Robinson Jeffers' Life and Career Arthur B. Coffin JEFFERS Jeffers met Una Call Kuster in 1906; she was three years older than he and married to a prominent Los Angeles attorney. In each other, Jeffers and Kuster found intellectual and emotional stimulation and compatibility that drew them powerfully together. At length, Kuster obtained a divorce and married Jeffers in August 1913. A year later the couple moved to Carmel, where, except for occasional trips to Europe and New Mexico, they spent the rest of their lives. In 1916 they became the parents of twin sons (a daughter born earlier did not survive infancy), and Jeffers began to build a stone cottage for his family. Later he added the famous forty-foot stone tower, the emblem of "Tor House" (as they called their home). Both structuresthe house and the tower overlooking Carmel Bay and facing Point Lobosfigured significantly in Jeffers's life and poetry. As an undergraduate and graduate student Jeffers had regularly contributed poems to various student publications. By 1911 he had written a number of generic love poems to Kuster and other women, and in 1912 he privately published some of these and other works in Flagons and Apples

For Jeffers the world, viewed pantheistically, was marred only by man, a doomed and inverted animal. Robinson Jeffer’s “Hurt Hawks”
  • Notice the solemn, dramatic power and intensity of the first twenty-two lines and the lyricism of the concluding six.
  • Notice how the “feminine feathers” of the dead hawk contrast with the strength of the living hawk.
  • Note the last line: (a sword is unsheathed when drawn from its scabbard. The spirit of the hawk is being freed from the restrictions of earthly reality.)
    Define the following:
    Intrepid:
    Intemperate:
    Indomitable:
    Implacable:
    1) Which words or phrases describe the hawks grandeur before he is wounded?
    2) What 3 works in the first line emphasizes the excruciating pain? 3) In line 7 note the phrase “the lame feet of salvation” What is salvation for the hawk? 4) In what sense does salvation have lame feet? 5) Line 13 speaks of “the wild God of the world.” Who does not understand this wild God? 6) Who does understand him? 7) What action does line 24 describe (“I gave him the lead gift?”) 8) Why might line 25 be indented? 9) The last four lines are a lyrical description of what? Jeffers feels that communal people (civilized and living in communities) do not lead lives of individual integrity as the hawk does. Consequently, they do not achieve the hawk’s style, courage, nobility ,and peace. Hence, nature (the hawk’s world) is so grand and beautiful that man alone seems unworthy of his creator.

English 4391 20th Century American Poetry the avant-garde: Robinson Jeffers and Edwin Muir In their second volume's review, Rothenberg and Joris note that "the time has been remarkable too for the unprecedented degree of participation by poets in the formulationindividual by individual or group by groupof a large array of speculative poetics: writings that assert autonomy and connect the work and life of each poet to the larger human fate." Part of the array concerns "a widely-held belief that poetry is a part of the struggle to save the wild placesin the world and in the mind..." ("Introduction," Poems for the Millenium II, p.12). Below are some examples of such "wild places," in out of the mind, from the American poetry of Jeffers and the Scots poetry of Muir: Robinson Jeffers The Purse-Seine Rock and Hawk Here is a symbol in which Many high tragic thoughts Watch their own eyes. This gray rock, standing tall On the headland, where the seawind Lets no tree grow, Earthquake-proved, and signatured By ages of storms: on its peak A falcon has perched. I think here is your emblem To hang in the future sky; Not the cross, not the hive, But this; bright power, dark peace; Fierce consciousness joined with final Disinterestedness; Life with calm death; the falcon's Realist eyes and act Married to the massive Mysticism of stone, Which failure cannot cast down Nor success make proud. Ave Caesar No bitterness: our ancestors did it. They were only ignorant and hopeful, they wanted freedom but wealth too. Their children will learn to hope for a Caesar. Or ratherfor we are not aquiline Romans but soft mixed colonists Some kindly Sicilian tyrant who'll keep Poverty and Carthage off until the Romans arrive, We are easy to manage, a gregarious people, Full of sentiment, clever at mechanics, and we love our luxuries.
