Etheridge Knight - (1931-1991) Nashville By Calisha Brooks
Tennessee State University, Tennessee I. Introduction Etheridge Knight's prison poetry, by means of its temporal/spatial references and movements, liberates the minds and spirits of his readers, and of his people as a whole. Knight was one of the most popular poets of the Black Arts Movement, a period during the 1960s of literary and cultural revival for black writers and artists. He began writing poetry when he was an inmate at the Indiana State prison. In many of his poems he expressed a desire for freedom and protested the oppression of blacks and the under privileged in "the bigger prison of society." He strove for a balance between "the poet, the poem, and the people." II. Biography Knight was born in Corinth, Mississippi, and grew up in Mississippi and Paducah, Kentucky with four brothers and two sisters. Quitting school after the eighth grade, Knight did not finish because he wanted to run away from home instead. Later when he was seventeen years old, he joined the army disillusioned and got hooked. Knight served as a medical technical and saw active service in Korea where he received a "psyche, wound." In his book Born a Woman , Knight writes, "I died in Korea from a shrapnel wound, and narcotics resurrected me"(Knight 124). This resurrection led to what Knight called "another death." He was convicted of a 1960 robbery committed in Indianapolis, Indiana to support his drug habit. "I died in 1960 from a prison sentence and poetry brought me back to life" (Knight 180). In prison, Knight says he found a community and it was because of poetry that is what brought him into communion with other people.

On Etheridge Knight's Life and Career Cassie Premo I n the life and work of Etheridge Knight, the theme of prisons imposed from without (slavery, racism, poverty, incarceration) and prisons from within (addiction, repetition of painful patterns) are countered with the theme of freedom. His poems of suffering and survival, trial and tribute, loss and love testify to the fact that we are never completely imprisoned. Knight's poetry expresses our freedom of consciousness and attests to our capacity for connection to others. Poems from Prison in 1968, also the year of his release from prison and his marriage to Sanchez. Poems from Prison attests to the freedom of consciousness that persists in spite of prison. "He Sees Through Stone" portrays a strong, older man in prison whose visionability to think, imagine, and dreamsurvives even behind the stone walls. "The Idea of Ancestry," one of Knight’s most critically acclaimed pieces, is a cry of yearning for the freedom to be with his family and to have one of his own. Black Voices from Prison (1970) is an anthology of writings by men in prison that includes all of Knight’s earlier poems and "A WASP Woman Visits a Black Junkie in Prison." In this poem, two people, initially separated by their differences, find common ground when he asks if she has children. The encounter leaves the man touched and softened by the woman, as are many of Knight's male speakers.

    BIOGRAPHY
Etheridge Knight (1933–1991) Knight was born in Corinth, Mississippi, attended two years of public high school in Kentucky, and served in the U.S. Army from 1948 to 1951. Convicted on a robbery charge and sentenced in 1960 to twenty years in Indiana State Prison, he discovered poetry; his first collection is entitled Poems from Prison (1968). Knight was paroled after eight years. From 1968 to 1971 he was poet-in-residence at several universities. An important African American voice in the 1960s and 1970s, Knight rejected the American and European esthetic tradition, arguing that "the red of this esthetic rose got its color from the blood of black slaves, exterminated Indians, napalmed Vietnamese children." His collection Belly Song and Other Poems was nominated for the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize in 1973. His awards include National Endowment for the Arts and Guggenheim grants, and the 1987 American Book Award for

Students often lack the knowledge of the new black aesthetic, the black oral tradition, and contemporary black poetry, in general. I lecture on major twentieth-century black poets and literary movements. In addition, I provide supplementary research articles, primarily from BALF Black American Literature Forum ) and CLA College Language Association Since Knight has read his poems on various college campuses throughout the country, I use tapes of his poetry readings. I also read his poetry aloud and invite students to do likewise, since his punctuation guides the reader easily through the oral poems. Students, black and white, identify with the intense pain, loneliness, frustration, and deep sense of isolation Knight expresses in his prison poetry. They often compare their own sense of isolation, frustration, and depression as college students with his institutional experience. Students often ask the following questions: 1. Why haven't they been previously exposed to this significant poet and to the new black aesthetic?

Embittered by his lengthy prison sentence, which he felt was unjust and racist in nature, Knight became rebellious, hostile, and belligerent during his first year of incarceration. However, the Autobiography of Malcolm X and other prison works influenced him to turn to writing in order to liberate his soul. As Knight once stated: “I died in Korea from a shrapnel wound and narcotics resurrected me. I died in 1960 from a prison sentence and poetry brought me back to life.”
By drawing from his early experiences as a teller of toasts, Knight developed his verse into a transcribed-oral poetry of considerable power. His earlier poems, “The Idea of Ancestry,” “The Violent Space,” “Hard Rock Returns to Prison from the Hospital for the Criminal Insane,” and “He Sees Through Stone,” were so effective that Broadside publisher-poet Dudley Randall published Knight’s first volume of verse, Poems From Prison
