Harold, Barnaby, and Dave:
A Biography of Crockett Johnson
by Philip Nel
On October 20, 1906, in New York City , David Johnson Leisk was born to David and Mary Leisk. Although born on East 58th Street, the young David grew up in Elmhurst , Long Island, where he went to high school and enjoyed sailing his boat in Long Island Sound. He studied art at Cooper Union in 1924, and at New York University in 1925. After his studies, he worked "in an ice plant, and in Macy's advertising department, played professional football, art-edited several magazines and contributed to others ," as he told the authors of Illustrators of Children's Books, 1946-1956
Leisk wrote under the name "Crockett Johnson" because, he said, "Crockett is my childhood nickname. My real name is David Johnson Leisk. Leisk was too hard to pronounce so I am now Crockett Johnson!" (Hopkins 124). According to the Third Book of Junior Authors (1972), he was "six feet tall, tan, husky, and blue-eyed" (153). Like Barnaby and Harold (his two most famous characters), Johnson was bald. Referring to his hairless head, he once remarked, "I draw people without hair because it's so much easier!

You will also find some new Harold adventures based on the cartoons on HBO Family. They may be charming, but they are not by
Crockett Johnson. Crockett Johson also wrote and illustrated Ellen's Lion : For older readers, and now back in print (hooray!), this is a series of stories about a little girl and her toy lion, who in her mind is very much alive. He also illustrated Ruth Krauss' The Carrot Seed , as much a classic as the Harold stories are. Look for these at your local library or independent bookstore; several of the Harold books are available in paperback. HarperCollins, their publisher, is reissuing them in a larger format with jazzed-up cover art. I prefer the originals but it's nice to see that the books remain popular. I've always loved the Harold books, and that's only partly because my name is Harold. That's why when I was creating this web site, I chose the purple crayon theme as a tribute.

Introduction
Crockett Johnson, well known author of the Harold and the Purple Crayon series, writes and draws in a simplistic and touching style that will entertain your child from ages 2-8 without boring you to tears. He generally uses 2 or 4 colors to create imaginitive adventures for his young heroes. His work is to children's books as legos are to their toys- simple on the surface, but containing the building blocks for anything your child can imagine. Johnson has also illustrated other books, such as The Carrot Seed by Ruth Krauss.
Harold's Purple Crayon
Harold and the Purple Crayon are companions on an imaginitive adventure as Harold takes a walk by moonlight. Though he's still young enough to wear pajamas with feet, Harold uses his crayon to draw a night full of adventures with innocent reminders of the best parts of human nature. Eventually, this little boy sets out to find his own window, ending in a good night for everyone. Harold's Fairy Tale begins in an enchanted garden where nothing is growing. Harold must find the King and solve the mystery of the garden so that the flowers can grow. A fantasy adventure for the early ages 2-6, especially appropriate for little daydreamers.
