Francis Scott Key Francis Scott Key was born August 1, 1779 on the family estate, "Terra Rubra," a 1,865 acre plantation located then, in Frederick County, but today in Carroll County, Maryland. Francis was the son of John Ross Key and Ann Phoebe Penn Dagworthy Charlton. His great-grandfather was Philip Key, an Englishman, who came to Maryland in 1726. Francis had one sister, Anne Phoebe Carlton Key, who later married Roger Brooke Taney. In 1789, at the age of ten, Francis was sent to Annapolis to obtain an education. He entered St. John's College, and due to little dormitory space, he lived with his blind grandmother, Ann Ross Key, and his great-aunt and uncle, Dr. and Mrs. Upton Scott. Key's middle name was given to him as a tribute to his great-uncle, Dr. Scott. The Georgian house owned by the Scotts, is on Shipwright Street, and is in pretty much the same condition today as it was in the 1700s. It is said that this is the home of Richard Carvel's grandfather in Winston Churchill's famous Annapolis romance. Dr. Scott originally came to Maryland as the personal physician to Royal Governor Sharpe. Scott fled Maryland for Ireland as a Tory refugee during the American Revolutionary War. Tories were outlawed in Maryland, and many were hanged. Tories were those persons that during the Revolution favored the side of the English.

Der Chronist der "Verlorenen Generation". Fitzgerald, am 24. September in Saint Paul, Minnesota geboren, studierte in Princeton und ging zur Armee, wurde jedoch nicht mehr eingezogen. Nach dem Krieg Journalist in New York, erschien sein erster Roman: "This Side of Paradise".

In 1812, America again was at war against England. The English wanted America to stop trading with the French. But, after war broke out in 1812 over Britian's attempts to regulate American shipping and other activities while Britain was at war with France, all was not calm in Georgetown. The British had entered the Chesapeake Bay on August 19th, 1814, and by the evening of the 24th of August, the British had invaded and captured Washington. They set fire to the Capitol and the White House, the flames visible 40 miles away in Baltimore. President James Madison, his wife Dolly, and his Cabinet had already fled to a safer location. Such was their haste to leave that they had had to rip the Stuart portrait of George Washington from the walls without its frame! A thunderstorm at dawn kept the fires from spreading. The next day more buildings were burned and again a thunderstorm dampened the fires. Having done their work the British troops returned to their ships in and around the Chesapeake Bay. I n the days following the attack on Washington, the American forces prepared for the assault on Baltimore (population 40,000) that they knew would come by both land and sea. Word soon reached Francis Scott Key that the British had carried off an elderly and much loved town physician of Upper Marlboro, Dr. William Beanes, and was being held on the British flagship TONNANT. The townsfolk feared that Dr. Beanes would be hanged. They asked Francis Scott Key for his help, and he agreed, and arranged to have Col. John Skinner, an American agent for prisoner exchange to accompany him.

    The Star-Spangled Banner - A Patriotic Song
by Francis Scott Key (written in 1814) with a 1918 musical score.
This is the national anthem of the United States (by a Act of Congress in 1931). The song is about The Star-Spangled Banner (1795-1818), a version of the United States flag which had only 15 stars and 15 stripes (red and 7 white). The Star-Spangled Banner (1795-1818) is also referred to as the "15 Odd Star Flag." In 1777, John Stafford Smith, an Englishman, wrote the words for the poem "To Anacreon in Heaven." This is the poem that Francis Scott Key "borrowed" for his poem, The Star-Spangled Banner. (Plagiarism was not a big issue back then.) Be sure to see the link to the original 1814 musical score below this musical piece.

O say, can you see, by the dawn's early light.... During the War of 1812, Francis Scott Key was held captive on a British ship as the British attacked Fort McHenry. From the Baltimore Harbor, Key witnessed the rockets' red glare and the bombs bursting in air. This monument depicts Key in a row boat after having been released from the British ship. This event inspired Key to write the poem that would later become our national anthem. The golden figure of a woman holding the flag above the monument is a symbol of America. His father, John Ross Key, an officer in the army in the Revolutionary war, was a descendant from some of the earliest settlers of the province. The son was educated at St. John's College, Annapolis, and, after completing his course, studied law with his uncle, Philip B[arton] Key, at Annapolis, and, in 1801, commenced the practice of the profession at Fredericktown, in his native county. Some years after he removed to Washington [D.C.], where he became District Attorney of the city, and there remained until his death, January 11, 1843. Mr. Key was the author, in addition to the Star-Spangled Banner, of a few other songs and devotional pieces. His poems were written without any view to publication, on some passing topic for his own and the gratification of his friends. They were noted down on odd scraps of apper, backs of letters, &c., a piece of several verses being often on as many separate slips of paper, and were seldom revised by the author."
