Old Doc Beanes was missing. Well, not exactly missing. Everyone in Georgetown knew where the much-loved doctor was. It’s just that his neighbors and patients couldn’t get to him. He had been captured by the British during the War of 1812 It wasn’t enough that British troops had invaded and captured Washington. It wasn’t enough they had set fire to the Capitol and to the White House . Now His Majesty’s land and sea military were poised to take Baltimore. At least, that’s what they thought. GO TO CHAPTER 2

    FRANCIS SCOTT KEY
    Born in 1779 - Died in 1843
In 1813 the commander of Ft. McHenry asked for a flag so big that "the British have no trouble seeing it from a distance." He asked Mary Young Pickersgill to make the flag for him. Her thirteen year old daughter helped her. She used 400 yards of fine wool. They cut 15 stars that were two feet across. There were
8 red and 7 white stripes. The stripes were each two feet wide. When it was finished it measured 30 by 42 feet and cost $405.90.
During this time Francis Scott Key was a lawyer in Georgetown, just a few miles from Washington D.C. He and his wife Mary had 6 sons and 5 daughters.
In 1814, the British captured Washington and set the Capitol on fire. President James Madison and his wife Dolley had to leave the White House and run to a safer place.
After this attack, the Americans knew that Baltimore would be attacked next. The British had captured Mr. Key's friend. His name was William Beanes and he was a doctor. Key and another man set out to try to save Dr. Beanes' life. They told the British that the doctor had helped to save British soldiers that had been wounded. They agreed to free him, but they wouldn't let them leave because the three men had overheard the British making plans to attack. So they were placed under guard on a British ship.
It was from this ship that Francis Scott Key watched the bombing of Ft. McHenry. There was a lot of smoke and haze, but when daylight came, he could see that the flag was still waving.

    Fitzgerald, Francis Scott Key
Fitzgerald, Francis Scott Key (1896-1940) was a star-spangled Princetonian of the Class of 1917. The poet Robert Browning once wrote that the legend inside his heart was ``Italy.'' With Fitzgerald it would probably have been ``Princeton.'' He entered this earthly paradise in the fall of 1913 from the Catholic Newman School in Hackensack, squeaking past his entrance examinations that September by the narrowest margin, and hurling himself into extracurricular activities with so much enthusiasm that he barely survived his first two years. After three months as a junior, he withdrew because of ill health and poor grades. Following nine months of rustication and recuperation at home in St. Paul, Minnesota, he re-entered as a beginning junior in the fall of 1916. He managed to complete that academic year and one month of his senior year before withdrawing again to enter Officers Training in October 1917. The fact that he was never graduated failed to expunge and indeed probably enhanced his golden memories of Princeton, Cottage Club, Princeton football, the Triangle Club, The Nassau Lit

Francis Scott Key Bridge Fourteen years in the making, the final link in the Baltimore beltway (I-695) was finally finished in 1977. Crossing the Patapsco River from Hawkins Point to Soller Point, the Francis Scott Key Bridge arches over the Baltimore Harbor, reaching the height of a 36-story building. On a clear day you can see as far as Towson. Its name reflects its proximity to where Key watched the bombardment of Ft. McHenry, a view that inspired the Star Spangled Banner. Its steelwork has no expansion joints, making it the 2nd longest continuous truss in the United States. It is maintained by the Maryland Transportation Authority.

KEY, Francis Scott , author, born in Frederick county, Md., 9 Aug., 1780 died in Baltimore, Md., 11 Jan., 1843, was the son of John Ross Key, a Revolutionary officer. He was educated at St. John's college, studied law in the office of his uncle, Philip Barton Key, and began to practice law in Frederick City, Md., but subsequently removed to Washington, where he was district attorney for the District of Columbia. When the British invaded Washington in 1814, Ross and Cockburn with their staff officers made their headquarters in Upper Marlboro, Md., at the residence of a planter, Dr. William Beanes, whom they subsequently seized as a prisoner. Upon hearing of his friend's capture, Key resolved to release him, and was aided by President Madison , who ordered that a vessel that had been used as a cartel should be placed at his service, and that John S. Skinner, agent for the exchange of prisoners, should accompany him. Gen. Ross finally consented to Dr. Beanes's release, but said that the party must be detained during the attack on Baltimore.

    Francis Scott Key
KEY, Francis Scott (1779-1843). A lawyer who wrote verse as a hobby, Francis Scott Key penned the words that became 'The Star-Spangled Banner' after a battle in the War of 1812. The words were sung to the tune of the English drinking song 'To Anacreon in Heaven'.
Francis Scott Key was born on Terra Rubra, his family's estate in western Maryland, on Aug. 1, 1779. Until he was 10 he was educated at home. After attending preparatory school at Annapolis, he entered St. John's College and then prepared for a legal career in the office of Judge Jeremiah Chase. He opened a successful law practice in Georgetown (now part of Washington, D.C.) and served as attorney for the District of Columbia from 1833. He died in Baltimore, Md., on Jan. 11, 1843.
After the burning of Washington by the British in the War of 1812, Key was sent to the British fleet anchored in Chesapeake Bay to secure the release of a friend. He was detained aboard ship overnight on Sept. 13, 1814, during the bombardment of Fort McHenry. When he saw the United States flag still flying over the fortress the next morning, he wrote the words to what was later called 'The Star-Spangled Banner' but was first printed under the title 'Defence of Fort M'Henry'. The song quickly became popular and was adopted by the Army and Navy as the national anthem, but it was not until 1931 that it became officially recognized as such by an act of Congress. (See also National Songs.)
