The central emphasis of our program is the act of writing , undertaken here in the context of a community of committed practitioners. The program structure privileges the writing workshop itself, recognizing the need for students to spend a majority of their time writing. The structure emphasizes performance and productivity as the student's primary responsibilities: Half the required 72 credit hours accrued in this two-year MFA program are in the writing workshop. Conference and thesis work accounts for another quarter of total credit hours, and the remainder consists of seminars. Program faculty have developed a group of literary craft seminars in fiction and poetry that focus on style, form, and literary tradition. Together, the workshops and craft seminars make for a program that combines a strong and exciting component of literary study with a primary focus on the act of writing poetry and fiction. Students take six graduate workshops (in a single genre) in six consecutive academic quarters of residence.

The winner of the 2nd annual Lloyd Distinguished Fiction Award is Henry Van Dyke whose work first appeared in our pages in 1977. His latest story "Summer Masquerades" will appear in the fall issue. He has, over the course of his career, held a Guggenheim Fellowship, was honored by the American Academy of Arts and Letters and was writer-in-residence at Kent State University. He is the author of three novels, Ladies of the Rachmaninoff Eyes, Blood of Strawberries, and The Dead Piano. The "Lynda Lloyd Distinguished Fiction Award," was established as the result of a generous gift from the Lloyd family. Her short story "Poor Boy" was originally published in the Review in 1981 and selected for inclusion in Prize Stories 1983: The O. Henry Awards.

NEWS RELEASE, 8/27/97
Sept. 4 kick-off of Lunch Poems series features new chancellor plus faculty, staff and students reading their favorite poems
by Robert Sanders Berkeley A lunch-time poetry series directed by former Poet Laureate Robert Hass kicks off its second year at UC Berkeley Sept. 4 with a special guest, the campus's new chancellor, Robert Berdahl, plus faculty, staff and students reading and singing their favorite poems. Women's basketball coach Marianne Stanley, former Clinton economic advisor Laura D'Andrea Tyson, an astronomer and an engineer are among campus figures who will read and discuss their favorite poems. Capping the event is a cappella The event, from 12:10 to 1 p.m. in the Morrison Room of Doe Library, inaugurates the second annual Lunch Poem series, begun last fall by Hass, professor of English. "This series will be a way of celebrating the extraordinary richness of Berkeley's poetic tradition and will provide a forum for the campus where faculty, students, staff and the general public will be able to experience the intellectual and artistic electricity of UC Berkeley," said Hass. Aside from Stanley and Tyson, a professor of economics and business, others reading favorite poems include Ivan Arguelles, poet and librarian; Alexei Filippenko, professor of astronomy; Ronald Gronsky, professor of materials science and mineral engineering; and Pedro Noguera, associate professor in the Graduate School of Education.
