James Patrick Kelly
strange but not a stranger
Welcome to my slice of c-space. I'm a writer. I write stories, novels, poems, essays, reviews, plays, planetarium shows and now ... a web site. Insofar as I'm known at all, it's for my science fiction and fantasy. I've published four novels and more than fifty short stories. In general I enjoy the writing life a lot, but I do have one complaint. Sometimes it seems as though the stuff I write has the shelf life of lettuce! A story appears in a magazine and a month or so later it winds up in a corner of some basement or the landfill. Even books come and go with alarming speed. That's why I wanted a web page: so I can get some of my stuff out of the filing cabinet and back under the eyes of readers. So help yourself to whatever piques your interest and thanks for stopping by. Version 02.24.02 email me!

T he best of James Patrick Kelly's short stories verge on the surreal while remaining firmly based in plausible speculations and extrapolations from the present. Kelly depicts a world where the human quest for difference generates a seemingly endless array of gangs, cults, and subcultures, each struggling to distinguish itself through various forms of body modifications. He shows us a place where divorced fathers create androids to make up for the children they have lost, where the design of drugs has become an art and their marketing a big business. He takes us to a frightening time, just a few years from now, where aging baby boomers cower in their apartments, afraid to leave, because the streets belong to the young, who are enraged to have inherited a world of diminished options and depleted resources. After graduating from the University of Notre Dame, Kelly worked as a proposal writer and P.R. man for a Massachusetts-based architectural firm. Since 1977 he has been a full time science fiction writer. Many science fiction fans first became aware of Kelly's talents when his story, "Solstice," was included in Bruce Sterling's landmark

Your browser does not support script advertise search EUROPE'S MOST VISITED SF/F WEB SITE Strange But Not a Stranger by James Patrick Kelly Pub: Golden Gryphon. 297 page hardcover. Price: $25.95(US). ISBN: 1930846126 Check out website: www.goldengryphon.com A new book by James Patrick Kelly is always a reason to be happy. It has been five years since JPK's 'Think Like a Dinosaur' was released and a disheartening eight years since his latest novel, 'Wildlife', came out. It is quite depressing how some of the best authors in SF seem to be relegated to small press releases at long intervals. Most of JPK's output is in the form of short stories and since single author anthologies are difficult to sell, this dooms him unfairly to the margins of the SF water-hole. At least publishers like Golden Gryphon, founded by the late Jim Turner (1945-1999) in 1997, are willing to step to fill a role larger publishers are barred from filling by market realities. I could go on at great length about why people should buy good single author anthologies but instead I will let this collection serve as an example of what people are missing. This collects works from the 1980s, 1990s and the 2000s with a bias towards later works. Two of the works included appeared as portions of JPK novels. 'The Prisoner of Chillon' appeared in a slightly different version in 'Wildlife' and 'Glass Cloud' was incorporated as the first section of 'Look Into the Sun'. My favourite story in the collection is '10^16 to 1', in which a young boy is given the chance to avert a future and terminal WWIII at a terrible cost to himself and his world. There are other gems as well.

Have you ever checked out The SF Conventional Calendar at the back of this magazine? Compiled by the indefatigable Erwin S. BIO
Jim has had an eclectic writing career. He has written novels, short stories, essays, reviews, poetry, plays and planetarium shows. His novels include PLANET OF WHISPERS, (1984), FREEDOM BEACH with John Kessel (1985), LOOK INTO THE SUN (1989), and WILDLIFE (1994). He has published two short story collections, HEROINES (1990) and THINK LIKE A DINOSAUR AND OTHER STORIES (1997) which is hot off the presses from Golden Gryphon and which would make a wonderful gift for your brother, or maybe your cousin Betty. He has written more than forty stories, which have been translated into eleven languages. He has won the ASIMOV'S SCIENCE FICTION MAGAZINE Readers' Awards four times. On the other hand, he's been nominated for the Nebula a bunch of times, but has never won. On the third hand, his novelette "Think Like A Dinosaur" won the Hugo Award in 1996. He lives in Portsmouth, New Hampshire with his wife Pamela and his teenagers Maura, Jamie and John. Here are some things about Jim that didn't seem to fit anywhere else: He likes to spend as much time as possible underwater (see photo, above.) He survived being both an altar boy and a Boy Scout. He is an avid gardener, skier and roller blader. His favorite TV show is Dr. Katz. He wears a size nine and a half shoe. His personal best in the ten kilometer run is 41:38. His favorite breakfast is French toast. He knew the Patriots were going to lose the Super Bowl last year. Oh, and he loves talking to his readers.

A Strange But Welcome Friend: James Patrick Kelly's Strange But Not a Stranger

I 'm in love. Theodore Sturgeon, John Varley, maybe even R. A. Heinlein when his sexism wasn't showing these are the writers that James Patrick Kelly's stories bring to mind. In "10 to 1" a young boy receives a visitor from the future. As in many such stories, the world needs saving. It's not really a new idea, but one of Kelly's strengths is character. The viewpoint character would be the stereotypical nerdy SF fan of the early '60s, except he is fleshed out with personal touches. We know his nicknames, what happened when he said "albeit" in class, where he lives, and what he thinks about his alcoholic mother and competent but distant dad. (Kelly's characters have depth, and they evoke empathy even when they are not entirely likable. For instance, Phillip Wing, the protagonist of "Glass Cloud" is a self-centered prick. He's not someone I would want to be, but he is a real person.) By the way, I also like the ending of "10 to 1," but I can't tell you why. Read the book.
