Jackie Kay
Born 1961, in Edinburgh, Scotland.
British poet, playwright, and novelist. Her mother was Scottish and her father was Nigerian. She was adopted by a white couple and brought up in Glasgow. Her adopted parents were communists who took their children on anti-apartheid protests and peace rallies. She studied English at Stirling University. She left Scotland partly because of her feeling that it lacked multi-cultural harmony and she wanted a more accepting environment for her son, Matthew, who was born in 1988. She moved to London and took various jobs including cleaning and hospital portering. She has written for the stage, including for Gay Sweatshop . In 1985 she was commissioned by the Theatre of Black Women to write a half-hour play. After sending the draft to them they asked her to extend it to an hour, which she did. This was read at a public rehearsal under the title The Meeting Place during the Gay Sweatshop Times Ten Festival in 1985. Members of Gay Sweatshop subsequently worked on the play for four weeks to arrive at a more polished version called Chiaroscuro . Jackie Kay took it through many more drafts to reach the final version which was performed by the Theatre of Black Women in 1986 at the Soho Polytechnic in London. Her next play

the past
The girl I was is out at sea.
Isn’t that funny? She just walks
further and further away, slowly.
Soon I’ll think we had different lives
me and her, her and me.
Maybe I’ll wave to her across the sea,
Lift my arm high above my shoulder
and wave to the wee girl with the black curly hair, her skirt, way above her knees in the dark sea. © Jackie Kay

Go to the Listen Again page Listen to the interview Read Jackie's biography CHILDHOOD, STILL The sun is out and so is childhood - remember How the summer droned its song forever Three small girls tumble down the steep hill. Grass skips, gust makes their skirts frill. A wee boy scoots towards the big blue loch. His fishing net bigger then his baw face. It's hot; there's a breeze like a small caught breath. This is it; these are the days that never stop. Childhood ticks, tocks, ticks. Metronome. Speaking clock. Sand glass. Time bomb. A boy kicks a ball through the window, smashes A gaping hole, but this is childhood still Where big things grow small: small as a petal Or a freckle on a face, a speckle On an egg, or as small as a tadpole, Small as the space where the ball missed the goal

interview The Poetryclass Interview
Jackie Kay is the Guest Poet at the Times Educational Supplement for the summer term 2001.

Jean Sprackland, poetryclass Project Manager, asked her some crucial questions about her own writing and her work as a poet in schools.
You write extensively for both children and adults. How do the two differ? I don't think they differ much. I don't like writing for children that is 'writing for children'. If it is any good, then adults will like it too. When I create a voice or a character, I go through the same process whether that voice is a child's or an adult's. When I am writing for children, my own childhood - my past - comes swimming back. I like to keep the conversation open between myself as an adult and myself as a child. When I am creating children's characters, the gap between childhood and adulthood doesn't seem all that large. What do you remember about poetry in school when you were a child? Was school the place where you got excited about it?
