an excellent book discussing British left-wing politics

Little is known about Mr. Kelman, which is a shame, considering that he won the Booker Prize in 1994. So, it is with much enthusiam that I recommend this book. Here, one can get the inside scoop of his political thinking. If you have read his books, it should be no surprise to you that he is a man... Read more The burn

issue 28: January - February 2002 An Interview with James Kelman
by Fabio Vericat
Glasgow-born James Kelman began to write at the age of twenty-two in London while working at the Barbican Centre. He had previously worked in Govan driving buses and had originally undertaken a six-year apprenticeship as a compositor, from which he developed an interest for the way words look on the page. In 1971 Kelman joined a non-selective creative writing evening class directed by Philip Hobsbaum, who later introduced him to Alasdair Gray, Tom Leonard, Liz Lochead and Agnes Owens. Not not while the giro was published in 1983, followed in the next two years by the novels The Busconductor Hines and A Chancer Greyhound for Breakfast won the 1987 Cheltenham Prize, and A Disaffection was awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and shortlisted for the Booker Prize, which he finally received in 1994 for How late it was, how late Em Hene! (We Exist!) in the Kurdistan Report , the Amnesty International journal, Scottish Socialist Voice and the Scottish Trade Union Review . He prefaces his latest novel

For on-line book ordering of UK books Amazon UK carries all titles reviewed in TBR; all US releases carried by Amazon .com unless otherwise noted The Sweetest Dream by Doris Lessing : Flamingo, U.K. 2001 Lessing, who herself was a communist supporter, now speaks out loud and clear about the shortcomings of the old Left. When, for example, news started leaking out about the Stalin purges and other atrocities, the Communist Party dismissed it as propaganda. A perfect example of the Left's blinkered attitude is shown when an Israeli socialist, who had supported peaceful relations with the Soviet Union, gives a talk about his time of imprisonment and torture in Czechoslovakia, where he had been sent on a Peace and Goodwill Mission and subsequently arrested as a "Cosmopolitan Zionist spy for American Imperialism"; he has seen Soviet Russia's ugly side, denounced the party, and wants to bring the truth to communist sympathisers in England. His speech is heard, but quietly ignored. Sylvia, whose hospital in Zimlia gets closed down, returns to England with two black boys who have helped her in her doctoring. Frances, now in her early seventies, and her son Colin and his family - all living in the house - will raise these two black boys as well. "Once a sixties home, always a sixties home," Colin says. And to make the circle complete, Johnny eventually comes to take up residence there too. He is now practically destitute as communism is hardly accepted anywhere. Like many of his old comrades, he simply says when asked, "I used to be a bit of a Red."

The band's first release, the original soundtrack to the movie "Abracadabra" (Indisc - DICD 3830, 1993), was released in Belgium only. With what appeared to be an effective zero-distribution-outside-of-Belgium campaign, this CD was virtually impossible to track down for all of us non-Belgians! Having been involved writing a soundtrack for a short film directed by Harry Cleven, Robbie Kelman was requested to do a punk-style score for Harry's first full feature film "Abracadabra". Robbie hooked up with "the best guitarist from the punk period", Brian James, and the two of them wrote the music for the soundtrack, which was subsequently recorded by the following line-up: Brian James (guitar), Robbie Kelman (vocals), Alan Lee Shaw (bass), and Paul Zahl (drums).

James Kelman:
The Good Times
hen I got off the bus there was this star shining. It was hardly even dark yet there it was shining away. I could make out the five points like how ye drew it as a kid. Seeing it ye knew how the prehistorics picked them out and gave them names. That was the way I felt looking at it right at that very moment, except I wouldnay have known which name to give it.
But it was like this was a special night. The moonlight through the trees. Now the cloud shifting fast. Imagine taking a taxi and missing it all. That was what happened to these people with money, they were too busy rushing here and there. It was them got left behind. They never saw the space, they never got the time. My auld man was right. Money was supposed to buy ye everything but naw it didnay. It was the lack, not having it. The poor inherit the earth. That is what the bible tells ye. Wrong, says my da, it's theirs already.
I breathed the dampness from the leaves and the grass. The smell of the river was in the air. What a night! People took alcohol, got stoned, shot junk into their veins. For what? For more than this? More than what I was experiencing right at that very moment? What would it matter if I didnt see her? What would it matter if I never saw her again in my whole life? Plus if every single friend she ever had, if every one was a lover? What would it matter?
I stopped walking and bowed my head, I was smiling at a certain thought, it always made me smile. I glanced up and for a moment my face was straight but then I chuckled and shook my head. I carried on walking. But it was definitely funny how it happened. How it crept up. Not like a bolt from the blue. That is one thing it wasnt because it was gradual, a really gradual thing; and when it arrived it was all-embracing.
