argueably a form of astrolabe. Hypatia is known primarily for her work on the ideas of conic sections introduced by Apollonius. She edited the work "On the Conics of Apollonius," which divided cones into different parts by a plane. This concept developed the ideas of hyperbolas, parabolas, and ellipses. Hypatia is thought to be the first woman to have a profound impact upon mathematics and thought, simplifying Apollonius' concepts on conics.

The Martyrdom of Hypatia (or The Death of the Classical World)
by Mangasar Magurditch Mangasarian
A speech given before the Independent Religious Society at the Majestic Theater in Chicago Our subject this morning takes us to the city of Alexandria, one of the greatest intellectual centers in the days when Athens and Rome still ruled the world. The capital of Egypt received its name from the man who conceived and executed its design Alexander the Great. Under the Ptolemies, a line of Greek kings, Alexandria soon sprang into eminence, and, accumulating culture and wealth, became the most powerful metropolis of the Orient. Serving as the port of Europe, it attracted the lucrative trade of India and Arabia. Its markets were enriched with the gorgeous silks and fabrics from the bazaars of the Orient. Wealth brought leisure, and it, in turn, the arts. It became, in time, the home of a wonderful library and schools of philosophy, representing all the phases and the most delicate shades of thought. At one time it was the general belief that the mantle of Athens had fallen upon the shoulders of Alexandria. But there was a stubborn and superstitious Oriental constituency in the city which would not blend with the foreign element namely, the Greeks and the Romans. This antagonism between the Egyptian born and the children of Hellas and Rome, who were Alexandrians only by adoption, was frequently the occasion of street riots, feuds, massacres, and civil wars.

Hypatia (355 or 370 - 415)
philosopher, astronomer and mathematician Hypatia's father, Theon of Alexandria, was a teacher of mathematics with the Museum of Alexandria in Egypt. A center of Greek intellectual and cultural life, the Museum included many independent schools and the great library of Alexandria. Hypatia studied with her father, and with many others including Plutarch the Younger. She herself taught at the Neoplatonist school of philosophy. She became the salaried director of this school in 400. She probably wrote on mathematics, astronomy and philosophy, including about the motions of the planets, about number theory and about conic sections.

Philosopher, astronomer and mathematician, she headed up a Neoplatonic School, part of the Museum of Alexandria, Egypt. Her students were pagan and Christian young men from around the empire.
