barry westphall crashes the singularity by James Patrick Kelly "In the name of the Holy Coffee and the Blessed Shot of Cuervo, amen." Barry Westphall waves the sign of the cross over the steaming cup, then sips. It is his third refill. The bartender of the Armadillo Lodge is too busy washing glasses to pay attention, even though Westphall is his only customer. "So anyway," Westphall says, "the brain is a quantum device." He licks a brown dribble from the corner of his mouth. "Capable of accessing the entire field of space-time by folding the empty dimensions." Westphall has had the headache now for almost eight hours now. "You may be wondering how I know this." It feels like bees stinging his brain. "I haven't a clue." The tequila helps a little. The phone rings in the kitchen; the bartender leaves Westphall to answer it. "Of course, these dimensions aren't easily folded," says Westphall. "Takes an unusual combination of intense physical stimulation and careful neurotransmitter suppression to access a time line." He peers into the mirror behind the bar. "I mean it," says the medbot's

record writing reading features ... contact James Patrick Kelly I met Jim Kelly at ConJose, 2002, and he was absolutely the kindest, most generous man you could imagine. He took a whole group of lost young writers under his wing, introduced them to people (and to each other), took a bunch of us out to dinner, and generally represented the very finest in fandom and the community of speculative fiction writers.
Perhaps my experience explains why Jim Kelly appears to know almost every single other author active in sci-fi on a first name basis. You can't turn over a website without finding someone mentioning Jim Kelly, and always with glowing words.
Kelly graduated from the University of Notre Dame and wrote proposals and did P.R. for an architectural firm. In 1977 he devoted himself full time to science fiction. His breakthrough piece was the short story "Solstice" published in Bruce Sterling's Mirrorshades
One of Kelly's other endeavors, these days, is his column on the web for Asimov's. I have always been a little puzzled by web columns in traditional media because, like, who is going to type in a two-hundred character URL from a magazine? Fortunately, it's a great column, and it is available on the web so that you can click the links.

    • "10^16 to 1" [permanent link] . An unusual title for an unusual time-travel story. A kid discovers what appears to be a time-traveller with a mission. Unlike other kids, this one reads science-fiction and knows just how to help. But should he help the time-traveller in this case for his mission is to change time but will it be for the better? A thoughtful story with no easy resolution to the ending.
Get from Fictionwise Read from Asimov's Science Fiction website "Breakaway, Backdown" [permanent link] . An interesting story told in the form of a conversation but only one side of the conversation is heard. The story tells of a person who very much wants to go and live in space but finally decides not to. The disturbing reason for it will be found at the end of this very one sided but fascinating tale.
Get from Fictionwise Listen to it at Seeing Ear Theatre "Monsters" [permanent link] . An interesting story that starts off looking like a contemporary story about a potential killer who believes a killing monster is inside him. But things take a radical change as the killer suddenly sees a potential savior.
Read from Infinity Plus "Ninety Percent of Everything" [permanent link] . An interesting story (co-authored by James Patrick Kelly John Kessel and Jonathan Lethem that pays homage to the saying that "Ninety percent of everything is rubbish."

There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part; you can't even passively take part, and you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all!

    Wildlife
    by James Patrick Kelly
Wildlife has a wonderful cover, a crisp collage of bright images, including a spaceship, a ravelling DNA double helix, and the Statue of Liberty, all of which are relevant to the story. Unfortunately, the cover is the most likable thing about the book. As the story opens, video journalist Wynne Cage is escaping from a space station where she accompanied a data thief who has just stolen WILDLIFE, a collection of data which may or may not be the key to true artificial intelligence. From this less-than-original start, the novel keeps sinking even deeper into a morass of cliche's about sex, drugs, and AI. The first section of the book is from Wynne's point of view, and covers her escape, her developing love affair with the twisted man who commissioned the raid, and her loathing for herself and her father. The second section takes place several years earlier, and is told from the point of view of her father, Tony Cage, a rich and famous designer of recreational drugs. The third section jumps forward about a hundred years and centers on Wynne's son Peter and his bizarre relationship with Wynne. The fourth and final section centers on Wynne again, except that by this time there are several of her, not all of which are legally alive. The effect of all this skipping around in time is to give an overview of the social and technological changes over a century, although the society viewed is primarily that of the filthy rich. ("My dear Wynne, money only gets filthy if you let the grubs handle it.")

A book review by Evelyn C. Leeper
This volume contains fourteen of Kelly's best stories, including two Hugo nominees and four Nebula nominees (a fifth, "Saint Theresa of the Aliens," is missing). The title story is the best known, and the most discussed, of all of them. Some see it as a response or follow-up to Tom Godwin's "Cold Equations." It can be seen that way, but the "equation" in Godwin's story is a function of the physical universe, while that of "Think Like a Dinosaur" is more artificially created. And in fact it's not a new idea, but has been part and parcel of teleportation discussions for a long time now. Kelly combines it well with an alien sub- plot, though, and makes it interesting from that perspective. The other stories represent the best of Kelley's work, and make it available in a permanent form. %T Think Like a Dinosaur %A James Patrick Kelly %C Collinsville IL %D 1997 %I Golden Gryphon %O hardback, US$22.95 %G ISBN 0-9655901-9-4 %P 275pp NESFA homepage Review Index More Reviews by Evelyn C. http://www.forteanbureau.com/jan2003interview.html
James Patrick Kelly - Jack of Genres by Jeremiah Tolbert Where have you come from, and where are you going? I was born in Mineola, New York and lived in bedroom towns around NYC until I left home for college. I've lived in New Hampshire since 1975 and intend to petition the Secretary of State to make me a native one of these days. I hope to drop dead writing - but not anytime soon. I have this vision of the last thing that anyone ever hears from me is what happens when my forehead hits the keyboard as;dlkfas[dpfqmwertq0tqwt0iqrt5 What was the inspiration for the title of your latest anthology, Strange, But Not a Stranger? I am a big Talking Heads fan. If you are too, then you know. The afterword of your latest collection mentions that you have written several plays based on your short fiction. Could you share with us some of your experiences crossing over from the world of genre writing into theatre? What have you liked and disliked about working in these areas? I like most everything about the theater. I like the collaboration of talented artists across various disciplines and the community that inevitably forms among the cast of a project. I've been personally involved in many of the productions of my work. And yes, I especially like the applause, since writers very rarely get that kind of visceral feedback. I guess the only thing I don't like is how evanescent theater is. I hate watching great performances evaporate. You can reprint a story or a novel, but you can never duplicate a performance. You can only recreate it.

James Patrick Kelly - 1951 Portsmouth By Andy Himes
Londonderry High School in Londonderry New Hampshire I. Biography In a small house in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, 1951, a child was born and given the name James Patrick Kelly. All throughout his childhood he never even gave a second thought to being a writer, especially a science fiction author. "It was like a fireman or Astronaut," he once said, "They were wonderful jobs, just not for me." His favorite hobbies as a child revolved around comic books. Reading them, collecting them, or even writing his own was what occupied many of his days. This sparked an interest in him that would later lead to his writing career. However, it would take a while to let this spark grow. He attended the University of Notre Dame, and graduated without any problem. Afterward, he worked as a proposal writer and P.R. man for a Massachusetts architectural firm. He was in the right business, but not the right area of it. Soon, he would enlist in the writing genre that would change his life. II. Professional Life
