    Conversations with Erica Jong
    Edited by Charlotte Templin
"Maybe the Muse is a supernatural being. But I think there are forces we have no way of scientifically codifying, and inspiration is one of them."
In Conversations with Erica Jong one of the most popular and controversial of contemporary writers has her say. She was already an established poet when she published Fear of Flying (1973), but the novel's sensational reception came to overshadow all her work. In interviews from 1973 to 2001, Jong relates the extra-ordinary experience she gained as a pioneer of sexual writing from a female point of view. With equal attention to the art of fiction and poetry, she yields her views on the literary scene and on the place of poetry in American society. Among the highlights of the book is Jong's account of the publication of Fear of Flying and its remarkable, best-seller rise. Cast into the role of spokesperson for feminism in the seventies, she has continued to represent her generation of women. In several conversations, she talks about the tensions within feminism over the decades.

She has been awarded the prestigious Bess Hokin Prixe of Poetry (also won by Sylvia Plath), the Borestone Mountain Award for Poetry and many others. In 1981, she published "Witches," a perennial backlist favorite, which tells the story of the witch in prose and poetry. "Megan's Two Houses," her first children's book, a story to help parents and children deal with divorce, is just out from Dove Kids. In 1993, "The Devil at Large: Erica Jong on Henry Miller" (Random House and Grove Press), appeared. It is Jong's memoir of her friendship with the author of the "Tropic of Cancer" and a study of his impact on contemporary literature. Erica Jong's work has been translated into 27 languages and has been awarded the Premio Internationale Sigmund Freud in Italy and the United Nations Award of Excellence. Barnard College named her its Woman of Achievement in 1987. She served as president of the Authors Guild of the U.S. from 1991 to 1993. Writer Erica Jong: A Fearless Voice Page 1 When Fear of Flying appeared on the literary scene in 1973, it ignited a generation. Six subsequent novels and five nonfiction books later, author Erica Jong still inspires women to find their own voices. When John Updike reviewed Fear of Flying , he pointed out that the author was "young and gorgeous." Did you find this focus on your appearance demeaning? It made me feel much better than all the attacks. His appreciation of the book was so extraordinary, and there were so many people who slammed it. Always, there's the new young blonde on the scene the Cinderella. It happens with actresses, and to some degree with writers, if you're young and pretty and you wear miniskirts well. It is also a terrible trap because you can't remain the new blonde forever. Ultimately, that's not what you want to be known for; you want to be known as a writer. What about aging and the way you've changed your attitude toward your appearance?

Address To The ACLU Biennial Conference:
    Free Speech

    by Erica Jong
Author June 22, 1995 - ACLU Biennial Conference New York City
Transcript of Substantive Plenary II Free Speech You know, I want to speak to you today about the creative imagination and censorship and why censorship is such a dire threat to creative people. But first I want to define some terms. I think that one of the reasons that we are embroiled in this tremendous argument about censorship and where we are vis-a-vis censorship, the so-called Communications Decency Act that is being floated in the Congress of the United States, is because we live in a time when we have a very diverse population. And interesting enough, calls for censorship always increase when the population is extremely diverse and different standards prevail. This is almost a given: When you have an elitist or traditional society in which everybody agrees about who gets access to stuff, you don't have calls for censorship. They only occur in a society in which there are many different groups struggling for a place and trying to figure out whose word goes. So it's very interesting. It's almost a product of the diversity of our society that we have these new calls for censorship. And I think, although it seems very depressing some days to open the paper and see so many of the things that we've fought for going down the drain, it's in a way a symbol of how much we have reached people, that there should be a worry about pornography on the internet, too free an expression of ideas and so on. So maybe there is a little bit of hope here.

    10" x 7" x 3"
Collection of Mechtild Maes, Amsterdam Binding in the style of a writing-box. Wood and wood veneers stained to a cherry-mahogany hue, inset leather panel. Below is a view of the back of the binding, showing the brass hinges and the double-hinged spine. The second set of hinges is hidden under the bottom. Upon opening the box a tray is seen, containing writing paper and a fountain pen. The tray closes into the box lid, revealing a rattan lining which is the endpaper of the book. It is a binding, and not a box. The text is integral to the structure, as can be seen in the photos below. The back endpapers are rattan. Below is a view that shows all the parts: There are four different women's names on the stationery: Isadora Wing, Leila Zandberg, Erica Jong and Mechtild Maes. Isadora is a fictitious author created by the actual author, Erica Jong. Leila is a character of Isadora's, who maintains a dialogue with her creator throughout the novel. Mechtild is the collector who commissioned this work. The concept of this binding is that the book is a woman's very private diary, and is hidden from the world, disguised as an anonymous writing box or "cry-box."

Erica Jong, best-selling novelist, poet and essayist, has established a $100,000 fund at Barnardher alma mater to support a program that teaches talented student writers to help other students improve their writing. Known as The Erica Mann Jong'63 Writing Fellows Fund, the gift will pay the stipends of several students each year. In addition, the gift will be used to renovate a space to meet and work with the program's Fellowsnow called The Jong Writing Center. (The Jong Writing Center was dedicated at a reception at Barnard Oct. 1.) Jong, who graduated from Barnard in 1963 as an English major, became an internationally celebrated novelist just 10 years later with the publication of Fear of Flying. At Barnard, she had already collected many literary prizes, most of them for poetry, and was the editor of Barnard's literary magazine. "Barnard was the place where I found my vocation as a writer," Jong said. "I feel privileged to be able to help future Barnard women do the same. As one of my favorite heroines, Fanny Hackabout-Jones, says: `The word can change the world.'"

    http://www.mwf.com.au/arc92jong.html
Today we're talking to Erica Jong, the author of the well known Fear of Flying which was published some twenty years ago now and has sold about twenty million copies, which is an extraordinary feat. In fact, it has just been reissued for - I don't know how many editions it had, but many I would say, and it's available in the bookshop. Erica has also published several novels since then and some poetry and she also publishes essays and has written her new book Fear of Erica interjects:
Six novels, several volumes of poetry, a children's book, a book about witches, a book about Henry Miller. As many books of poetry as novels but given the current publishing climate - which regards poets sort of as lepers - it is sometimes hard to get the poetry books to other parts of the world, but in America there are seven volumes of poetry in print.
Well done. Her latest book is Fear of Fifty: A mid-life autobiography which is a memoir of her life. The book that obviously she came to fame with, in such an explosive fashion, was Fear of Flying.
