hen the door opened he said, Hullo, I live two doors along, I was wondering whether I could get the len of a saw for a minute, if ye've got one.
It was a guy answered: A saw?
I lent my own to my brother last week. I only need it for a minute.
Eh aye, okay...
Sammy could hear him rummaging about in the lobby press. Then he was coming back to the door and saying: Ye'll give us it back the day?
Aw aye. Half an hour at the most.
I'm no being cheeky, just it was my fayther's, it's been in the family a good few years. Where is it ye stay again?
Two doors along. McGilvaray.
I dont think I've seen ye.
Sammy nodded.
Ye there long? Aye quite a while, me and the missis... Sammy stuck the last bit in to relax the guy. Alright? he said, putting his hand out. Aye; aye nay bother son. Sammy touched the blade and gripped it, put his right hand onto the handle: wood; a nice feel to it. Back in the house he hung the key-ring on the hook and gave the cutting edge a lick of soap afore starting. He should have tapped the guy for a fag while he was at it. Ye could tell from his voice he was a smoker. Okay; Sammy spat in the palms of his hands and gave them a rub. Fine, right; he prepared a dining chair and laid newspapers underneath it. Then he went eeny meeny miney mo and stuck on a cassette: And then he was off and running: After three four years of marriage, it's the first time you havent made the bed And the reason we're not talking

Then too the ball made wild bounces on the concrete. That and the force of the wind. Ye wouldnay have played there during the winter. When somebody done a crazy kick the wind caught it and it flew for ages. It was a wonder it didnay go stoating right into the water. And cause there was nay give in the ground ye couldnay get yer foot under the ball right and yer heel jarred, ye had to use yer toes. But it still suited the ball-player, ye controlled it first time just, and kept it low. The rest of the guys were sitting about, a few were playing cards. It would be a while afore the restart so we kept walking, ower the auld factory buildings. There was one we had seen the last time and wanted to check out. It had a window on the first floor with its glass out. I went up the rone-pipe and it was easy a lot joints and places for yer feet. In through the window, it was dark and musty. Parts of the ceiling hung down with white powdery sheets and stuff sticking out. A lot of bricks and cardboard and rusty auld nails. It was obvious the place had been gutted so there wasnay gony be nothing lying about. I shouted down to the other two but Perce said he was wanting to explore. I telt them it was gutted and how the Security was supposed to be there guarding it but Perce said sometimes they just stuck up the notices to con ye and Joe says just to try and find a door.

Busted Scotch W. W. Norton ($23) Seven Stories AK Press Audio ($13.98) by Carolyn Kuebler ames Kelman's stories brilliantly render the amorphous, often wordless world of the mind as it putters about, not even thinking so much as just tending to its daily business. On the spoken word CD Seven Stories , he reads: I have to clear my head. I need peace. Peace. Peace. No thoughts. Nothing. Nothing at all. Here I am as expected. The shoulders drooping. They have been strained recently. Arms hanging and the fingers, here, and rubbing my eyes to open them on the same again, here, the same is here again. What else. This character, homeless or simply penniless, also describes his attire, his face in the shop windows, his hunger. Kelman's speaking voicehis Scottish accent, his slow, deliberate enunciationslends the words even greater precision. In a brief note to his editor in Busted Scotch , Kelman writes: I reached the age of twenty-two in the knowledge that certain rights were mine. It was up to me what I did. I had the right to create. I didn't have to write as if I was somebody not myself (e.g. an imagined member of the British upper middle classes). Nor did I have to write about characters striving to become other persons (e.g. imagined members of the British upper middle classes). I could sit down with my pen and paper and start making stories of my own. His characters are frequenters of pubs and bookmakers, they are nightboilermen and warehousemen and the unemployed; they are waiting for the "giro," fretting over debts, grinning at the sun. There is an intense hopefulness in Kelman's work, a tenacious idealism that comes as a surprise amidst so much poverty and day-to-day oppression. And the gritty vernacular is more than a refusal to run a proper spell-check. It is a necessary component of his writing. Tired of the English Literature typecast of Glaswegians (or any working-class regional Brits) as thoughtless, brutal, wife-beaters who speak in fragments and don't know how to spell, Kelman has staked out this territory and given it full range and dimension.

Freedom Highway is a performance driven feature that explores the great struggles of the 20th century through music and song. The commentators who contribute are witnesses to some of the events and music that have shaped the last century. Artists as diverse as Tom Waits, Hugh Masakela, Elvis Costello and Pete Seeger all affirm song as a powerful motivating force in the fight against social injustice. The film also features Ani Di Franco, U2, Willie Nelson, Billy Bragg and Reuben Blades among others. ADMISSION FREE THANKS FOR HUMMINGBIRD PRODUCTIONS, DUBLIN

    Wee Horrors
The backcourt was thick with rubbish as usual. What a mess. I never like thinking about the state it used to get into. As soon as a family flitted out to the new home all the weans dumped . Plus with the demolition work going on you were getting piles of mortar and old brickwork everywhere. A lot of folk thought the worst kind of rubbish was the soft goods, the mattresses and dirty clothing left behind by the ragmen Fleas were the problem. It seemed like every night of the week we were having to root them out once the weans came in. Both breeds we were catching, the big yins and the wee yins, the dark and the rusty brown. The pest -control went round from door to door. Useless. The only answer was keeping the weans inside but ours were too old for that. Having visitors in the house was an ordeal , trying to listen to what they were saying while watching for the first signs of scratching. Then last thing at night, before getting into bed, me and the wife had to make a point of checking through our own stuff. Apart from that there was little to be done about it. We did warn the weans but it was useless. Turn your back and they were off downstairs to play at wee houses, dressing-up in the clothes and bouncing on the mattresses till all you. were left hoping was they would knock the stuffing out the fleas. Some chance. You have to drown

In September 1999 the first new play by James Kelman for five years was ready for production on a profit-share basis by a small Glasgow-based company, the actor Gary Lewis had already committed to it. At the time Kelman was joint holder of the Scottish Writer of the Year award. Edinburgh's Traverse Theatre was the first venue approached. It was Kelman's choice; during past years three of his own plays and one of his translations have been produced there. The Traverse requested that in the first instance Kelman should submit the play for consideration by the "literature committee". He replied to the effect that he didn't do auditions these days. The Traverse insisted so he withdrew the play and wrote to the Scottish Arts Council to express his feelings about the situation.
This is an informal conversation, more than an interview, recorded in late August 2000, which reveals something of what it is to be a writer working in Scotland.

How do people cope with that? Not only the victims and their families but the families of the people murdered. This is the situation faced by who knows how many people. The notoriety of certain miscarriages of justice can lead to an association with the place the event occurred; the Birmingham Six and Guildford Four; the Tottenham Three, the Winchester Three, Cardiff Three, Gloucester Three. In any such miscarriage there is the crucial issue of the identity of the true killers. If wrongfully convicted and imprisoned men finally are cleared and released from prison what chance is there of the real murderers ever being found? Why in many cases are the police, prosecution service and Home Office authorities content to allow the real criminals to walk free? With adequate investigation many of these blatant miscarriages of justice cannot help but reveal additional truths.
This has yet to occur in the case of the M25 Three. Until then, if the three men are not-innocent will any attempt be made to discover the actual killer, whoever is not not-innocent but not not-guilty? It so happens that the three men now released from prison are black and, according to one eye-witness, at least two of the three guilty parties were white.

His voice is that vivid, that evocative. Kelman's gift for rendering Glaswegian dialogue with an audiotaped clarity is a brilliant parlor trick, but his dialect-heavy disciples (including Irvine Welsh and the Cockney John King) overlook his greatest strength. Kelman is a master at portraying the numb headaches afflicting morose, underwhelmed people: nervous laborers ("The Busconductor Hines"), bored schoolteachers ("A Disaffection"), hopeless castoffs (the Booker Prize-winning nightmare "How late it was, how late"). His new story collection, "The Good Times," intimately documents times that are anxious, tedious, pointless anything but good.
