His early years were lonely and miserable. Distressed by the consequences of his family's financial ruin and on his own at sixteen, he first was apprenticed to an apothecary. Not long after this he began writing poetry, and in 1850 he published his first play, Catilina, a tragedy in verse. In 1851 he began an extended apprenticeship in the theater, first as stage manager and playwright with the National Stage in Bergen and in 1857 as theater director for the Norwegian Theater in Oslo. His early plays for the most part went unrecognized or were greeted with opposition and critical hostility. As a man far in advance of his times, Ibsen was condemned for unveiling truths which society preferred to keep hidden. In 1864, dissatisfied with the backwardness of Norway, he went to Italy. Ibsen, Henrik
Dramaturgo noruego, 1828-1906.

Henrik Ibsen

Playwright Norway Born 20 Mar 1828
Died 23 May 1906
Henrik Ibsen was born in Skien, Norway. His family went bankrupt when he was a child, and he struggled with poverty for many years. His first ambition was medicine, but he abandoned this to write and to work in the theatre. Of his early verse plays, 'The Vikings at Helgeland' is now best remembered. In the year of its publication, 1858, he married Susannah Thoresen, a pastor's daughter.
A scholarship enabled Ibsen to travel to Rome in 1864. In Italy he wrote 'Brand' (1866), which earned him a state pension, and 'Peer Gynt' (1867), for which Grieg later wrote the incidental music. These plays established his reputation. Apart from two short visits to Norway, he lived in Italy and Germany until 1891.
From 'The League of Youth' (1869) onwards, Ibsen renounced poetry and wrote prose drama. Though a timid man, he supported in his plays many crucial causes of his day, such as the emancipation of women. Plays like 'Ghosts' (1881) and 'A Doll's House' (1879) caused critical uproar. Other plays included 'The Pillars of the Community', 'The Wild Duck', 'The Lady from the Sea', 'Hedda Gabler', 'The Master Builder', 'John Gabriel Borkmann' and 'When We Dead Wake'.
Towards the end of his life Ibsen, one of the world's greatest dramatists, suffered strokes which destroyed his memory for words and even for the alphabet. He died in Kristiania (now Oslo).

Ibsen.net
REVIEW: Skien was Ibsen's birthplace and his home as a child. Ibsen.net describes an initiative to celebrate the association between writer and location. There is a noticeable fondness in the way this great figure is being marked (and marketed) in Skien. A caricature of Ibsen adorns the web pages, the Ibsen Room at Skien Library and is made three-dimensional in the Ibsen Prize. The site contains a few short articles on Ibsen and Skien by Cand. Philol. Helge Bugge Eriksen, together with the first chapter of Michael Meyer's bibliography of Ibsen. This fondness is being fostered despite Ibsen's decision to leave Skien and his unease with the 'spiritual trends' he found there as he matured and which emerged from 'pastor Lammer’s pietistic revival movement' ( www.ibsen.net/skole_oppvekst_en.htm ). The web-site suggests that plans are in hand for a significant celebration of Ibsen in 2006 (100 years after his death) and that these will include electronic resources. However, a few years seem to have passed without additions to the site and it will be interesting to see how the uneasy relationship between author and Skien is re-examined in the years leading up to this time.

    Biographical note
Influential Norwegian playwright who was largely responsible for the decline of the Victorian drama and the rise of the Modern. His plays were considered scandalous in much of society at the time, when Victorian values of family life and propriety were still very much the norm, and any challenge to them considered immoral and outrageous. Ibsen's work examined the realities that lay behind many a facade, which the society of the time did not want to see. More ...
