Andy Kaufman Revealed!
by Bob Zmuda and Matthew Scott Hansen
C h a p t e r T w o "It wasn't an act it was a happening." Carl Reiner That night as I cozied up to my vodka I watched an array of young, talented unknowns named Jay Leno, Richard Lewis, Elayne Boosler, Joe Piscopo, Richard Belzer and Larry David take the Improv's stage. (Larry would later co-create, write and produce a little show called "Seinfeld.") During breaks between acts, a shaggy-haired young foreigner could be heard from the back of the room begging, then demanding Budd Friedman to let him on the stage. The strange young man with the odd accent soon got the attention of everyone in the packed house as he and Friedman went back and forth about letting him onstage. I didn't know Budd Friedman but I thought he was being overly patient with this sad loser. Finally, near the end of the evening, after numerous noisy discussions between Friedman and the weirdo, the club owner threw up his hands and relented. Taking the microphone, he announced, "Ladies and gentlemen, please put your hands together and welcome a visitor from afar, Mr. Andy Kaufman." I didn't know much about comedy clubs but I did know that going last was an honor and yet this kook with the thick, unplaced accent had begged his way on as the closing act. I figured it was better than a real act because the volleys between Budd Friedman and this guy alone were worth the price of admission. I was also reminded of the law of the street for both a comedian or an aspiring actor: pushiness works. I, along with the rest of the audience sat back and waited for the schnook to bomb.

Method or Madness?
Bob Kaufman's In-Your-Face Political Activism
Forty-seven years ago, when A. Robert Kaufman joined a picket line demanding integration of the old Ford's Theater, protest was easy. "It was the right thing to do," says Kaufman. Back in 1947 when the boycott of Baltimore's premiere theater began, it was house policy to only allow blacks seating in the last rows of the second balcony. "Somebody had to do it, somebody challenged me to do it, and so I went down there and picketed." The same urge prompted Kaufman to march over to Baltimore City Community College in February. There he protested a speech by Nation of Islam minister Khallid Abdul Muhammad, infamous for his recent anti-Semitic and anti-Catholic remarks at Kean College. His convictions also led him to Walbrook High School about a month later, when black Wellesley professor Tony Martin arrived to broadcast his dubious version of the truth about Jews. Although Kaufman calls himself an atheist and has been very critical of the Jewish community in the past, he decided that their demagoguery could not remain unchallenged. Yet the protest business is not what it used to be.

Believe it or not
By JIM SLOTEK Toronto Sun ANDY KAUFMAN REVEALED! Bob Zmuda (Little, Brown and Company) Somewhere, assuming he's really dead, Andy Kaufman was undoubtedly looking down and smiling. There, two weeks ago at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles, was a roomful of movie junket press. And there was his pal and partner in crime Bob Zmuda dressed up as evil lounge lizard Tony Clifton, scuffling with Jim Carrey, who plays Kaufman in the new biofilm Man On The Moon. Reporters' tape recorders were smashed in the melee, and a flushed Carrey was left angrily denying it was a set-up.

    Taxi Andy Kaufman Revealed!
, his writing partner, best friend, and co-conspirator Bob Zmuda describes the real Kaufman as being somewhere unseen working the controls of his body from a bridge deep within his mind. That makes him a particularly tricky subject for a biography, and Zmuda's is one of two timed to coincide with Milos Forman's forthcoming biopic Man On The Moon . As a biographer, Zmuda suffers from a problem of perspective: In some ways he's too close to Kaufman to write about him, and in others too distant. For many moments in Kaufman's life, he simply wasn't there, not being present during his childhood and barred from the set of Taxi and Heartbeeps as too great a distraction to the easily distracted actor. But taken as a personal reminiscence, Andy Kaufman Revealed! proves both enlightening and entertaining. Kaufman lived his act, and while it's true that if anyone got a chance to know the real Kaufman it's Zmuda, it's more important for the sake of the book that he knew the act. The "revealed" of the title is only half there for the sake of a joke: Zmuda explains what went into such creations as Tony Clifton, Kaufman's wrestling career, and other elaborate pranks that played themselves out in public. It's fascinating material, and it goes a long way toward compensating for the fact that Andy Kaufman Revealed!

ChickenBones: A Journal Home Bob Kaufman By Katherine V. Lindberg Poet, prose poet, jazz performance artist, satirist, manifesto writer, and legendary figure in the Beat movement, Bob Kaufman successfully promoted both anonymity and myths of his racial identity and class origins. While romanticized biographies ascribe him with such names as griot, shaman, saint, and prophet of Caribbean, African, Native American, Catholic, and/or Jewish traditions, respectively, Kaufman was most likely the tenth of thirteen children of an African American and part Jewish father and a schoolteacher mother from an old New Orleans African American catholic family. After an orderly childhood that probably included a secondary education, he joined the merchant marine and became active in the radical Seafarer's Union. As editor of Beatitude , a San Francisco literary magazine, Kaufman is credited by some with coming "Beat" and exemplifying its voluntarily desolate lifestyle. He enjoyed an underground existence as a "poets' poet" (in Amiri Baraka's poem "Meditation on Bob Kaufman," Sulfur, Fall 1991) and as a legendary performer in the much memorialized street scenes of San Francisco's North Bend and New York's Greenwich Village during the late 1950s through the late 1970s.

    by Brandon Jubar
July 1, 2002 It has been almost ten months since the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York, and the day on which we celebrate the independence of this great nation gives us cause to pause and reflect. The world has been forever changed by the tragic events of that day, and it is important for us to remember the horror and destruction of those violent acts. Yet we should not use those memories to prolong our pain or maintain our anger. Rather, we should revisit the horror so that we might better understand and empathize with our brothers and sisters in foreign lands where terrorism and warfare are a way of life. We must never take for granted the freedom and security that comes with being an American citizen living in America. We have wealth and resources that dwarf most other nations, and we should use them to help and to heal. If any nation has the ability to go forth and be Christ in the world, it is the United States of America.
