Johnson, Samuel
Samuel Johnson (1709-84), who was such a dominant literary figure in the second half of the eighteenth century that the period has sometimes been called the Age of Johnson, lived most of his adult life in London. Until the crown granted him a pension in 1763, he had to support himself by his literary activity, including major projects such as the Dictionary of the English Language (1755) and his edition of the plays of Shakespeare (1765), as well as periodical essay series such as the Rambler (1750-52) and the Idler (1758-60), other separate publications such as the poem The Vanity of Human Wishes (1749) and the tale Rasselas (1759), and miscellaneous writing, mainly for a variety of periodicals. His last major literary project was the series Lives of the Poets
In his 92d Rambler essay Johnson states that "criticism reduces those regions of literature under the dominion of science, which have hitherto known only the anarchy of ignorance, the caprices of fancy, and the tyranny of prescription" ( Yale 4:122). For him, the business of criticism is reasoned literary judgment. It may involve, as he remarked in his "Life of Dryden," "general precepts, which depend upon the nature of things and the structure of the human mind" (

Arthur Freeman Rare Books and Manuscripts
'NO MANUSCRIPT OF THE WORK IS EXTANT' [JOHNSON, Samuel. The History of Rasselas, Prince of Abyssinia]. [c. 1790] Manuscript on paper, 8vo., pp. [6] + 242 plus blanks, c. 1790. Old half calf, worn, front cover detached. This extraordinary exercise in literary piety — a complete transcript of the text of Rasselas, beginning with the 'Contents', but no title — is presumably the work of one Ennys Evans, who signs the front flyleaf 'Ennys Evans's Book'; a later pencilled inscription below reads 'William Evans's / Book / September 182- [last digit illegible]'. It testifies to the immense popularity of Johnson's fable, which 'between 1759 and 1800 ... was available in six foreign languages and some fifty editions, English and non-English' (Gwin J. Kolb, in the Yale Johnson, xv (1990), p. 258). Kolb however (who makes quite a point of the transmission of text, and seems to collect reprints) knew of no manuscript version (p. lcvii). Johnson, Samuel Dictionary of the English Language, 2nd abridged London Knapton 1760 Two volumes 8vo; contemporary tan calf, gilt, morocco spine labels, spines and corners rubbed. Second edition of the abridged version of Johnson's Dictionary, 'the most amazing, enduring and endearing one-man feat in the field of lexicography' (PMM). This abridged version, which makes the large folio volumes more manageable and anticipates modern desk reference works, is interesting textually as it contains changes by Johnson himself. Johnson codified English spelling and gave full and lucid definitions, often entertaining like his self-deprecating description of a lexicographer as 'a harmless drudge'., Alston V 194. The Life of Pope
    By Samuel Johnson
Edited by Jack Lynch , Rutgers University
The text comes from The Lives of the Poets , ed. G. B. Hill, 3 vols. (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1905). I have tried to reproduce Hill's text as carefully as possible, departing from it in only the following instances:
    • Hill's paragraph numbers are preserved, but printed in brackets.
    • The oe ligature is reproduced as two letters.
    • The alignment of words on consecutive lines of poetry, which Johnson uses to indicate revision, is not always consistent; HTML does not easily allow that degree of control.
    • Single and double quotation marks are reversed.
    • A break between sections, indicated in the printed text by a skipped line, is indicated with a horizontal rule.
The text is also available in an abridged version , which includes only the passages most often discussed in literature classes. Please send corrections to Jack Lynch at jlynch@andromeda.rutgers.edu
    POPE
] ALEXANDER POPE was born in London, May 22, 1688, of parents whose rank or station was never ascertained: we are informed that they were of "gentle blood"; that his father was of a family of which the Earl of Downe was the head, and that his mother was the daughter of William Turner, Esquire, of York, who had likewise three sons, one of whom had the honour of being killed, and the other of dying, in the service of Charles the First; the third was made a general officer in Spain, from whom the sister inherited what sequestrations and forfeitures had left in the family.

    A Guide to Samuel Johnson
    By Jack Lynch
A number of requests for information on Johnson they come my way because of my Johnson page on the Web and my dissertation largely on Johnson have convinced me to put together a few paragraphs to introduce novices to Johnson. This is nothing like a comprehensive guide to the literature, although I do discuss some real bibliographies. I cover a few works of scholarship, and those not necessarily my favorites they're the ones that I think are most important for a beginner to know, the most often quoted, though not always the most thought-provoking. And this guide is unabashedly opinionated, though I hope my preferences aren't often perversely far from the mainstream. Still, it might be useful for people who've received no more formal introduction to Johnson studies. I don't pretend for a minute that this guide is anywhere near complete or comprehensive it was prepared off the top of my head. I don't know whether my omissions of important material are more grievous than the outright errors that are doubtless in here somewhere. But it might be useful to someone just getting started, and, since it's free, it would be a bargain at twice the price. I welcome comments and corrections; my address appears below.
