  • Jamaica Kincaid was born Elaine Potter Richardson in St John's, Antigua in May 1949. In Antigua she received a British education and was frequently at the top of the class. In early childhood, she was very close to her mother. As the only child, she lived with her mother and stepfather. When she was nine years old her mother gave birth to three sons in quick succession and this altered their relationship for ever. Kincaid says that she was treated badly, that she was neglected.

  • From that point Kincaid felt betrayed by her mother - it seemed to her that her interests were considered less important than those of her brothers. Although she was very intelligent, she was taken out of school when her third brother was born as her father was sick and could no longer support them.

Points For Discussion
Further Reading
In my Foreword , I tried to give a personal statement of what informs my reading and teaching for this module, and I talked about how my appreciation of women's writing was influenced by my mother, the lullabies she sang to me and the stories she told me as I was growing up. So it is appropriate that this novel is about the developing relationship between a daughter and her mother from early childhood to the point of separation at the age of 17. Initially I think you might read this novel as an autobiographical fiction, but remember that this is a crafted fiction, and that the narrative is shaped and controlled by Kincaid. Autobiography is a fascinating form, since any autobiography is selective - it would be impossible for it to be told in "real time". As an autobiographical novel, Annie John serves to highlight the fictionality of the genre, since the eponymous protagonist, Annie, is not necessarily Jamaica Kincaid. While this is a first person narrative, written from Annie's point of view and registering the developments and contradictions in her viewpoint, this is also a narrative that has a wider perspective.

You are taken to a different site, where many of the links are 'under construction'. One area that is useful is the 'History' section. It discusses the importance of Caribbean literature and, although it is not specific to Jamaica Kincaid, it provides a good background. It also has a good 'Postcolonial Theory' section with a large number of essays that explain themes, images, terminology and use of language. The 'Themes and Issues' section of Postcolonial Theory is very useful. Postcolonial Studies at Emory
Good for background on Antigua and Jamaica Kincaid. Not hugely detailed, but has some good links to articles on A Small Place and some of her other works.

"Mr. Potter"
This is perhaps the saddest, but most wise and beautiful book that you will read this year. It is perhaps the saddest, but most wise and beautiful book that you will ever read. It may change your life, if not certainly your heart. However, to acknowledge author Jamaica Kincaid's fatalistic undercurrent, it may do nothing to you at all. Kincaid's personal history is well-known: Born in 1949 into poverty on the Caribbean island of Antigua , at age 17, she emigrated to the U.S. from St. John's, Antigua, to become an au pair in New York. (She has said in interviews that "servant" is the word she prefers.) Energetic, intense, and thoughtful, her servant days were numbered. For several years, she took odd jobs. Some involved writing. In 1978, Kincaid began freelancing for

When Jamaica Kincaid writes, she speaks to you so clearly and beautifully sometimes you have to catch your breath. And there's no wondering if she is speaking to you: there is seldom any doubt. Talk Stories includes 77 short pieces Kincaid wrote for The New Yorker' s "Talk of the Town" column between 1974 and 1983. What we see is the author of At the Bottom of the River, Annie John and others develop her voice and her style. As Kincaid writes in her introduction: It was only afterward, long afterward, that I came to see that writing for the Talk of the Town was a kind of apprenticeship, that I was supposed to do it for just so long and go on to my actual writing. This interview with Kay Bonetti for the University of Missouri's publication the Missouri Review is a useful commentary for those who are interested in researching the mother-daughter dynamics in Jamaica Kincaid's work. Kincaid examines her exploration of the mother-daughter relationship in her novels Annie John (1985) and Lucy (1990) and the parallels that these have to her own relationship with her mother. Kincaid also discusses literary influences on her writing, such as the works of Milton, Keats, and Wordsworth. Emory University Postdoctoral Site

Read the first chapter of "Mr. Potter" by Jamaica Kincaid There’s an easy, lulling pace to the Caribbean. “The sun was in its usual place, up above and in the middle of the sky...” begins Jamaica Kincaid, leading us once again down a path, on her island of Antigua. With tropical ease the journey begins, but soon clouds appear, darkening and complicating her newest family portrait, Mr. Potter. Mr. Potter is the father she never knew, a taxi-driver, a man who cared little for the world, or for his women, a man about whom most of the world cared little. But he matters to Kincaid. And here she wills him back to life, the man who brought her into existence. It’s revenge and catharsis, presence and absence. The Antigua sun is in the middle of the sky, and Kincaid focuses it on Mr. Potter, mercilessly.

Jamaica Kincaid, author of At the Bottom of the River, Lucy, Annie John, My Brother, Mon Frere, My Garden and a variety of other essays and short-stories, speaks with Don Swaim about life, writing and family. She adopted the penname Jamaica Kincaid fearing that the people from her homeland of Antigua would not understand what she was writing. Due to this fear, Kincaid has always considered her writing weak to start, but claims she finds herself and gains strength as the novel progresses. Authors Jamaica Kincaid and Andrea Lee '81 kicked the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute's Black Writers Reading series off to a rousing start Wednesday evening (Feb. 5), bringing a standing-room-only crowd to the Barker Center's Thompson Room. The women, who were contemporaries on The New Yorker staff and who both have daughters entering Harvard's class of 2007, read from their very different styles of fiction. Kincaid, a former visiting professor in Harvard's English and Afro-American Studies Department, was born Elaine Potter Richardson on the Caribbean island of Antigua. She came to New York to work as an au pair as a young woman, then launched her literary career from The New Yorker under editor William Shawn. Her work includes "Annie John," "My Mother," "Lucy," and "A Small Place," a sharp criticism of the impact of colonialism on her native Antigua.

  • Amit S. Rai begins his essay, "’Thus Spake the Subaltern…’: Postcolonial Criticism and the Scene of Desire," with the following question: "If we are sure today that the subaltern cannot speak, can we be as sure that her ghost does not, especially when postcolonial criticism seems to re-present the discourse of that ghost?" (91). In The Autobiography of My Mother , that ghost speaks in multiple voices which blur the lines between fiction, biography, autobiography, and criticism. I adopt Rai’s figure of the ghost here not to detract from the powerful subjectivity of Kincaid’s narrator, Xuela, whom Kincaid calls "more godlike" than her previous protagonists, but to emphasize her ability to transcend traditional literary and political realms. Xuela tells of her life on postcolonial Dominica, and while her story is intensely private, avoiding mention of the island’s political affairs in favor of her thoughts and relationships, it is imbrued with the history of colonialism and slavery. The story also draws on Kincaid’s own life (as does all of her fiction) and that of her grandmother, such that, as Alison Donnell writes in "When Writing the Other is Being True to the Self," "we cannot be certain who the auto-biographer is [of] this text, or if there is more than one, for if this is Kincaid’s mother’s auto/biography, then Kincaid is still present as the ‘ghost’ writer/biographer" (127). The layered voices of the female narrator disrupt familiar patterns of subjectivity and nationhood as well as the autobiographical form.
