Classroom Issues and Strategies
The typical problems in teaching Baraka's poetry have to do with what has been called his "unevenness"perhaps more accurately attributable to the tension inherent in balancing Baraka's role as poet and his role as activistand the strident tone of some of his poemsalso related to his political activism. Both problems are probably best addressed directly by inviting the students to describe or characterize their impressions of the impetus for the poems as they read them (stressing "their reading" is critical and complements what current reading theory regards as the essential role of the reader in any reading paradigm), then asking them to substantiate textually those impressions. Such a strategy finesses the temptation to engage in a definitive debate of the politics of the time as the genesis and raison d'être of Baraka's poetry. Further, such a strategy allows students to explore the aesthetics as well as the politics of his poetry and understand better the inter/inner-(con)textuality of the two. Because the "sound" of Baraka's poetry is essential to texturing or fleshing out its meaning, readings aloud should contribute to discussions as well as to the introduction to his work.

Amiri Baraka, born Everett LeRoy Jones to Coyt LeRoy and Anna Lois Jones in Newark, New Jersey, grew up in a middle-class environment. He attended a predominantly black elementary school, but his college-prep high school, from which he graduated with honors in 1951, was mainly white. About 1951, the first of his name changes occurred with the spelling of his middle name from “LeRoy” to “LeRoi.” From 1952 to 1954 he attended Howard University, where he studied with Sterling Brown and Nathan Scott. After he flunked out of school, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force until 1957. These were years of intellectual commitment and poetry writing. In 1957, however, he was dishonorably discharged because of suspicions of communism and such “suspicious activities” as voracious reading, journal-keeping, poetry writing, and subscribing to avant-garde journals.
Free to live the avant-garde life that had become his preference, Baraka moved to New York’s Greenwich Village. Among his associates there were Charles Olson, Frank O’Hara, and Allen Ginsberg. In 1958 he married Hettie Cohn, a Jewish woman also much a part of the Beat scene, and together they edited

LeRoi Jones: "Preface to a Twenty Volume Suicide Note"
Having been raised in a predominantly white city and enrolled in a predominantly white college, I knew, intellectually, about the pain of African-Americans familiar with racial prejudice, but I didn't begin to feel anything about it until I read this poem. The sorrow I came away with has never left me.
(For Kellie Jones, Born 16 May, 1959) Lately, I've become accustomed to the way
The ground opens up and envelops me
Each time I go out to walk the dog.
Or the broad-edged silly music the wind
Makes when I run for a bus...
    Things have come to that.
And now, each night I count the stars,
And each night I get the same number.
And when they will not come out to be counted,
I count the holes they leave. Nobody sings anymore. And then last night, I tiptoed up To my daughter's room and heard her Talking to someone, and when I opened The door, there was no one there... Only she on her knees, peeking into Her own clasped hands. Visit Cain's Self-Exploration Bookstore Back to Cain's Self-Exploration Site
