Biographical sketch. With prayer in traditional and contemporary language.

Jerome, Scholar, Translator, and Theologian
30 September 420
Jerome was the foremost biblical scholar of the ancient Church. His translation of the Bible, along with his commentaries and homilies on the biblical books, have made him a major intellectual force in the Western Church. Jerome was born in about 347, and was converted and baptized during his student days in Rome. On a visit to Trier, he found himself attracted to the monastic life, which he tested in a brief but unhappy experience as a hermit in the deserts of Syria. At Antioch, he continued his studies in Hebrew and Greek. In 379, he went to Constantinople where he studied under Gregory of Nazianzus . From 382 to 384 he was secretary to Pope Damasus I, and spiritual director of many noble Roman ladies who were becoming interested in the monastic life. It was Damasus who set him the task of making a new translation of the Bible into Latin into the popular form of the language, hence the name of the translation: the Vulgate. After the death of Damasus, Jerome returned to the East, and estabished a monastery at Bethlehem, where he lived and worked until his death on 30 September 420. Jerome is best known as the translator of the Bible into Latin. A previous version (now called the Old Latin) existed, but Jerome's version far surpassed it in scholarship and in literary quality. Jerome was well versed in classical Latin (as well as Greek and Hebrew), but deliberately translated the Bible into the style of Latin that was actually spoken and written by the majority of persons in his own time. This kind of Latin is known as Vulgate Latin (meaning the Latin of the common people), and accordingly Jerome's translation is called the Vulgate.

Jerome K. Jerome: The Man
Background
Jerome Klapka Jerome, best known as the author of 'Three Men in a Boat', one of the great comic masterpieces of modern times, was born in Walsall, Staffordshire, on 2nd May 1859, the youngest of four children. His father, who had interests in the local coal and iron industries and was a prominant non-conformist preacher, had moved to the town in 1855 and installed the family in a fashionable middle class house in Bradford Street where they lived in comparative comfort until 1861. Following the collapse of the family business, the Jeromes moved first to Stourbridge and thence to Poplar in the East End of London where he was brought up in relative poverty. Jerome left school at fourteen and variously worked as a clerk, a hack journalist, an actor ('I have played every part in Hamlet except Ophelin') and a schoolmaster. His first book 'On the Stage and Off' was published in 1885 and this was followed by numerous plays, books and magazine articles. In 1927, one year after writing his autobiography 'My life and Times', he was made a Freeman of the Borough of Walsall. He died later the same year and is buried in Ewelne in Oxfordshire.

15. Jerome Kern
Details his role in the evolution of musical theater, especially through Showboat.

Jerome Kern: 1885-1945
by Joel Bernstein Jerome David Kern (born January 27, 1885, New York, New York., Died November 11, 1945, New York, N. Y.) American Composer. First hit, "How'd You Like To Spoon With Me", 1905. Composed nearly 700 songs for 117 shows and films between 1905 and 1945. Those are the bare bones-the statistics that cover the career of one of America's great composers of popular song. But the numbers can never sum up the contribution that Jerome Kern made to the American musical style. For Kern's romance with the musical theatre and film was to produce something new, a type of song unlike any theatre music before it. When Jerome Kern started writing and plugging his songs at the turn of the century the majority of American Theatre music was strongly influenced by the European, or "Viennese" style. Victor Herbert was the master of this kind of writing. Kern's songs, on the other hand, used a fresh, uncontrolled approach to melody which was to modernize the American musical theatre. That's not to say that Kern's music was simple. On the contrary, he was always developing, always experimenting but there were always, as Alec Wilder has said, "those melodies, straight and healthy, and ever green." Jerome Kern moved quickly from a rehearsal pianist and Tin Pan Alley song plugger to a writer whose music, by 1915, was represented in as many as seven or eight Broadway shows a season! Melody seemed to pour out of him and he was known to compose whole scores in a weeks time.

Jerome's History ... queens neighbor art gallery Once known as the wickedest town in the west, Jerome was a copper mining camp, growing from a settlement of tents to a roaring mining community.
Four disastrous fires destroyed large sections of the town during its early history, resulting in the incorporation of the City of Jerome in 1899. A building code was enforced a nd the Jerome Volunteer Fire Department established. The population peaked at 15,000 in the 1920's. The Depression of the 1930's slowed the mining operation and the claim went to Phelps Dodge, who holds the claim today. World War II brought increased demand for copper, but after the war, demand slowed. Dependant on the copper market, Phelps Dodge Mine closed in 1953. The remaining 50 to 100 hardy souls promoted the town as a historic ghost town. In 1967 Jerome was designated a National Historic District by the federal government. Today Jerome is a thriving tourist and artist community with a population of about 450.
