I need your help! This list is more than a little incomplete, so drop me a line ( editor@sfronline.com ) if you know of a book or author who needs to be here. Books on this list are or were published by electronic or small presses and should be science fiction romances in the broad sense, which includes science fiction romance, fantasy romance, shapeshifter romance, etc. Note: They need to contain substantial romantic elements , not just hints or subsidiary sex scenes. When this list gets unwieldy (which is kind of like now), I will break it into smaller categories. Yep, the next time the baby sleeps for more than 20 minutes straight, I'll get right on that. Publishers noted when known, eg Awe-Struck Ebooks (AS), DLSIJ, Domhan, Echelon (Ech), Ellora's Cave (EC), FictionWorks (FW), Hardshell Word Factory (HS), LionHearted (Lh), LTD Books (LTD), Meisha Merlin (MM), New Concepts Publishing (NC), NovelBooks, Inc. Excerpt from
EMBRACING THE SKULL
by
Martine Jardin and Diana Kemp-Jones ROME
December 2008
The weeping city was shrouded in a leaden pall of smoke. Above the cries of the wounded and dying, a tolling bell solemnly lamented man's legacy; now crushed and broken between the dust and rubble that had become the domain of vermin. Scuttling from the shadows, the creatures openly mocked the scourge-ridden populace for whom neither cures nor hope were to be found.
The streets were shattered. Fires raged from gaping asphalt crevasses and the bowels of once proud monuments and buildings. Churning rivers of blood wound through the blighted land, the fallen drifting on its surface like scattered autumn leaves.
Temporary Red Cross camps served as hospitals. Makeshift tents were crowded around flickering bonfires; the flames illuminating the gaunt haunted faces of the homeless. Volunteers tended the wounded, the sick and dying as best they could. Without sufficient medical supplies or hope of adequate treatment, their efforts were almost futile, their main task to comfort the dying. A tangible essence of fear and desperation tainted the air.
As the dirge of the tolling bell faded the frightened voice of a reporter bleated from a static-ridden radio transmission.

REVIEWS Reviewer: Joseph H Pierre from Salem, Oregon
Romance fiction is not my cup of tea, usually. Nor do I favor mixed-racial marriages. The price the offspring of such liaisons must usually pay is, in my experience, far too high.
This is a story with a message: the author is against intolerance, especially racial intolerance, which apparently she has experienced while living in South Africa. Whether she portrays it accurately, I cannot say, not having lived there. I am, however, sure of one thing: love is not an unstoppable force. It is not necessary to follow one's glands wherever they lead, or give into every "passion" that one experiences. There is such a thing as reason, and modern belief to the contrary notwithstanding, it is possible for it to be the directing influence in one's life, while controlling emotion and random glandular messages.
All that said, I have corresponded with this author. She is a good person, who loves to write, especially fiction. If you like fiction, which after all is supposed to be entertaining, why not give this book a try.
Martine has perseverance, and has been writing all her life. (She's a grandmother.) It's time she had a break. Judging from the reviews on Amazon, this book might be the one that gives it to her.

"Top of the 'Net" FEATURED SCIFI AND FANTASY FICTION REVIEWS
Kiyama
by Diana Kemp-Jones

Coming Soon! Genre: Science Fiction The oppressed Omoro, an Alien race resembling Africans but with empathic abilities, was almost extinct due to brutal invaders to their planet centuries earlier. Kiyama chronicles the journey and tests of the neurosynths Kanuwe, Januka, and their brother Malaru, as they hasten in their attempt to fulfill their destiny of repopulating a new virgin planet, the Omori-na, in a ritual known as the " Kiyama " or "Resurrection." Kanuwe discovers herself to be psychically stronger than both of her siblings in her struggles to come to terms with her past and future heritage... Kemp-Jones has done it again by breathing life into new powerful characters, races, and cultures in this poignant and moving story. From the beautiful and moral Omoro to the sadistic and decadent Uhtari, an ugly piglike race, the author creates a wondrous universe filled with hope, depravity, infinite possibilities and deadly dangers. The plot unfolds with the psycho-genetic birth of Kanuwe and heightens with the emprisonment of Januke by Uhtari slave-drivers, one of many tests of their leadership skills. A masterpiece of highly imaginative characters, richly-detailed descriptions plus a multi-faceted storyline

Enchanted
by Kristina Olson
Publisher: XLibris Genre: Short Story Collection (Mystery/Thriller) Ordering Information: Amazon XLibris Do you like psychological thrillers, mysteries, intrigue? If so, this collection of stories will fill the bill. It's all there. So settle back and take a trip into the land where things Hitchcockian reign. This author has a sure touch with suspense and the macabre. Enchanted is a collection of tales linked by a common threadthe unexpected. Each tale has an original slant, some mystery, some thriller with a light touch of horror, some with magic. The characters are believable and have none of the usual stereotyping one finds so often in suspense/thriller tales. The author offers the reader a change of pace with each story. Among her characters are the haunted, taunted, tormented, and evil. Some will draw your sympathy, some will not, but you will find meeting them an interesting experience. I recommend this book as a well done change of pace and an enjoyable read. It offers a wide range of reading experience. I hope to see more from this author in the not too distant future.

Sisters of the Wind

Home Authors Titles Current Picks ... Awards Review by S. Joan Popek Sisters of the Wind was my first experience with a fully interactive book on CD. What fun! Diana's collection of fifteen science fiction stories would have kept me reading even without the music, powerful graphics and QuickTime® movie with the author speaking to me at the end, but the experience was truly remarkable. Her stories each feature a female as the central character and celebrate women without being about women or for only female readers as I have seen in so many other "female heroine" stories. This book is for anyone who likes futuristic, semi-hard science fiction. From the first story, "Black Widow" in which a remarkable young woman teaches her older brother a valuable lesson about tolerance, to the final one, "Swan Song," where we see a woman torn away from her family to fight a deadly, sentient virus by hunting and eliminating the human carriers simply because she is one of the few immune humans left on earth, we are taken on a perilous journey through the galaxy and beyond the future. Diana's characters are believable, and her description is graphic. This author is one to watch in the genre. Her flair for telling a good story and her classic Hitchcockian endings leave us guessing and wanting more. For the science fiction short story addict, this is a "don't miss" book.

December 2000 The Destiny Series launches in 2001 with Book 1, Embracing the Skull Co-authored by Diana Kemp-Jones and Martine Jardin
Blending elements of science fiction and the paranormal, the Destiny series explores the duality of good and evil set against two worlds, Earth and Nirvana. A child of these worlds, Destiny van Kampen, a human/alien hybrid, must lead a besieged Earth from its nadir into a new era. As the chosen one, the quest for salvation and rebirth is not only for the world, but for herself as she must come to terms with a powerful legacy bequeathed to her by ancient guardian spirits. Incorporating the past, present and near future, the series examines issues relevant to modern society and women in stronger, more decisive roles. For more information, contact: Diana Kemp-Jones
