Jones, James The Pistol . 158 p. (est.). 5_1/4 x 8 1958, 2003 Series: (PF) Phoenix Fiction Series Paper $12.00 0-226-39186-8 Spring 2003 As bombs begin to fall on Pearl Harbor, nineteen-year-old PFC Richard Mask is wearing a pistol, a .45 caliber automatic that makes him feel connected to the army of the Wild West and Custer's Cavalry. In the chaos of his first days and weeks of the war, as Mask and his company move from Schofield Barracks to the beaches of Oahu, then to a remote mountain pass, a struggle over the pistol dominates this novella's action, providing the pathos and savagery of the story. Every effort is made to get it away from Mask, but he is obsessed by his need for the weapon. It becomes, for him and the men around him, the last chance for personal salvation. "A novella of many excellences. . . . Writing war in miniature, Jones nevertheless achieves a picture of men of large significance and stature."Riley Hughes, Catholic World "A little jewel, tautly constructed, economical, but withal vivid in incident, attention-compelling in the narrative, and psychologically convincing. . . . This is a compelling picture of man's fear of the unknown, and the measures he will take to protect himself against it."Taliaferro Boatwright

Jones was founded in the early 1890’s by James Jones a trained machinist and craftsman who had emigrated from England just prior to founding Jones. In its early years, Jones manufactured all types of bronze products, including bronze candelabras, casket handles and mausoleum doors, although valves were the predominate product line. In 1926, Jones built it’s first bronze fire hydrant at the request of the Fire Chief of Monrovia, California. The Jones bronze wet barrel hydrant remains the preferred fire hydrant in most parts of California. Today, Jones remains the only bronze foundry offering a full line of waterworks products on the west coast.

Status in 1973: Missing in Action Category: Aircraft/Vehicle/Ground: Ground Other Personnel in Incident: Raymond L. Echevarria and Eddie L. Williams (missing); Bui Kim Tien (rescued) REMARKS: SYNOPSIS: On 3 October 1966, SFC James E. Jones, SFC Raymond L. Echevarria and then SFC Eddie L. Williams were members of a 7-man reconnaissance team comprised of the three Americans and four Vietnamese ARVN soldiers. The team was inserted by helicopter into rolling jungle covered mountains approximately 2 miles south of a primary east/west road, 3 miles west of the Lao/South Vietnamese boarder, and 13 miles north-northeast of Muang Xepon, Savannakhet Province, Laos. This location was also 11 miles south of the 17th parallel, which separated North from South Vietnam, and 24 miles northwest of Khe Sanh, South Vietnam. Their mission was to locate and report on enemy activity moving through this portion of eastern Laos on its way into the acknowledged war zone. Further, this area of eastern Laos they were operating in contained a major artery of the infamous Ho Chi Minh Trail. When North Vietnam began to increase its military strength in South Vietnam, NVA and Viet Cong troops again intruded on neutral Laos for sanctuary, as the Viet Minh had done during the war with the French some years before. This border road was used by the Communists to transport weapons, supplies and troops from North Vietnam into South Vietnam, and was frequently no more than a path cut through the jungle covered mountains. US forces used all assets available to them to stop this flow of men and supplies from moving south into the war zone.

JONES, JAMES HENRY (1830-1904). James Henry Jones, attorney, Confederate Army officer, and United States representative, was born in Shelby County, Alabama, on September 13, 1830, the son of Willis H. and Mary H. (Taylor) Jones; he was raised in Talladega County. He was admitted to the bar in 1851 and established a practice in Henderson, Texas. With the outbreak of the Civil War qv he raised and took command of a company that was later part of Col. Oran M. Roberts's qv Eleventh Texas Infantry. After promotion to lieutenant colonel, Jones commanded the regiment during the Red River campaign in the absence of Colonel Roberts and was wounded at the battle of Pleasant Hill. Thereafter he was promoted to colonel, and at the war's end he was commanding the Third Brigade of Walker's Texas Division. He returned to Henderson and was elected a delegate to the Democratic national convention in 1880 at Cincinnati, where he cast his ballot for Gen. Winfield Scott Hancock. qv In 1883 Jones was elected to the United States House of Representatives from the Third District of Texas; he was a member of the Forty-eighth and Forty-ninth congresses, 1883-87. There he served on the Committee on Post Offices and Post Roads and the Committee on Mines and Mining. He returned to Texas in 1887 and resumed his law practice at Henderson, where he died on March 22, 1904. He is buried in the New Cemetery there. James Henry Jones was the brother of Tignal W. Jones;

In July 1822 the brothers found Jane Long qv on the San Jacinto River and took her to San Antonio. On August 10, 1824, James Jones received title to a league and a labor of land in what are now Fort Bend and Wharton counties; he settled in Fort Bend County near Henry Jones. qv James Jones's wife, Hetty (Styles), was a sister of Mrs. Henry Jones. In 1826 James Jones was aged between twenty-five and forty. Ammon Underwood qv visited the James Jones plantation in January 1835. Jones served in the Texas Army under Capt. e-mail this article another review of Space Cowboys by Paul Varner Some People Call Me Maurice T he aging Clint Eastwood may act like a cantankerous old coot, but everyone knows that he's still the great American Hero, fiercely loyal, exceedingly courageous, and wily like a fox. In his newest film, Space Cowboys Space Cowboys presents Eastwood as a very smart fellow who, along with a team of seventysomething ex-Air Force test pilots, saves the planet from certain destruction. Eastwood plays team leader and engineer extraordinaire Frank Corbin, whose circa-1969 Skylab guidance system has "somehow" ended up on Ikon, a Russian "communications satellite." The verbal equivalents of these scare-quotes come up in various conversations about the mission, ominously indicating that something is not quite right about said mission, and that Clint will, by film's end, be his usual awesomely righteous self and then some. e-mail this article another review of Space Cowboys by Cynthia Fuchs Just Another Cowboy Movie C lint Eastwood, I guess, will always see himself as the ultimate icon of masculinity for his generation. The young Eastwood saved the Western film genre in the 1964 with the ultra-hip postmodern shoot-em-up A Fistful of Dollars . Then, in 1992, he brought us the aging gunfighter Will Penny in Unforgiven and showed his boomer generation that real men can keep their private parts intact even as they age. Now, once again, he puts on his spurs, so to speak, and with Space Cowboys Ever since Gene Roddenberry adapted old Wagon Train scripts for his early Star Trek episodes, space stories have relied heavily on the Western formula, and Space Cowboys Shane , or John Wayne's The Shootist High Plains Drifter (1973) and Unforgiven . With Space Cowboys , he falls into traps he rarely has fallen into with the Westerns. Particularly, he confuses surface realism with realism of character and life. The line between good Westerns and bad Westerns, or between good films and bad films, at least in an artistic sense, is traditionally drawn according to their abilities to offer unique interpretations of life, and in particular, how they reveal meaning in our lives.
