Washington-Irving School, Madison Street, Syracuse, NY

The Adult Basic Education program established at Washington-Irving School in 1965 was an early local response to President Johnson's declaration of a war on poverty. The goal of the program was to offer basic education and high school equivalency classes to disadvantaged adults in the Syracuse metro area. In all, I worked as a teacher and counselor at Washington-Irving for more than ten years.

This is a site where we are developing information on Rip Van Winkle by Washington Irving. You can begin by reading the text of Rip Van Winkle . Or you can select one of the analyses below: The outlook for the Tory spy seems grim, yet the reliable values of family and love come to save him. Rip Van Winkle as a fairy tale provides a transitory humorous break from the harsh changes that most americans felt at the time. The dubious nature of the facts and the author's double alias only show how light the subject matter actually ispeople should accept extreme political change with a light heart and an open mind. For closer analysis click here The inherent and transcendent nature of the union between truth and reality is displayed through the hemorraging death of the Dame Van Winkle...Rip Van Winkle conveys succesfully the concept that no matter how the exterior of a concept or situation is changed, its soul stays the same This portion of the study includes a comparison between American Vs European literary tradition and the role Washington Irving plays in establishing an American tradition. This analysis focuses on three points: 1. The author mentions that Americans have no great monuments or known personalities to write about, but
