Previously, they had teamed to make the critically acclaimed MY LEFT FOOT, for which Day-Lewis received his best actor Academy Award, and IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, which garnered seven Oscar nominations, including best actor and director. Unlike those first two films, THE BOXER is a purely fictional tale set against the backdrop of the troubles in Northern Ireland. The film is, among other things, a Romeo and Juliet - type love story. Its two main characters, Danny and Maggie, had been lovers years ago before Danny was imprisoned, and upon his release, the flames of love are re-lit. However, Maggie is now married to an imprisoned member of the IRA. The rules say that if you get involved with the wife of a jailed comrade - you're a dead man.
