Her (for E.M) I had been told about her.
How she would always, always.
How she would never, never.
I'd watched and listened
but I still fell for her,
how she always, always.
How she never, never. In the small brave night,
her lips, butterfly moments.
I tried to catch her and she laughed
a loud laugh that cracked me in two,
but then I had been told about her, how she would always, always. How she would never, never We two listened to the wind. We two galloped a pace. We two, up and away, away, away. And now she's gone, like she said she would go. But then I had been told about her - how she would always, always. Belief When your mother says 'I don't believe you,' And you know you are lying, what do you do? Do you collapse in tears, own up, admit the truth, or do you hang on, gritted teeth, insist, protest until finally you convince yourself: you are honest, truthful and true

Royal Exchange Theatre
Jackie Kay received a Forward Prize for her first collection The Adoption Papers which was also adapted for radio. Her most recent publication is a first novel, Trumpet . She has published two books of poetry for children ( Two's Company , with Shirley Tourret; The Frog Who Dreamed She Was an Opera Singer , with Sue Williams) and has written widely for stage and television. INTERIM REPORT The residency has been going brilliantly and I have been really enjoying myself. The theatre is a friendly and fascinating place to work, and is providing, in its way, food for my own work What have I been doing? I have been working with a range of people - those who work at the theatre and the general public. For Staff in the theatre Every week I send out a POEM OF THE WEEK on a Monday. It seems a good start for the week - I send them out by email. I also send out a FEEDBACK email asking for people's responses. Sometimes I get some, sometimes I don't. But I do know that people enjoy reading the poems. I also ask people to suggest poems that they have enjoyed. Then there was the anonymous POETRY COMPETITION (prize - good bottle of champagne) for the staff. We got over thirty responses and the winner and runner up were announced in the green room where they read the winning poems.

The protagonist of Jackie Kay's first novel, Trumpet , is dead before the story begins. He is Joss Moody, a black Scottish jazz trumpeter, who has left a wife in deep mourning, and an adopted son, the defiantly ordinary and untalented Colman, in deep shock. For the posthumous medical report has revealed Joss Moody, his tall and handsome father, revered in the jazz world, to be a woman. Joss's widow, Millie, holes up in a Scottish fishing village in a house she and her husband shared, reeling from the press coverage of her marriage and overwhelmed by grief. Colman meanwhile, raging against what he perceives as his father's duplicity and perversion, colludes with tabloid journalist Sophie Stones in a facile and sensationalist rewriting of Moody's history. Trumpet is, in itself, the other side, or sides, of the story it is told in a multitude of voices. There is Millie, whose faintly sepia-toned reminiscences conjure the romance and charisma of Moody; Colman, whose narrative strains with expletives and inarticulate anger; Big Red McCall, his fiercely loyal drummer; the doctor, registrar and funeral director who all literally and figuratively expose Moody; and a host of neighbours and other minor characters, all struggling to balance their memories and perceptions of Moody with the lurid revelations. The skill of the novel is that these disparate voices are given weight and import, and that the reactions of the various characters, although they encompass disgust and prurient curiosity, are never predictable. Even such a minor character as the confused registrar, who in a lesser novel might just be used as a plot-driving mechanism, responds to Millie's feelings as widow with delicacy and deference.

BUSINESS FELLOWSHIP LAUNCHED BY KAY AND MONTE JOHNSON AND THEIR FAMILY
LAWRENCE Former University of Kansas athletic director Monte Johnson and his family have established a new international business fellowship with a $100,000 commitment to the Kansas University Endowment Association, School of Business dean Tom Sarowski announced today. The gift is from Monte Johnson; his wife, Lawrence real estate agent Kay Johnson; their daughter, Jackie Johnson Ferguson; and son, Jeff Johnson. They established the Anthony Redwood Faculty Fellowship and launched a drive to raise gifts for the Anthony Redwood Fund and the KU Center for International Business. Named in honor of business professor Anthony Redwood, former co-director of the center, the fellowship will support overseas study and travel for faculty members pursuing research, course development or an international professional activity. The Johnsons' donation also supports the center's grant-writing efforts. "The School of Business is deeply grateful to Monte, Kay, Jackie and Jeff for their generosity," Sarowski said. "Their gift will provide important support for the school's effort to become a leader in the field of international business now and for many years to come." Monte Johnson said he and his family hope the donation will help globalize and strengthen KU's international business curriculum.

Strawgirl by Jackie Kay Jackie Kay, prolific poet and past winner of the Guardian Fiction Prize, has written a magic-realist novel for younger readers. Magic realism is not the same thing as "magic" or "fantasy". Forget spells, cauldrons, wizards, other worlds and all the paraphernalia you're used to, and think instead of enchantments and transformations appearing as part of ordinary life. There's a long tradition of this sort of story in children's books (Carroll, Nesbit, Norton, Travers) and Kay's novel joins this illustrious line.

There's a long tradition of this sort of story in children's books (Carroll, Nesbit, Norton, Travers) and Kay's novel joins this illustrious line. The heroine of the story is Molly Siobhan MacPherson, known as Maybe, whose Nigerian father is killed in a car crash. The dairy farm he and his wife have tended for years is under threat from the beautifully Dahl-esque Barnes-Gutteridge brothers and their sidekick, Jimmy. The villains are determined to turn the grieving widow and her daughter out of Wishing Well Farm, but Maybe saves the day with help from Strawgirl, a strange creature whose supernatural assistance is immensely useful in thwarting the baddies.

British Literatur Live Jackie Kay - Die Trompeterin Freitag, 29. Juni - The British Council Jackie Kay, geboren in Edinburgh, arbeitete u.a. als Dramatikerin und Fernsehautorin.

Jackie Kay B efore Physics and Chemistry's life altered completely and forever one morning in June, Chemistry added a couple of drops of vinegar to the small pan, then slid Physics's egg in, slowly. Poaching was a talent. Physics hadn't bothered trying to poach an egg for about ten years. Even on school mornings Physics and Chemistry made sure they had a good breakfast. These days the division of domestic tasks in the house was quite simple: Chemistry poached eggs, roasted chicken, made the salad dressing, sent the cards, dusted, chose the new curtains, or the shade of emulsion; Physics made the bed, put the bin out, changed the light bulbs, serviced the cat; wrapped the presents, did the ironing, wired the plugs. Chemistry washed, Physics dried. Neither believed in dishwashers - though, at home, in private, they marvelled at those in their staff room who claimed the dishwasher had saved their marriage.
Physics and Chemistry smiled small scientific smiles in the staff room when the subject of marriage came up. One of the more insensitive teachers, Mrs Fife (home economics, big apron) once famously said to Chemistry:
