S ome people are born poets. Others are born something else and become poets.
Mark Jarman was born a poet. He proved it to a crowd of 50 Thursday at the K-State Student Union. "He's the kind of poet I believe," Bryn Gribben, graduate student in English, said. He is not the kind of poet to admit he is a poet by birth. "I found myself when I was 14 writing all kinds of things," Jarman said. He has not stopped writing since. He has published six books of his poetry. Most of his readings were from his recent book, "Questions for Ecclesiastes." The threads that are woven together to create his poems range from religious and spiritual questions and insights, to memories of home and coming to grips with where you are from. "Transfiguration" combines two aspects of Christs life, the transfiguration and the miracles, into one poem. The verses switch from one event to the other. He examines the miracles and the transfiguration with the eye of someone who is trying to see the human side of Christ. "I liked how he intertwined his spiritual and religious ideals into the poetry," Jennifer Buchanan, sophomore in English and history, said.

Under the poplar’s well-fed canopy,
The maple might prefer itself this way,
A spray of knobby sticks, contented with
The meal of meager daylight left to it.
The trees are skin to skin 15 feet up, Until the poplar leans into the fork Of its partner’s yielding, or so it thinks. In fact, the maple throws its limbs apart, Holding its leaves like handfuls out of reach, Resisting a love it can’t seem to refuse. Relieve its misery and cut it down It’s not clear that the killer would survive. And so, unless we want to lose both trees, We let them stay like that. One tree is turning More elegant the more it gives away And the other more dependent on its victim. share it respond Able Muse Contents

otor to the mega mall and the mall moves me to a minor rage. I get in a fight with two women in the mall parking lot, a mother-daughter tag team. Then in the woods a sleek cougar nearly takes my head off, but I said ix-nay.
The story was, I was going to chop us a free Christmas tree, but feeling base and mortal and morbid and pretty fine I collected every damn pill in the trailer, including Flintstones and Aspirin and iron and old tiny Infant Tylenol bottles. What the hell, I'll try anything once. In my pockets I had a dog's breakfast of pills and I felt like a dog, felt lower than a snake's belly.
Things had gone wonky. No jobs in the woods, our old mill sold to foreigners, and foreigners shut it down tight. They don't live here. New softwood agreement too, and Asia gone down the tubes, so we're going right with them, they sneeze and we blow our nose. A letter falls into my black mailbox: they talk of markets, infrastructure, capital costs, mergers, new realities. I imagine them fine-tuning this letter in a meeting over Danish and mineral water. Do they actually know any more than we do?
My tiddly little house is for sale but it's never going to sell because every nice little house is for sale there. I pawned the Husqvarna and moved down island. Everyone laid off. We're global now.

No viven aquí.

Mark Anthony Jarman is the author of the wickedly entertaining novel Salvage King, Ya!: A Herky Jerky Picaresque and the short story collections Dancing Nightly in the Taverns and New Orleans is Sinking . His latest story collection, entitled 19 Knives (Anansi), arrived in spring 2000 to glowing reviews. Jarman is currently teaching creative writing at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton. He is a past graduate of the University of Iowa Writing Seminar. This interview was conducted by email over a number of weeks in the winter 1999/2000.
TDR: Your novel Salvage King, Ya! (about a minor league hockey player near the end of his playing days who has his hands full balancing a girlfriend, a fiancé and an ex-wife) radiates the complexities of 1990s Canada. It also seems to argue with the standard tropes of "Canadian literature" (lush lyricism, small town realism, victim/survival ideology). JARMAN: Does Salvage King argue with standard tropes? I hope it does. I wanted to use them and stand them on their head at same time. I didn't want to write a standard A to B linear plotted book. I don't mind them, many writers are good at them, but I wanted to fool around more. In general, critics sometimes review what they think should be there, not what is actually there; editors and agents can be very conservative about what is allowed, especially compared to art, music, video, etc.

Reviews by Michael Bryson New Orleans is Sinking
by Mark Anthony Jarman
Oberon Press, 1998 In these nine stories, Mark Anthony Jarman shows as much versatility, humour and sensitivity as J.D. Salinger at his best. Jarman's narrators zoom off the page, commanding presences demanding comparisons to past authors, like ol' J.D., who were big and bold. Salinger may not be Jarman's most obvious ancestor, but in his preference for first-person narrations and characters who speak from the margins of their society, Jarman aligns himself strongly with the tradition that sprang Salinger's modern tales of mid-century Romanticism. (The line goes back at least as far as Wordsworth's shepherds.) Jarman's lyricism, likewise, is never far from the surface. His prose sparkles with kinetic energy. Writing teachers would say, "He has a good ear, " or "He has a poet's touch." These statements are true, but they allude to less than the whole story. The sound of Jarman's prose is a significant element of its success, but there is more going on. Hemingway said good prose could reach into the 4th and 5th dimensions. If this is possible, Jarman achieves it. His stories are not simple narration, though their plotting and characters are strong. Neither are the stories simply strongly rhythmic. What the stories achieve is a strong integration of literary elements, and the total effect is often symphonic.
