Posted by Maia Gil'Adi on May 16, 19100 at 07:25:12: I am doing an extended essay (research paper) on the view
that Ken Kesey has of women. I am mainly saying that
he is not too fond of them, if anyone has any ideas or
comments I would be more than glad to hear them.
I need the most help possible right now.

Ken Kesey Interview by Mary Jane Fenex and Matthew Rick Matthew Rick: Of the pieces you've done, do you have a particular favorite? Ken Kesey: "Tricker the Squirrel" I think is the best piece I ever wrote. It's intricate and well wrought. The best long piece is Sometimes A Great Notion. I'll never come up with a better book. Mary Jane Fenex: Why? KK: I don't know, but Alberto Salazaar ain't gonna win the New York Marathon. There's a thing you have when you're young. Me and, oh, Norman Mailer have talked about this. About how hard it is in America to get better. Especially at writing. MJF: Do you think it's the influence of American culture that we can only go so far? KK: I saw Jerzy Korzinski just before he died before he committed suicide and talked to him about this. He said in Europe you make one good book, one good movie, and you're set. In America you're expected to best yourself every year and that in itself is crippling. With Sometimes A Great Notion I was able to work 20 or 30 hours at a whack and I had all this stuff in my mind. I've been to too many Dead concerts. There've been smokin' holes where my memory used to be. MR: The things you did with style, with narrative, with splicing stuff...

46. Tarnished Galahad
Tarnished Galahad The Prose and Pranks of ken kesey. by Matthew Rick. ken kesey, ken kesey (ed. by Michael Strelow) (Eugene Northwest Review Books, 1977) p.24.
http://www.ulster.net/~shady/thesis.html
Tarnished Galahad: The Prose and Pranks of Ken Kesey by Matthew Rick Once upon a time a young man of American
background thought he had discovered the Great
Secret, the Skeleton Key to the Cosmos, the Absolute
Answer to the Age Old Question asked by every
Wizard, and Alchemist and Mystic that ever peered
curiously into the Perplexing Heavens, by every
Doctor and Scientist and Explorer that ever wondered
about the Winding Ways of this world, by every
Philosopher and Holyman and Politician that ever
listened for the Mysterious Song beneath the beat of
the Human Heart.... the answer to "What Makes It All Go?"
Contemporary author, psychedelic pioneer or "beatnik in lumberjack country", Ken Kesey is an American writer and cultural figure who defies definition. He sprung onto the literary landscape in 1962 with an instant classic, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, followed it two years later with the towering masterpiece Sometimes A Great Notion , and then abandoned novel writing for 28 years to host a series of zany pranks and intrepid trips, interspersed with shorter written works at irregular intervals. The process of evaluating his life and work is, therefore, at least as erratic and whimsical as the man himself. Born in La Junta, Colorado on September 17, 1935, the youngest of two boys, Ken Elton Kesey moved with his family to Springfield, Oregon in 1946 where he spent many years on a family farm. Reading the Bible and listening to stories on his grandmother's knee, he developed a deep appreciation for homespun yarns and Christian ethics. In high school, and later in undergraduate school, Kesey was a champion wrestler and set state records that he holds to this day. After high school he ran off and eloped with Faye Haxby, his high school sweetheart, and they had three children together, Jed, Zane, and Shannon. Even in the most renegade chapters of Kesey's career, his life is laden with honesty and integrity. The boy voted "most likely to succeed" in his high school class, Ken Kesey became an unlikely candidate for one of the most controversial figures in the psychedelic underground.

Comes Spake the Cuckoo
Ken Kesey: The Far Gone Interview
by Todd Brendan Fahey It was just another Saturday on Ken Kesey's farm, but it felt like Shangri-La. Some shaven-headed freak stood staring down from the rough-hewn stage, glassy-eyed and grinning through a musky amalgam of marijuana and pine, slapping a pair of spoons against his chest and thigha demented rhythm section in an unknown band, one of the dozens to play in the moss-draped south-40 of a man uniformly known as America's First Hippie. While every cop in Eugene stood poised on the roadside overlooking a commercial replacement for the Grateful Dead's aborted late-August doubleheader, the Cuckoo strode around his own eight acres, miles away, in a striped referee's shirt, signing autographs and posing reticently for the camerasan icon who, in the words of Hunter Thompson, "has found out a way to live out there where the real winds blow." As the proud owner of a plane ticket to Portland, before Jerry Garcia's brief collapse in August of 1992 to thirty years of excess, I felt I had but one honorable decision: `Buy the Ticket, Take the Ride.' And so by 9:00 Friday evening, I had flown to Eugene and befriended a local bluegrass band with whom I hitched a ride the next morning to a rustic encampment in nearby Pleasant Hill. By noon, I had videotaped the infamous Bus from every conceivable angle, as it rested in all its brokedown splendor between a pair of Douglas firs. By 4:00, I was bearing witness to tree-people emerging from the hollow

Requires Real Player ( free download) On October 24, 1989, Ken Kesey showed up in New YorkCity in the company of Paul Krassner ( The Realist ) to address a meeting of The Reality Club. "As I've often told Ginsberg," he began, "you can't blame the President for the state of the country, it's always the poets' fault. You can't expect politicians to come up with a vision, they don't have it in them. Poets have to come up with the vision and they have to turn it on so it sparks and catches hold." Ken had recently completed a collaborative writing project with a group of students and he was searching for some words to leave with them to fire their intensity. What did he say? The following is the verbatim transcript from his talk, absent the drama and theatrical excitement of Kesey's bombastic delivery....
[KEN KESEY:]
What's the job of the writer in contemporary America right now? I'm not sure. But here's an example. We started off with what not to do.
