W. P. Kinsella
W.P. Kinsella has published 15 books and over 200 short stories, but he is best known for his award-winning novel Shoeless Joe , which was made into the highly praised film Field of Dreams . The New York Times has said that his work "defines a world in which magic and reality combine to make us laugh and think about the perceptions we take for granted." His life, like his fiction, seems to have an element of magic to it.
Kinsella writes primarily about baseball ( The Thrill of the Grass and The Iowa Baseball Confederacy ) and Indians ( The Moccasin Telegraph and The Fencepost Chronicle ), but he is quick to point out that he is neither an Indian nor a baseball player. He grew up in Canada, an only child, in almost total isolation on a farm in Northern Alberta. He did not attend school until fifth grade, studying at home by correspondence. Having no playmates, he created fictional friends and wrote about them from age six on. He worked at a series of jobs-clerk, insurance investigator, restaurateuruntil he eventually went back to school and received a BA. in Creative Writing at age 39. Shortly before his forty-second birthday his first book, Dance Me Outside , was published. At the age of 45, with the publication of Shoeless Joe, its reception of the prestigious Houghton Mifflin Literary Fellowship, and its widespread praise, Kinsella had arrived. As he said, "I beat my head against the walls of North American literature for twenty years to become an overnight sensation." [Adapted from

Canadian author W.P. Kinsella is somewhat of a late bloomer. Born in 1935 on a farm in Northern Alberta, Kinsella didn't receive his B.A. in creative writing until the age of 39. Before that he held a series of odd jobs, including working as a taxi driver, selling insurance, and managing a restaurant. He began writing short fiction at the age of 17 but didn't see public success until the publication of 1979's Dance Me Outside. He became a sensation with 1982's Shoeless Joe, a novel about an Iowa man who digs up his cornfield in order to build a baseball park. The novel, an elaboration of his short story, "Shoeless Joe Jackson Comes to Iowa," won the Houghton Mifflin Literary Fellowship and was made into the incredibly popular film Field of Dreams (1989). Kinsella greatly admired the film, although his other experiences with Hollywood have been less than positive.
Many of Kinsella's works focus on baseball, the game he loves and grew up watching. Other works of his include The Thrill of the Grass (1985), The Iowa Baseball Confederacy (1996), and Magic Time (2001). His other great subject is Native Americans, the focus of his novels The Moccasin Telegraph (1985) and The Fencepost Chronicles (1987). W.P. Kinsella has taught creative writing at the University of Calgary for many years and lives in Canada.

My father said he saw him years later playing in a tenth-rate commercial league in a textile town in California, wearing shoes and an assumed name.
"He´d put on fifty pounds and the spring was gone from his step in the outfield, but he could still hit. No one has ever been able to hit like Shoeless Joe."
Three years ago at dusk on a spring evening, when the sky was a robin´s-egg blue and the wind as soft as a day-old chick, I was sitting on the verandah of my farm house in eastern Iowa when a voice clearly said to me, "If you build it, he will come."
About the Book Ray Kinsella, sitting on the porch of his Iowa farm one evening, hears the voice of a ghostly baseball announcer. It speaks to him the famous line, "If you build It, he will come." Needing no further explanation, Kinsella visualizes the ball field he is being asked to create in the middle of his field of corn. The voice will speak only two more things to Ray: "Ease his pain" and "Go the distance," and yet the dreaming, idealistic man knows just what it is he has to do. Digging up his corn to build a ballpark will inspire the return of baseball legend Shoeless Joe Jackson, a man whose reputation was forever tarnished by the scandalous 1919 World Series. Thus begins Shoeless Joe, the award-winning novel by W.P. Kinsella which also inspired Kevin Costner´s exceedingly popular film, Field of Dreams.

  • Dance Me Outside
  • Dance Me Outside: More Tales from the Ermineskin Reserve Seventeen new tales narrated by Silas Ermineskin vividly recreate the world of the contemporary North American Indian and view the decent and honorable types as well as the drunks and thieves.
  • Further Adventures of Slugger McBatt: Baseball Stories Stories deal with a baseball-loving extraterrestrial, diehard fans, con men, veteran ballplayers, children's teams, and the mystery of a vanished star.
  • Miss Hobbema Pageant
  • Red Wolf Red Wolf This collection of short stories includes "Evangeline's Mother," in which Henry Vold must cope with, and is changed by, his teenaged daughter's sexually precocious friend; and "Elvis Bound," in which the singer disrupts the love life of a ballplayer and his wife.
  • Shoeless Joe W. P. Kinsella plays with both myth and fantasy in his lyrical novel, which was adapted into the enormously popular movie, Field of Dreams. It begins with the magic of a godlike voice in a cornfield, and ends with the magic of a son playing catch with the ghost of his father. In Kinsella's hands, it's all about as simple, and complex, as the object of baseball itself: coming home. Like Ring Lardner and Bernard Malamud before him, Kinsella spins baseball as backdrop and metaphor, and, like his predecessors, uses the game to tell us a little something more about who we are and what we need.

MAGIC TIME by W. P. Kinsella
Voyageur Press, 2001 Mike Houle is a baseball player who, unaccountably choked in his senior year at LSU and is left undrafted by the major leagues. When his agent calls with a chance to play in semi-pro ball in Iowa, Mike agrees although he's never heard of the team or the league. At least, his agent assures him, the major league scouts will have a chance to see him play. What Houle finds in Grand Mound Iowa comes as a complete surprise to him. Families take in ball playersespecially families with young and attractive daughters. Is that normal? And Grand Mound, according to his sponsor, is one of the few towns in Iowa which is actually growing. The entire town shows up for the regular inter-squad matches held by the local semi-pro team and Houle, the pressure off, finds himself playing the best baseball of his life. He may be playing great baseball but he isn't stupid. There's something going on in this town, and with this team, that just doesn't make sense. Author W. P. Kinsella creates an ode to baseball as the solution to the world's problems. In a strange, fairy tale part of Iowa, baseball has become the savior of a town, and the town in turn has become the salvation to a number of players who had somehow lost touch with the love of the game. Kinsella's lyrical writing makes MAGIC TIME an intriguing and compelling read. Although the plot itself is somewhat slow moving (but then, people say the same thing about baseball), Houle's coming of age and his growing realization of the mystery of Grand Mound made me keep turning the pages.

IRVING, John. The World According to Garp
. NY: Dutton (1978). The advance reading copy of the author's fourth novel, and his breakthrough book. The first printing of Garp was reported at 35,000 copies; none of Irving's previous books had sold even 5,000 copies, with one of them having had sales under 2000. Irving switched publishers for this book, and his new publisher decided to promote the novel heavily. After issuing two sets of proofs in small numbers for early readers and reviewers, Dutton printed this advance reading copy for wide distribution to the book trade. It worked in bringing attention to Irving's novel, which became a bestseller and National Book Award finalist. Since then, Irving's books have had six-figure first printings and his reputation as one of the major novelists working in America today has been secure. The publisher's risk, in producing such a large first printing, and their marketing effortsincluding creating this advance copyplayed no small part in this transformation. This is Margaret Drabble's copy and bears her holograph notes inside the rear cover and an instance of underlining: "Why are all the serious jobs done by quacks?" Laid in also are the galleys for her review in

O'Grady Says . . . If you build it, we will come Shoeless Joe Field of Dreams , the silver-screen adaptation of Shoeless Joe Eight Men Out fame. Jim Baker, a researcher for The Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract has this to say: These two men had even more in common than Waterloo and Watergate. First, obviously, is their names, Schalk and Schang. They appear on the same page of the Macmillan Encyclopedia. Second, both were catchers in the American League at the same time. Schalk came up in 1912 and played until 1929; Schang came up in 1913 and lasted until 1931. They finished with 5,306 at bats apiece, which must have taken years of planning. For his part, Wally Schang has the additional distinction of being the last major league ballplayer before Reggie Jackson in 1972 to sport a mustache. As Ray Kinsella asks in Shoeless Joe : "are there ever coincidences?" Chicago Sun-Times was asked what he thought of Thomas Boswell of the Washington Post is Director of Irish Studies at the University of Massachusetts-Boston. O'Grady Says . . .
