Math professor Irving Segal dies at 79;

CAMBRIDGE, MA MIT Professor Emeritus Irving Segal, 79, a pioneer in the fields of functional analysis and harmonic analysis, died unexpectedly while walking near his home in Lexington, MA, on Sunday evening (Aug. 30). An MIT faculty member for 38 years, Professor Segal was one of the Department of Mathematics' most dedicated teachers, contributing significantly to the review and upgrading of its curriculum. He was advisor to a number of outstanding graduate students, among them MIT professors Isadore Singer and Bertram Kostant (now emeritus) and Princeton professor Edward Nelson. "His encouragement was strong when I was writing a thesis," Professor Nelson recalled in the 1983 book Studies in Applied Mathematics, which is dedicated to Professor Segal, "and equally important was his total lack of encouragement when I found a result unrelated to anything beyond itself. This sense of the global nature of mathematical research is one of the most valuable things that he imparts to his students." Born in the Bronx on Sept. 13, 1918, Professor Segal was raised in Trenton, NJ, and received the BA from Princeton in 1937 and the PhD from Yale in 1940, both in mathematics. He was an instructor at Harvard University in 1941 and a research associate at Princeton from 1941-43 before entering the US Army as an enlisted man. After military service during which he performed ballistics research at the Aberdeen (MD) Proving Grounds, Professor Segal did research work at the Institute for Advanced Study from 1945-48 before moving to the University of Chicago. He was an assistant professor from 1948-53, an associate professor from 1953-57 and a full professor from 1957-60. He came to MIT in 1960 as a professor of mathematics and assumed emeritus status in 1989.

This report of all USMS All-Americans and each year they were named is new and your help is needed to improve it. Whereever one swimmer's All-American honors are divided over more than one name, as might happen when names are changed in marriage, we should change all information to the current name. Please report any data you observe where this correction needs to be made. Further, this report is made possible by the use of a "permanent swimmer id code" . When the "permanent swimmer id code" is assigned to one swimmer, it will never be assigned to another. The intent is to continue to use the same code even when the swimmer stops swimming so that the clear identification of this person and his or her swimming records will never be never lost. So, please report multiple names for the same person, or any missing information, or other comments, by clicking on the mailbox above or below. "...an insightful and constructive view of persons with dementia and their caregivers."
Carroll L. Estes Many strategies developed by caregivers are self-defeating, Lyman found. Drawing on personal reflections, interviews, and anecdotes, she demonstrates how caregivers' struggle to maintain order through often unnecessary control contributed to patients' increased sense of self-doubt, anxiety, and incompetence. Negative expectations by caregivers brought on depression and rapid intellectual decline in patients, a "sense of hopelessness" that has been called "therapeutic nihilism." Lyman identifies unsupportive institutional policies, restrictive environments, and poorly organized programs as chronic sources of stress. The alternatives she offers meet caregivers' needs and permit clients a degree of self-determination and identity. Her model for care will be of great interest to gerontological professionals, policy makers, and family members dealing with victims of Alzheimer's disease.
Reviews
"[A]n insightful, comprehensive analysis of the unique reciprocal relationship between people with Alzheimer's disease and people who care for them. The author's compassionate concern emphasizes the need for innovative methods of care which alleviate stress for the care-giver and distress for the patients...an important book for policy makers, health care administrators, medical and nursing students, and all others who care."

    Karen Boes charged with killing her daughter
    By NATE REENS

    Staff writer A federal investigator who probed the Zeeland fire that killed Robin Boes on June 30 initially determined the blaze was the "classic case of an arsonist who got caught up in their own arson." The investigator and Ottawa County prosecutors say they later determined the arsonist was 46-year-old Karen Boes, the mother of 14-year-old Robin. They believe Karen spread gasoline around the second floor of the house and left after igniting the flames but before her daughter died from smoke inhalation. However, Karen Boes and her defense attorney, David Zessin, contend the only person the arsonist could be is the teen-age girl, who was shocked and knocked down by a flash fire and then trapped in her room at the 523 Williams St. residence.
