RISKING ALL FOR GOLD AND GRIZZLIES
By John Irving Seven Rivers West By Edward Hoagland. LIKE any adventurer, Cecil is leaving one life to find another. A life of action, a constant confrontation with the new and the dangerous, holds Cecil's guilt at bay; but at night he dreams about his daughter's death, and he misses his wife and son -''so wretched that his chest felt as though his heart would quit on him, he stood up, lay down, and stood up to look at the shapes of the horses in the light of the moon.'' In his portrait of Cecil Roop, Mr. Hoagland implies that a certain veteran sadness underlies the men who explore our frontiers: ''Between his own people and his wife's family, he knew that they were eating well -they had plenty of uncles - but he had lost them for himself.'' Sutton and Cecil secure the services of a Kluatantan Indian woman who becomes Sutton's mistress - on the trail, she will sleep with Cecil just often enough to make him jealous of Sutton. Her name is Margaret -the original Margaret, after whom the Margaret River was named. That's how new the country is: the people who give the mountains and rivers their names are still alive. Cecil and Sutton know they'll need Margaret's assistance with the other Indians they'll encounter in their travels. They also acquire a sidekick worthy of a John Ford western: Charley Biskner, a mountain man, who sizes up Cecil and Sutton on the merits of Cecil's dogs. ''If you're thieves you're not run-of-the-mill,'' Charley tells them. ''I like your dogs. You have a safe camp.''

THE SALON INTERVIEW john irving. BY JOAN SMITH. it was john irving's highschoolwrestling coach, Ted Seabrooke, who told him that talent is overrated.
http://www.salon.com/march97/interview970303.html
T H E S A L O N I N T E R V I E W J O H N I R V I N G Literature's muscle man talks about how he wrestled his writing career to the ground and why he'd like to grind critics' faces into the mat. BY JOAN SMITH it was John Irving's high-school wrestling coach, Ted Seabrooke, who told him that "talent is overrated. That you're not very talented needn't be the end of it." Seabrooke also told him: "An underdog is in a position to take a healthy bite." And Irving, who counted himself neither a born athlete nor a born writer he was dyslexic before that particular learning disability had been identified by name took Seabrooke's words as a kind of mantra. "I was an underdog," the bestselling novelist writes in "The Imaginary Girlfriend," a long, autobiographical essay in his new collection of short pieces, "Trying to Save Piggy Sneed." "Therefore, I had to control the pace of everything. This was more than I learned in English 4W, but the concept was applicable to Creative Writing and to all my schoolwork, too. If my classmates could read our history assignment in an hour, I allowed myself two or three. If I couldn't learn to spell, I would keep a list of my most frequently misspelled words and I kept the list with me; I had it handy even for unannounced quizzes. Most of all, I rewrote everything; first drafts were like the first time you tried a new takedown you needed to drill it, over and over again, before you even dreamed of trying it in a match. I began to take my lack of talent seriously."

TRYING TO SAVE PIGGY SNEED
By John Irving
432 pages. Arcade Publishing. $21.95. ''Trying to Save Piggy Sneed,'' John Irving 's eclectic new anthology of fiction and nonfiction, bears the same relationship to his eight published novels as a tasting menu does to a restaurant's full-course dinner. It offers the reader a representative sample of Mr. Irving 's work that highlights both his weaknesses and his strengths: his fondness for elaborate, tricked-up plots; his penchant for eccentric characters who come to violent or bizarre ends; his Vonnegut-inspired taste for little homilies (''Repetition is boring. And you pay for grace.''); and his predilection for cloying cuteness, which manifests itself most frequently in a proliferation of fictional bears: circus bears, pet bears, even people in bear suits.
Text:
A presiding theme in Mr. Irving's best-known novel, ''The World According to Garp'' (1908), was the relationship between mundane reality and a writer's imagination, and this same theme percolates through the stories and essays in ''Piggy Sneed.'' In fact, many of the fictional heroes in this collection are given to melodramatic daydreaming that transforms the banal surface of their daily lives into the sort of antic extravaganzas found in Mr. Irving's own novels. The protagonist of a 1980 story called ''Interior Spaces,'' for instance, imagines climbing onto his neighbor's roof to remove the walnuts that have fallen into the rain gutters and immediately envisions the headlines in the morning papers: ''Doctor Takes Four-Story Fall! Urologist Beaned by Nut! Career Cut Short by Deadly Tree!''

86. John Irving | About The Book
This is how john irving's tenth novel begins; it seems, at first, tobe a comedy, perhaps a satire, almost certainly a sexual farce.
http://www.randomhouse.com/features/johnirving/about_book.html
The Fourth Hand asks an interesting question: "How can anyone identify a dream of the future?" The answer: "Destiny is not imaginable, except in dreams or to those in love."
While reporting a story from India, a New York television journalist has his left hand eaten by a lion; millions of TV viewers witness the accident. In Boston, a renowned hand surgeon awaits the opportunity to perform the nation's first hand transplant; meanwhile, in the distracting aftermath of an acrimonious divorce, the surgeon is seduced by his housekeeper. A married woman in Wisconsin wants to give the one-handed reporter her husband's left handthat is, after her husband dies. But the husband is alive, relatively young, and healthy.
This is how John Irving's tenth novel begins; it seems, at first, to be a comedy, perhaps a satire, almost certainly a sexual farce. Yet, in the end, The Fourth Hand is as realistic and emotionally moving as any of Mr. Irving's previous novelsincluding

John Irving spins a love story, his way
By Dorman T. Shindler
Special to the Journal Sentinel May 24, 1998 A Widow for One Year. By John Irving. Random House. 608 pages. $27.95. For romantics who can't stomach the saccharine sweetness of books like "The Bridges of Madison County" or "The Notebook," there is still hope: Its name is John Irving. In his first novelistic outing since "A Son of the Circus," his 1994 novel set in India, the author has created an old-fashioned love story John Irving-style, of course. The story begins in 1958 when its central protagonist, Ruth Cole, is only four. Her parents, Ted and Marion, are separated. They take turns spending a week in their "real" house in the Hamptons with Ruth while alternately living in a rented beach house (where they are free to entertain "guests" of the opposite sex). Their marriage, which was never a solid one, has fallen apart following the deaths of two teenage sons five years before. They are the epitome of a rich, dysfunctional family.

Corrections The John Irving rules Oscar watch: The author of "The Cider House Rules" talks about his Academy Award nomination, abortion and his strange fixation on oral sex. By Jeff Stark J ohn Irving's new book, "My Movie Business," explains how he wrote, rewrote and re-rewrote the script to the film version of his novel "The Cider House Rules" all over a period of a dozen years and with the involvement of no fewer than four directors. His book finally landed in the hands of Lasse Halstrm, the Swedish filmmaker best known for "My Life as a Dog" and "What's Eating Gilbert Grape." The movie that resulted ended up as one of the year's sleeper hits and earned a surprising seven Academy Award nominations, including one for best picture and another, for Irving, for best adapted screenplay. The book is an unlikely epic, following the father-son relationship of Dr. Wilbur Larch, the head of a Maine orphanage and an accomplished abortionist, and a seemingly unadoptable orphan, Homer Wells. (Larch is played by Michael Caine, nominated for best supporting actor; Homer is Tobey Maguire.) After Homer returns from his fourth foster family, Larch trains him to become a doctor, to make himself useful. But Homer eventually evinces a deep philosophical opposition to abortion; this leads to his setting off on a 15-year journey, during which he works at a New England apple orchard and falls in love with his best friend's girlfriend.
